Principles of American Democracy

Course Description
The major purpose of this course is to analyze our system of government and the historical
background, fundamental concepts, and principles that underlie American democracy. The course
covers the development of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Federalism. It also includes a study of
political parties, voting and voting behavior, and elections at the national, state, and local levels. The
course also covers the role and responsibilities of the three branches of government at the national,
state, and local levels. This course will summarize landmark court decisions in terms of civil rights
and civil liberties and will also study complex contemporary issues that confront national, state and
local governments such as immigration, race, abortion gender, sexual orientation, and disabilities.

Assignments
Assignments will vary. Assignments include, but are not limited to, classwork, warm-ups, homework,
group projects/activities.
Assignments that are not turned in when due will not be accepted. No exceptions.
Academic Honesty
Cheating and plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated and will result in a parent teacher
conference and an automatic zero.

If students are absent for the Midterm or Final, a zero will be recorded.
Missed Work Due to Absence:
Homework can be found on my website @ erhs.la. Make-up work due to an absence is your
responsibility as a student. Quizzes must be completed at 7:30 before school. Make-up assignments
must be turned in by Friday.
Any assignment due on the day you are absent will be due the day you return to school. If you are
involved in extracurricular activities, you are responsible for taking quizzes on the day they are given
and must turn in assignments on the day that they are due.
 Absences may negatively impact your grade.

All assignments are weighted as follows:

Group Activities/Projects/Tests-50%
Final Exam- 30%

89-80%
=B
79-70%
=C
69-60%
=D
59%-0
=F

Regular daily attendance at school is necessary for your academic success. If you’re not in your seat
when the tardy bell rings, signaling the time class is to begin, you will be marked tardy. All of Eagle
Rock’s policies will be followed, which are listed in the student handbook.
