Course Syllabus
Instructor: Mr. Liethen
Course Overview: The goal of this course is to provide students with a basic
knowledge and overview of leadership tools hat they need to be successful in
life. The class will focus on intra and inter personal communication, goal
setting, time management, skill building, prioritizing, work load delegation,
public speaking, and use of parliamentary procedure.
Course Objectives:
1. To provide students with a knowledge of leadership styles and
approaches.
2. To begin to develop an understanding of qualities of good leaders.
3. To observe and critique leaders in the community.
4. To practice the ideas and concepts learned in class.
Materials Needed for Class:
1. Notebook or loose leaf paper
2. Folder or three ring binder
3. Writing utensils
4. Field trip and course fees
5. Textbooks: Developing Leadership and Communication Skills
Course Schedule: This is an extremely tentative schedule. It is subject to
change at anytime due to time constraints or other situations at the discretion
of Mr. Liethen.

Note: Final test is CUMULATIVE. This means that all material covered in
class can be used for the final test.

Course Policies:
1. Late work: Any work turned in past the due date is penalized at a rate of
10% per day.
2. Class Attendance: This will be a high participation class. It is very
important you attend class regularly.
3. Make Up Work: In this class you are treated as the responsible young
adults you are and with that, you are expected to be responsible to see
me for any late work you miss due to being absent. If you miss for an
excused absence, you have the same amount of time to complete your
assignments that you missed. If your absence is unexcused, you will
have the maximum of one day to complete the assignment.
4. Cheating and Plagiarism: All work turned in must be an original of your
own. There is zero tolerance for cheating and plagiarism. If caught, you
will receive a zero on the assignment or test. If I suspect cheating, I
reserve the right to require you to do additional
assignments/assessments, and/or prove your work, or you can take a
zero.
5. Tardy: The door to the classroom will close upon the ringing of the bell.
If you are tardy, you must then report to Mr. Fuller in the office to
acquire a pass to be admitted to class. After three occasions you will
receive a detention and a detention for each subsequent tardy.
6. Behavior Points: All students will start the day with 5 points. If you
participate in class you receive your full points. If I have to talk to you
about behavior you will lose 2 points for the first infraction, the full 5 for
the second infraction, and will be removed from the classroom for the
third. I will not tolerate disruption in my classroom. It is not fair to me
and most importantly it is not fair to your classmates. Everyone has the
equal opportunity to learn and bad behavior takes time away from
students who behave in an adult manner.
7. Food and Drink: Unless provided by the instructor, no food or drink will
be permitted in the classroom. The ONLY exception to this rule is
water in CLEAR bottles. If you bring food or drink into the classroom
you will lose five behavior points and will deposit the food or drink in
the garbage.
Course Expectations and Rules:
1. Bring all needed materials to class.
2. No Food or Drink (except water in clear bottles) will be allowed.
3. Students are expected to act in a safe, professional, and responsible
manner at all times.
4. Respect other students, the teacher, the school, supplies, and
yourself. I will treat you like a responsible adult unless you give me
a reason not to.
5. No profanity or inappropriate slang or language will be allowed.
6. One person has the right to speak at a time. Do not interrupt them.
7. Maintain a positive attitude and open mind at all times.
8. Follow directions the first time they are given.
9. Remain in your seat during class unless the instructor gives
permission to do otherwise.
10. No one is allowed in the agriculture room or shop without a teacher,
principal, or other school official in attendance.
11. NO CELL PHONES OR MP3 PLAYERS ALLOWED. I will confiscate any
phone or player I see and turn it in to the office.
12. The instructor, not the bell, dismisses the students.
Consequences: Disruptive students will not be tolerated in the agriculture
classroom (see Behavior Points above). If a student continuously misbehaves,
they will be asked to report to a conference with their parents or guardians at
the instructor’s convenience to discuss the student’s future in the agriculture
classroom. Remember, students take agriculture classes by choice, if you
don’t want to be there, take a different class.
Mr. Liethen reserves the right to change the syllabus at any time. Students will
be made aware of any changes.
