Honor Someone
Special with
Parshat Ki Tissa - Shabbat Parah
While Moshe is on the mountain,
getting from God the last of the
instructions for building the Mishkan
(the Tabernacle), the people
become impatient with waiting for
his return and forget about having
come out of Egypt. Although they
have just heard the Revelation
directly from God's mouth, they insist on having something
tangible to see and worship as their savior. Aaron makes for
them a golden calf, and God gets angry. When Moshe goes up
to argue with God to forgive the people, the experience of being
so close to God changes him, and his face begins to shine with
a light that he must cover so that people can look at him.
Professor Richard Elliot Friedman, in his Torah commentary,
points out that most humans in the Torah have a harder time
being good when they are very close to God. Just like Adam and
Chava in the Garden of Eden, it was difficult for B'nei Israel to be
faithful when camped at the foot of Mount Sinai. Moshe,
although he had a hard time at the burning bush, has disciplined
himself to come close and be open to the change it brings.

On Monday morning, donors to our Torah Restoration Project
were invited to attend a very special Tefillah with Schechter 7th
graders to celebrate the return of our first newly-restored Sefer
Torah. During the service, Rabbi Daniel Rosenberg explained
that a Sefer Torah actually lasts longer when used regularly!
"If you leave it in the Ark, the parchment gets brittle and wears
out faster," he said. "However, with time, the letters may crack
and chip and need some maintenance, as was the case with six
of our Sifrei Torahs."

The sofer or scribe went over all 304,805 letters in this Sefer
Torah to make sure each one was not broken and no two were
touching. Once it was completely restored, it could be returned
to Solomon Schechter. "Our Torah scrolls are at the heart of
Jewish life at Solomon Schechter," added Rabbi Rosenberg,
"and we are excited to celebrate the return of this first newlyrestored Torah!"

least two symmetrical floors, an attic, and a basement or crawl

each room in their house should be along with where to place
the rooms in their house. After students completed their rough
drafts, they had to be approved by the building department

During their time in Chicago, the Israelis also got to experience
life as a Schechter student, including the all-school Purim
celebration at Sager -- where they participated in the Purim
Shpiel! They also had the chance to experience how Jewish
teens in the United States celebrate Shabbat and Purim.
"This is the third year that we have coordinated the mifgash,"
said Brooke Mandrea, Senior Associate Overseas Programs for
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. JUF is sponsoring
the mifgash and all of the Israeli participation in the activities. "It
is wonderful to see how welcoming Schechter is to the young
Israelis, and how quickly the bonds formed between the
students."
Schechter students have been reaching out to the Israeli
students for quite some time through Facebook, and some of the
students have already forged friendships. The bonds will deepen
when our eighth graders travel to Israel in May and spend a day
together with the Israeli students exploring the country.
Schechter parent Jacqueline Kott-Wolle, who coordinated the
plans for the host families, said she was excited to lead this
effort. "It is such a positive experience to bring Israelis into your
home," she said. "The friendships that are created are so
meaningful and these bonds give our children a deeper
connection to the state of Israel. It is also fun for our family to
see Chicago through the eyes of these young Israelis and for our
children to practice their Hebrew!"
On Wednesday morning, there was a breakfast with the eighth
grade and the Israeli students filled with laughter and tears. "It
was such a wonderful experience for all of us," said Schechter
teacher Avi Allali, who coordinating the mifgash for Solomon
Schechter and is also coordinating the eighth grade Israel
Experience in May.
A very special thank you to Jackie Wolle for organizing the host
families, and to the following Schechter families for hosting the
Israelis: Brody, Crane, Gerstein, Harris, Hochberg, Hoffman,
Karoll, Nolan, Saxton, Stone, Strauss, Weisskopf, and Wolle.
Thanks also to the Hochbergs for arranging for everyone to
attend the Bulls game and hosting a farewell party.
It's a Bird, It's a Plane...
It's Mat Man!
In Jody Benishay and Hanni Friedman's PreK classroom at our
Early Childhood Center in Skokie, the students have been
learning lessons from the "Handwriting Without Tears" program.
Using wood pieces and a foam mat, the students created "Mat
Man." They learned about their body parts, where they go, and
what they do. After building Mat Man on the rug, the students
then drew Mat Man with crayons on individual clip boards.
"These activities teach the students sequencing skills, how to
draw figuratively by making a recognizable face or person, and
they encourage fine motor development in preparation for
writing," said the teachers. "It was wonderful to see how excited
our students were about this project and watch them
demonstrate their imagination and creativity!"
Sager Second Graders Practice Skills
by Reading to Sager Kindergarten Students
Our Sager kindergarten students recently enjoyed a fantasy
story, The King Who Lost His Ring, read by second graders
Emma Berkowitz and Samantha Wallack. The illustrations from
the story were displayed on a large flip chart. At the conclusion
of the story, Emma and Samantha led a discussion by asking
questions and the kindergarten students shared their ideas and
opinions.
"The story time was a positive experience for all the students,"
said Mrs. Siegel. "The second graders were motivated to
practice reading fluently and with expression. The kindergarten
students were interested in listening to a story read by their
peers. Reading research has shown improvement in reading
fluency and reading comprehension when students read aloud to
peers."
"This was a win-win experience for everyone, and our students
can't wait for the next visit," said Mrs. Gliksberg. "It was aslo a
wonderful treat to hear two of our former kindergarten students
reading with poise and competency!," added Mrs. Fisher. "My
pride in seeing and hearing them read was beyond belief!"

Brett Kopf (SSDS '01)
Brett Kopf (SSDS '01) is one of the co-founders of remind101, a
Silicon Valley start-up company with a unique communication
product for schools -- a safe way for teachers to send text
message to students and to keep in touch with parents.
Brett explained that because he had both ADD and dyslexia, he
had trouble keeping track of assignments, especially in college.
One day he had an "ah-hah moment" when he received a text
message. "Knowing
students text
message and email
so ofte
n I asked myself,
what if a program
could send reminders
to students before
their assignments are
due?" His older
brother David, who
he describes as a
"techie", built a text
messaging system
that allowed Brett to
enter the due date of his assignments and upcoming tests, and
then he would receive texts to remind him about those
deadlines. "The program worked," said Brett, "and that is how
the product and company came to be!"
Brett and David worked on the company together when Brett
was a junior at Michigan State University. A few years ago, they
completely rebuilt everything when they both moved to the
Silicon Valley and started working with venture capitalists to
work on building a stronger product. remind101 is free to both
educators and families. Eventually they may charge schools or
may charge parents for value-added offerings. Right now they
are working to perfect their product and expand their reach.
They already reach over 200,000 parents, teachers, and
students on their secure server.
The product works by allowing individual teachers to sign up
their class using the Android or Iphone App or using the website,
www.remind101.com. They receive a class code and a special
remind101 phone number. Teachers then share the special
remind101 phone number and the class code with their students.
The students text the class code to the remind101 phone
number and then they are set up. Then teachers can send
reminders to study for a test or finish a project.
Even before Brett began working on remind101, his
entrepreneurial spirit led him to operate a separate company
during college. As part of the Bailey's Scholar program at
Michigan State University, he was encouraged to explore any
area of interest, and he chose to learn about social media, which
was just beginning to attract attention from the business world.
After learning everything he could about the subject, he started
Social Bonfire during his sophomore year, and began to consult
businesses on how to use social media. While operating this
business, he learned a lot about the corporate world and how to
build something of value. Brett also learned during this time that
he wanted to be his own boss.
When Brett looks back on his
years at Schechter, what he
treasures most is that his
fellow classmates were really
good people with strong
values. He also remembers
his years on the Schechter
basketball team. He loved
playing competitively.
When he continued on at Niles
West, his claim to fame on their football team was that he
blocked for Rashard Mendenhall, now an NFL player for the
Pittsburgh Steelers. Brett was also was on the track and field
team at Niles West.
Brett's energy is no longer directed towards competitive sports
but is turned towards his business remind101, as he and his
brother work to improve communication between teachers and
their students.
