“Ooty struck requests us to publish the following:
ACROSTICAL POEM
At Southwick – June the 25th by invite very kind,
Nice pleasure was afforded us, to cheer both heart and mind
Eagerly guests enter in, and soon the spacious hall
Very quickly teems with friends, including big and small.
Endless chat and how-dye-do’s, comprise the opening scene,
Nigger minstrels then appear and entertain I ween
Introducing comic songs and sudden-got-up jokes,
Now and then an odd grimace, applause so much provokes
Grinning Bones at Tambo squints, likewise at Johnson sage,
A full account of which to tell would take a printer’s page
This done there come a Darkey farce – simple but immense
Handy Andy blundering boy shows truly want of sense
On this being o’er the hall is cleared, tis known why at a glance
Music sweet is then struck up, of course this means a dance.
