The Women’s Fund
of Omaha examines
issues and conducts
research to provide
informed support
for initiatives that
improve the lives of
metropolitan area
women and girls.
Jennifer Siebel Newsom, director and producer of the
documentary “Miss Representation,” brings her message of how
small actions can change statistics like these and others noted
in the film to Omaha on Thursday, October 18, as keynote
speaker for the 12th annual Women’s Fund Fall Luncheon.
Newsom’s focus is on how the media’s misrepresentation of
women contributes to their underrepresentation in positions of
power and leadership in business, politics and life.
In conjunction with the film, Newsom launched
MissRepresentation.org, a call-to-action campaign to provide
women and girls with the tools needed to reach their full
potential and to empower them to challenge limiting media
labels.
Honorary co-chairs for the luncheon are Niki Theophilus, senior
vice president - human resources, with ConAgra Foods, and
Sherrye Hutcherson, vice president – essential services, for
Omaha Public Power District. Motivational humorist Juli Burney
is emcee.
Visit www.omahawomensfund.org for more details and to order
tickets for this popular annual event.
“Miss Representation”
Screening
Attend a screening of the documentary “Miss
Representation” on Wednesday, October 10, at 7 p.m. at
UNO’s Strauss Performing Arts Center. The showing will
be followed by a panel discussion. Ticket information is

Nominations Sought
for Recycled Rides
Program
Omaha-area nonprofit agencies are invited to nominate
a female client to receive a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt that
will be awarded at the Women’s Fund of Omaha’s Fall
Luncheon on October 18.
This is the third year for Recycled Rides, a program that
provides a vehicle to make life easier for a local woman and
her family. The car was donated by State Farm Insurance
and is being refurbished by Silver Hammer CARSTAR.
Recycled Rides is an awareness program, sponsored by the
National Auto Body Council, in which body shops repair
and donate used vehicles to families in need.
“The van has been amazing,” said Shawnie Irvin, recipient
of the first Recycled Rides vehicle. “It is the gift that keeps
giving.”
Application letters should include compelling reasons why
the agency’s client deserves to receive the car and how it
would improve her life. Details on application requirements
and the nomination process are available at www.
omahawomensfund.org. Applications are due August 22.

“The Women’s Fund has built an incredible foundation
of focused research that informs the issues facing
women and girls in our community and inspires
innovative solutions for change,” Zych says. “We have
come a long way in just 22 years, but we are not even
close to being done.
Michelle Zych
“My goal is to continue to build upon this foundation
of identifying gaps in service delivery and leadership
opportunities for all of Omaha’s women through
focused research, while advocating for resources and
partnerships that will help level the playing field in our
community,” Zych said.
Zych’s professional and volunteer experience has
focused on the betterment of women and children,
while also emphasizing the role of nonprofits in the
community. She has been involved with the Women’s
Fund for the past year, serving as founding chair of the
Women’s Fund Circles group for young professional
women.
She previously served as regional development director
for Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and director
of strategic development for Camp Fire USA – Midlands
Council (now known as Completely Kids).
She holds a master’s degree in public administration –
nonprofit management from the University of Nebraska

studies and sociology from the University of Nebraska
at Lincoln.

Women’s Fund of Omaha
As the respected voice of our community’s women and
girls for 22 years, the Women’s Fund of Omaha knows
this statement to be true. With generous support from
our partners, the Women’s Fund of Omaha is the catalyst

analyzing trends and identifying the barriers that keep

innovative solutions
that drive change.
While we have made great strides in the

Ellie Archer Retires after 11 Years Leading Women’s Fund
Ellie Archer retired June 1 after 11 years as executive director of the Women’s Fund. Her
focus on improving the standing of Omaha’s women and girls included an emphasis
on women’s leadership, economic self-sufficiency and domestic violence. She was
instrumental in several collaborative initiatives with other nonprofit agencies to promote
change, including Girls in
Real Life and Community
of Women for Change.
Archer came to the
Women’s Fund on what
was intended to be a
temporary assignment,
three months before
9/11.
“
“Because of the contributions of compassionate, dedicated volunteers, incredibly
generous donors, and a hard-working staff, we’ve made substantial progress in improving
the status of Omaha’s women and girls, while building resources to continue positive
change on their behalf,” Archer says.

Because of the contributions of compassionate, dedicated volunteers,
incredibly generous donors, and a hard-working staff, we’ve made
substantial progress in improving the status of Omaha’s women and girls,
while building resources to continue positive change on their behalf.
“The organization had
just moved from the
Omaha Community Foundation into a small office stacked high with boxes of records and
was in the final stages of obtaining its own 501(c)(3)designation,” she recalls.
In the years since, much energy has been devoted to meeting the demands of starting
any small business during difficult times, the myriad of governance issues that come
with growing and sustaining an independent nonprofit, and the challenges related to
successfully carrying out a charitable mission in the community.
A lot has been accomplished in the last decade under Archer’s leadership. During her
tenure, the Women’s Fund:
“The Women’s Fund is now solidly positioned to reach new heights under the competent
leadership of Michelle Zych. I am confident everyone connected with the organization
will show her the same tremendous support and kindness I have enjoyed. I am grateful
from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity and privilege to serve. My years at
the Women’s Fund have resulted in a sense of accomplishment, precious memories and
cherished friendships.”
Ellie Archer is honored at a party celebrating her 11 years as Women’s
Fund executive director and her retirement.

“Circles has given me the opportunity to network with influential women on the
Women’s Fund Board,” says member Shannon Snow. “Through their experiences shared
at our monthly meetings, I have learned several tips for
ensuring that I continue to get opportunities as I grow
professionally. Their advice is invaluable.”
In addition to monthly meetings, activities have included

to learn more about a topic, such as work-life balance.
Four additional Gather events are planned for this year. Circles members also served as
hostesses for the Women’s Fund Ready to Run Rally with female elected officials and
candidates.
“
The inaugural class of the Women’s Fund Circles group has evolved as a strong network

• Awarded $1.1 million in grants for innovative programs, bringing the all-time total to
$1.3 million
• Published 11 research studies
• Held seven Ready to Run workshops and one rally. Nearly two dozen attendees have
been elected to office
• Launched the Talk of the Town networking group for nonprofit agency professionals
• Prepared more than 500 participants for board service with Ready to Serve
• Celebrated 15 years of Today’s Omaha Woman magazine addressing issues such as
prostitution, women in poverty, aging and much more
• Waged a multi-year campaign to educate Omaha’s youth about the STD epidemic and
encourage testing
• Hosted 11 Fall Luncheons, reaching 7,500 business, nonprofit and community leaders
• Tripled the size of the organization’s assets to $6 million

“The Women’s Fund has built an incredible foundation
of focused research that informs the issues facing
women and girls in our community and inspires
innovative solutions for change,” Zych says. “We have
come a long way in just 22 years, but we are not even
close to being done.
Michelle Zych
“My goal is to continue to build upon this foundation
of identifying gaps in service delivery and leadership
opportunities for all of Omaha’s women through
focused research, while advocating for resources and
partnerships that will help level the playing field in our
community,” Zych said.
Zych’s professional and volunteer experience has
focused on the betterment of women and children,
while also emphasizing the role of nonprofits in the
community. She has been involved with the Women’s
Fund for the past year, serving as founding chair of the
Women’s Fund Circles group for young professional
women.
She previously served as regional development director
for Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and director
of strategic development for Camp Fire USA – Midlands
Council (now known as Completely Kids).
She holds a master’s degree in public administration –
nonprofit management from the University of Nebraska
– Omaha and a bachelor of art’s degree in women’s
studies and sociology from the University of Nebraska
at Lincoln.

Women’s Fund of Omaha
As the respected voice of our community’s women and
girls for 22 years, the Women’s Fund of Omaha knows
this statement to be true. With generous support from
our partners, the Women’s Fund of Omaha is the catalyst
working to ensure a bright future for women and girls by
analyzing trends and identifying the barriers that keep
them from reaching their full potential, then investing in
innovative solutions
that drive change.
While we have made great strides in the
areas of domestic violence, economic selfsufficiency and leadership development
over the past two decades, our work is not
yet done.
As the new executive
director, I am grateful
for Ellie Archer’s
commitment to our
community’s women

as her passionate
leadership. Like
so many in our
community, I am
thankful to have been the beneficiary of efforts to
improve the lives of women and girls through research,
advocacy and philanthropy. From the after school
program that kept me safe while my mom was at work,
to my development as a leader within Circles and all
that fell in between and since, I am the product of the
Women’s Fund and I am grateful to join this incredible
team.

Attend a screening of the documentary “Miss
