Number of Accidents in Taipei - 1999
Times of the Day
Traffic accident has always been a serious problem in Taiwan, and especially in such
a busy city as Taipei. Many lives are lost during these accidents, and many
families broken, not to mention the huge amount of money spent over crashed cars
or medical treatments. How can we reduce the number of traffic accidents? A
look at the figures of one day’s record in Taipei can tells us that to do so, we can
start from ourselves by keeping ourselves calm and alert on the road in order to
observe the traffic rules.
On this day in 1999 the rate of accident was the highest during 18:00-22:00 of the
evening time, amounting to 45 cases, while the second, third and fourth highest are
respectively late evening (22:00 – 2:00: 40 cases), late afternoon (14:00 -18:00: 35
cases) and 6:00-10:00 in the morning (35 cases). On the other hand, the rate is
relatively lower from 10:00 to 14:00 during the day and the lowest happens during
the little hours in the earning morning (from 2:00 am to 6:00 am), when people are
usually home and sleep.
From the statistics above, we can see that there are three factors for traffic accidents:
people’s state of mind, the street’s crowdedness and visibility. Therefore, accident tend
to happen most frequently during the morning and evening times, when people are
rushing on the road to go to work, to go home or for their social activities. When more
people hurry on the road, when the street’s visibility is worse in the evening, and when
we are less alert because we are busy, accidents are more likely to happen.
Since we are aware of these factors, we can try to avoid them to reduce the rates of
traffic accident. For one thing, we should stay calm and follow the traffic rules even
when we are in a hurry. Only when we stay calm can we, either as drivers or passengers,
avoid driving/walking through the red light or jaywalking to be just a few minutes faster,
while we watch carefully for any signs of dangers on the road. Only when all of us
follow the traffic rules can the traffic flows smoothly no matter how jammed it is, or how
dark the road is.
As the saying goes, safety is the only way home. Even though we cannot always
keep ourselves safe on the road, at least we can try by staying alert and following the
traffic rules.
