Encouraging National Student Interaction in Photonics
November 10, 2003, OTTAWA
The Student Network of the Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations (CIPI) is proud
to announce that “Back to Basics: A Workshop on Experimental Techniques in
Photonics” will be held from November 10th to 13th, 2003 in Ottawa, Ontario.
This workshop will cover a variety of topics including:
- PRO Laser Safety Course
- OPRA Workshop 11 – Photonic Devices: Design to Delivery
- Photonic design demonstrations and hands-on work
- Photonic experimental techniques.
The workshop will bring together two separate national/international student research
organisations for the first time (CIPI-S and MANCEF). While photonics is multidisciplinary by nature, MANCEF's micro/nano machining focus will bring in a
transdisciplinary element.
This is a student-organized workshop. One we've taken on our own initiative to hold. It is
a distributed workshop in which students will learn about photonic design practices over
three days at three institutes. This is unique in that normal workshops feature
presentations and poster sessions at one location. This is a "hands-on" workshop where
students will learn practical aspects of photonic design.
It's being held in Ottawa, a centre of excellence in Canada for photonics research and
product development.
The workshop is being held concurrently with an OPRA workshop and in conjunction
with BioLIGHT 2003 and BioNorth 2003.
