The Data: Coverage, Periodicity, and Timeliness
Coverage characteristics
Data are disseminated in millions of US dollars, on the total gross
official foreign reserves of the National Bank of Kazakhstan.
The data comprise gold; foreign exchange (currency, deposits, and
securities); SDRs; and the reserve position in the IMF. The data are
based on accounting records of the National Bank of Kazakhstan. Gold
is valued at book value.
The reserves template data are dissemenated in millions of US dollars,
on international reserves and foreign currency liquidity, according to
the IMF's Operational Guidelines, 1999.
The data do not include the investments abroad of the National Fund of
the Republic of Kazakhstan (Government Petroleum Fund).
Periodicity
Timeliness
Monthly for both official reserves assets and reserve template data
Within 7 days after the end of the reference month for official reserve
assets, and within one month after the end of the reference month for
the reserves template data.
Advance dissemination of
release calendar
An advance release calendar which gives one-quarter-ahead notice of
the precise release dates is disseminated on the Internet of the IMF’s
Data Dissemination Bulletin Board (http://dsbb.imf.org) and on
the NBK's Internet website

The official reserves and the complete reserves template data are
released simultaneously to all interested parties on the NBK's Internet
website (http://www.nationalbank.kz/?docid=208&uid=3F451D9A802C-E8FB-3B4EA6E993244E9B).

The compilation and dissemination of the international reserves data
are governed by the Law on the National Bank of the Republic of
Kazakhstan (No. 2155) adopted on March 30, 1995.
The Law on the NBK requires the publication of data on the balance
sheet of the central bank, which includes the data on official reserves
assets. (Article 8. "Functions, Powers, and Rights of the National Bank
of Kazakhstan," item "p").
The texts of the laws and legislative acts regulating issues pertaining to
the collection of monetary statistics in Kazakh are posted on the NBK
website http://www.nationalbank.kz/cont/publish626681_1720.doc.

No ministerial commentary is attached to the release of the data.
The annual data on official reserves are preliminary when first
released, and become final 60 days after first release. Status of data is
indicated on the NBK's Internet website.
Any major changes in methodology are indicated together with the data
at the time the changes are made.

The official reserves data are compiled according to the methodology
specified in the the fifth edition of the IMF's Balance of Payments
Manual. Methodological notes are disseminated on the NBK web-site,
or from the contact person upon request.
The reserves template data are compiled according to the methodology
specified in the IMF's “International Reserves and foreign currency
liquidity. Guidelines for a data template” (2001).

The NBK' Internet website

publishes the official reserves data in time series format - in USD from
January 2003 - showing the sub items: gold, foreign exchange, SDRs,
and reserve position in the Fund.
The data on total official reserves since December, 1993 also available
on website.
The official reserves data are published in the biweekly press release of
the National Bank (distributed in Kazakh and Russian); monthly in the
Statistical Bulletin of the NBK (in Kazakh, Russian, and English) and
in the Annual Report of the NBK (in Kazakh, Russian, and English).
