Course contents:
 Waveguide theory: Mode, loss, dispersion, bandwidth.
 Mode-coupling theory.
 Passive Guided-wave photonic devices: Electro-optic modulator, directional
coupler, Bragg gratings, optical filter, DWDM technology
 Active guide-wave photonic devices: Optical Amplifiers, noise figure, gain
profile, ASE noise. Gain equalization, bit error rate, amplifier cascade.
Grading Policy:
 Two in class Exams: 60%
 Final: 40%
Course Policy:
 Cheating will not be tolerated!
 You must attend all exams. Failure to attend will result in a grade of “F”. If
you have a “valid” reason for not coming to an exam, you must let the
instructor know in advance!
 Make sure to check the class website for updates!
 Homework will be handed out in class, and will not be graded. It is the
student’s responsibility to check the homework solutions posted on the class
website and understand the solutions.
