Method of Instruction and Homework
This is an on-line class. You will be expected to spend several hours a week on your
computer and several hours a week reading, writing assignments, correcting returned
writing assignments and doing research. A typical 3 unit face-to-face course requires two
hours of homework for each hour the class meets, or about nine hours of time each week. (3
hours in class plus 6 hours on homework) This class requires regular, if not daily,
preparation and active involvement.
It is your responsibility to keep up. The only way to improve your writing skills is to write.
You can expect to write regularly. It hurts, but if you want to succeed in the professional
and business world, it will be worth it.

The grading system will be uniformly applied to all students. Grades will be based on
demonstrated proficiency in subject matter determined by multiple measurements for

Academic Honesty and Dishonesty
You are expected to do your own work. Cheating and plagiarism are very serious offenses
and will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is defined as the use of another person’s words,
thoughts or ideas without giving credit to the author. This includes cutting and pasting from
web-sites! Turning in the same paper in two or more classes without the consent of both
instructors is considered cheating. For more information, refer to the University Policy on
Cheating and Plagiarism printed in the course schedule and university catalog.

Cheating and Plagiarism
"Cheating is the actual or attempted practice of fraudulent or deceptive acts for the purpose
of improving one's grade or obtaining course credit; such acts also include assisting another
student to do so. Typically, such acts occur in relation to examinations. However, it is the
intent of this definition that the term 'cheating' not be limited to examination situations only,
but that it include any and all actions by a student that are intended to gain an unearned
academic advantage by fraudulent or deceptive means. Plagiarism is a specific form of
cheating which consists of the misuse of the published and/or unpublished works of others
by misrepresenting the material (i.e., their intellectual property) so used as one's own work."
Penalties for cheating and plagiarism range from a 0 or F on a particular assignment,
through an F for the course, to expulsion from the university. For more information on the
University's policy regarding cheating and plagiarism, refer to the Class Schedule (Legal
Notices on Cheating and Plagiarism) or the University Catalog (Policies and Regulations).
Class Participation
This is a web based class. Go to http://blackboard.csufresno.edu. Assignments will be
posted on the website. Some work will be submitted via the website or by email.

Fresno State has signed up to use the Turnitin.com plagiarism detection software. Using
this software, students in this course are required to submit documents for review. The
software works best as a plagiarism preventer and you can often use this service as a selfcheck before you submit the work for final grading.
IT198W students access Turnitin using IT198W Blackboard course homepage. Check the
Assignments/Tasks section for details on which writing tasks require the use of Turnitin. A
link for submitting the task to Turnitin will be found below the task description. For any
problems, read the IT198W Announcements section or call/email the Digital Campus Help
Desk.
Penalties for cheating and plagiarism range from a Zero or “F” on a particular assignment,
through an “F” for the entire course, to expulsion from the university.
Students with Disabilities
Upon identifying themselves to the instructor and the university, students with disabilities
will receive reasonable accommodation for learning and evaluation. For more information,
contact Services to Students with Disabilities in the University Center Room 5 (278-2811).
Computers
"At California State University, Fresno, computers and communications links to remote
resources are recognized as being integral to the education and research experience. Every
student is required to have his/her own computer or have other personal access to a
workstation (including a modem and a printer) with all the recommended software. The
minimum and recommended standards for the workstations and software, which may vary
by academic major, are updated periodically and are available from Information Technology
Services (http://www.csufresno.edu/ITS/) or the University Bookstore. In the curriculum
and class assignments, students are presumed to have 24-hour access to a computer
workstation and the necessary communication links to the University's information
resources."
Disruptive Classroom Behavior
The classroom, whether physical or virtual, is a special environment in which students and
faculty come together to promote learning and growth. It is essential to this learning
environment that respect for the rights of others seeking to learn, respect for the
professionalism of the instructor, and the general goals of academic freedom are maintained.
Differences of viewpoint or concerns should be expressed in terms supportive of the
learning process, creating an environment in which students and faculty may learn to reason
with clarity and compassion, to share of themselves without losing their identities, and to
develop an understanding of the community in which they live.
