Progress Report 2008
Giving and Receiving
Lambda Foundation is a federally incorporated, non-profit organization with a unique mission – to build
bridges of understanding across Canadian communities by promoting the achievements and culture of
gay and lesbian people.
To advance public education in equality rights, Lambda partners with universities, colleges, and schools to
establish scholarships, awards and bursaries. Donors, as well as the recipients of these awards, are
publicly recognized as reputable role models, to help advance worthy achievements and the culture of gay
and lesbian people.
Executive Message
In 2007 Lambda initiated a major shift in purpose and focus -- away from
Wilde About Sappho hosted events -- to funding scholarships and awards
for gay and lesbian studies. Partnering with Canadian universities,
colleges, and schools, Lambda established scholarships and awards on
seven university campuses from coast-to-coast and at one high school.
In 2008 Lambda extended its interest in fundraising and philanthropy by
helping to establish the LGBT Giving Network and attending the 2008
LGBT Philanthropy in Canada Conference in Toronto.
Bursary development began as Lambda undertook the initial assessment of
rural, medically-related bursary in memory of Dr. Gary Gibson.

A new logo was adopted by the Foundation and the Lambda website was
revised to incorporate the new logo, the redefined direction for the organization, and to make it easier to
deliver regular content updates.
Thanks to the many donors for creating these opportunities for students while enabling us to partner with
educational institutions and communities, in mutually beneficial ways.
Gary Sealey, President

Partnering With the Legacy Network
Lambda extended its interest in fundraising and philanthropy by helping to establish
the LGBT Giving Network. Executive and other Lambda Foundation leaders and
volunteers networked extensively with organizations at the 2008 LGBT Philanthropy
in Canada Conference in Toronto while contributing a national presence to the
Conference.
Lambda Foundation’s New Look
A new logo was developed for the Foundation and adopted by the
Board in mid-2008. The logo incorporates a tagline:
scholarships – awards – bursaries, identifying the focus of the
organization.
Publishing the Lambda Foundation New Look
The website for Lambda Foundation was revised to incorporate the new
logo, the redefined direction for the organization, and the possibility for
greater ease in delivering regular content updates. The site can be found
at www.lambdafoundation.com.
Using free, open source, content management software, Lambda created
a new website for the public and a virtual Lambda Office for the Lambda
Board and other volunteers.
Bursary Development
Lambda began the initial assessment of a rural, medically-related bursary in
memory of Dr. Gary Gibson.
Dr. Gibson played a key role in Lambda activities on the West Coast, working
with local community leaders to establish awards for high schools students on
Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. Gary was an outstanding family doctor,
prominent in the Canadian Medical Association and in the creative leadership of
teaching new family doctors. He courageously pioneered a Canadian AIDS
medical practice, and contributed in many ways to community and international
understanding.

In addition to federal political campaigning, Gary led the establishment of Club

and safe fun activities for thousands. He studied at University of British
Columbia (B.A.), University of Victoria, University of Western Ontario (M.A.),

he married Barbara. In 1971, he returned to UBC for a year in Business Education,
in which he found his calling. Bill taught high school business courses for 25 years.
Helping educate and guide young people is incredibly satisfying to Bill and he is
especially proud of a work experience programme he developed for at-risk
teenagers resulting in countless students finding suitable careers and gaining selfesteem.
Bill's met his partner Edward Poole in 1986 and between them, they have four
children and nine grandchildren. They live on Salt Spring Island where they operate a bed and breakfast,
'Birdsong'. Bill is a busy substitute teacher at Gulf Islands Secondary School (GISS) and is very active in
the gay community. He is a past president, and current secretary, of GLOSSI (Gays and Lesbians of Salt
Spring Island) as well as sponsor of the Gay Straight Alliance of GISS.
