APUSH (AP US History) Syllabus
Fall 2014
Mrs. Adams – Rm. 269
Texts: The American Pageant (15th AP edition) by David Kennedy and Lizabeth Cohen
Course Purpose
Clear Brook High School’s Advanced Placement U.S. History course is a college-level survey course. This course provides
an opportunity for Clear Brook students to pursue and receive for their high school U.S. History requirements a full year of college
credit. Curriculum, materials and expectations are designed to meet these objectives. The national exam will determine a
candidate’s eligibility to receive college credit.
Course Description
Advanced Placement U.S. history is designed to provide students with the analytical skills and factual knowledge
necessary to deal critically with issues and events in American History, and intermediate and advanced college courses. Students will
learn to analyze and interpret a variety of historical resources and develop the ability to use documentary materials, maps,
pictorials, and graphic evidence of historical events. Students should be able to express themselves with clarity and precision.
Advanced Placement courses are taught and graded at the college level and require a high level of student commitment.
Survey Text
You are responsible for reading and studying the survey text by Kennedy and Cohen. While some of the text will be
discussed in detail, much of it will be covered through independent learning. Chapter quizzes consisting of 10-15 questions based on
the text will be given to encourage students to stay abreast of the reading assignments.
Supplemental Readings
You will be given primary and secondary reading materials within each unit that will deal with a concept that will be
emphasized on the unit writing assignment, or short answer class assignments. These supplemental reading assignments will take
the form of individual reading and response to questions, group assignments, and group discussions.
Review Project Notebooks
During the semester you will receive certain assignments that will comprise the basis for you review project. The purpose
of this project is to create a review for the AP United States Exam. The completed Review Notebook will be due during finals week.
However, students should maintain a separate notebook containing all other materials and notes as it will aid in preparing for
quizzes, unit tests, the midterm and final.

National Exam
The College Board will offer the AP examination on Friday May 08, 2015. Section 1 consists of a 55- minute multiple
choice-section and a 45 minute short-answer section. Part A of the Free-Response Section is a Document Based Question (DBQ),
which requires student to write an essay using their knowledge of American history and ability to analyze a set of 7 documents. Part
B includes 1 (chosen from a pair) essay question that taken together cover the period form European exploration of America to the
present. The written part of the exam counts 60% and the multiple-choice counts 40%.
For all state-approved courses, the State of Texas has developed the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
(TEKS) which define the guidelines under which Clear Creek ISD must develop the objectives for the course.
These TEKS are cross referenced to the CCISD curriculum objectives. In addition, CCISD objectives are also
cross referenced to the State Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) objectives.
The complete TEKS document may be found on the Texas Education Agency (TEA) website at
http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=6148 and is accessible by teachers, parents, and students.
The CCISD curriculum for ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies may be found on the District website at
www.ccisd.net.
