Samsung's WiBro gets nod for U.S. broadband mobile network
Samsung's WiBro technology will be used for building a U.S. broadband mobile network, setting a milestone
in Korean telecommunication industry history to export a network infrastructure to the United States.
Samsung Electronics Co. made a strategic alliance with Sprint Nextel, Intel and Motorola to develop and
commercialize the next-generation wireless technology based on Mobile WiMax in New York yesterday.
According to the strategic partnership, Samsung Telecommunications America, Samsung's Dallas-based
affiliate, will supply Mobile WiMax infrastructure to Sprint Nextel. It will also offer Sprint Nextel a total
solution including chipsets, handsets, video/music players and consumer electronics focused on Mobile
WiMax and dual-mode WiMax/CDMA services. Samsung will also seek joint marketing of WiBro.
Sprint Nextel, one of America's leading carriers, plans to commercialize WiBro based on the IEEE 802.16.e2005 technology standard in 2008 with nationwide coverage. Around 100 million people are expected to
enjoy faster speeds, lower cost, more convenience and enhanced multimedia quality, according to Sprint
Nextel.
WiBro, boasting internet speeds of 2-3 mbps while the user is moving at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per
hour, was first launched in Korea in June 2005 by KT Corp. and SK Telecom Co.
Lee Ki-tae, president of Samsung Electronics' telecommunication network business, said, "I believe Sprint
Nextel's decision to deploy mobile WiMax as the 4G network technology will set a milestone in the U.S.
telecommunication industry's history and contribute to further advancements in wireless technology."
Gary Forsee, president and chief executive officer of Sprint Nextel, said, "This announcement is another step
in Sprint Nextel's broadband mobility leadership."
Samsung has so far expanded its WiBro service coverage areas and equipment supplies. The company closed
contracts with Japan's KDDI, Britain's BT, the United States' Sprint Nextel, Brazil's TVA and Italy's TI to
offer WiBro trial services overseas. Venezuela's Omnivision will soon launch commercial WiBro services
with Samsung-manufactured devices.
Market size for the WiBro systems and terminals are expected to reach 1.6 billion won in 2007, 3.8 billion
won in 2008, 6.6 billion won in 2009, and 11.6 billion won in 2010.
Korea's mid and small-sized manufacturers, along with Samsung, are expected to make inroads into the U.S.
market for WiBro-related equipment, devices and content, experts say.
