Data indicate that 22% of group health
insurance costs are stress related and in the
neighborhood of $308 billion dollars annually.1
Stress is the most costly lifestyle factor in
corporate America and was found to generate
more than $35 million in medical costs at Union
Pacific Railroad based in Omaha, Nebraska.2
The U.S. Bureau of Labor says that stress costs
U.S. businesses $300 billion annually in lost
productivity, absenteeism, accidents, employee
turnover, and medical, legal and insurance fees,
and workers’ compensation awards. 3
Business complexities demand good
measurement tools with results directly linked
to business financial and workforce
performance. In partnership with Stress
Directions, Inc.® (SDI), CIGNA Behavioral
Health (CBH) offers the stressAUDIT®
diagnostic consulting engagement that
identifies and measures drivers of financial
and workforce performance vulnerabilities,
and puts a price tag on them.
Why consider a stressAudit
Diagnostic?
Companies invest significant dollars in its
human capital. Human beings are both
positively and negatively impacted by the
demands and pressures brought about from the
normal operating realities of working in a
changing business environment and the added
impact of personal life. Numerous initiatives
circulate through organizations with multiple
components that touch on the business impact of
pressures and demands, but none systematically
measure the drivers of financial and workforce
cost exposures and performance while bringing
employees immediate benefit for improving their
health and performance in the process.
The stressAUDIT® utilizes company financials
and calculates specific costs for the stress related
root cause items associated with seven key
indicator areas--health benefit utilization,
workers’ compensation, short- and long-term
disability, turnover, absenteeism, presenteeism
and organizational asynchrony. Research shows
that between 22% and 50% of costs associated
with these indicator scales are attributable to
stress4.
Actionable root cause items in each of these
indicator scales are identified as part of the
stressAUDIT engagement through the
organizationalSTRESS PROFILE™ (OSP)--an
MRI for the company that targets the “hot spots”
in the company and speaks to specific cost
exposures and performance vulnerabilities
related to stress. These results provide executives
with a clear business case for targeted cost
recovery and productivity improvement.
How are the data gathered?
These powerful organizational reports are
generated by data gathered by the Personal Stress
Navigator® (PSN) and company specific cost
data are gathered by CIGNA Behavioral Health’s
partner, SDI. The PSN is a comprehensive online

tool designed to give individuals a real-time environment where they can systematically evaluate
and organize their thinking on their stress susceptibilities, sources, and symptoms in order to chart
a course of effective action and positive behavioral change. The PSN is customized with company
demographics and rapidly implemented over a few weeks. The PSN asks individuals to take 20-30
minutes to respond to any of the 264 items relevant to them.
Our experts in human capital cost data compilation gather the remaining information necessary for
this diagnostic engagement from each client. The collective group data gathered from the PSN and
the company specific cost data gathered by our experts are combined to develop the final
stressAUDIT report.
What does the company and its employees receive?
The employees receive a private online assessment using the Personal Stress Navigator that
instantly generates the confidential PSN Employee Interpretive Report based on their unique
responses. This report provides direct information on their susceptibility to, and sources and
symptoms of stress. The targeted information in the report enables employees to take personal
responsibility for their own health and performance.
The company receives the confidential stressAUDIT® Report that quantifies the collective effects
of performance demands and pressures on the employee population and identifies the root cause
drivers within the seven key business indicators contributing to performance vulnerabilities. A
confidential analysis outlining the exact percentage of costs attributable to the root cause drivers in
the key indicator areas for the organization is included. The report provides a data driven basis for
targeted cost saving solutions. Recommendations for those solutions are developed in conjunction
with the company executive team into a corporate action plan. The corporate action plan is based
on financial and strategy goals using the remaining consulting hours to most effectively include
focus groups, executive strategy planning sessions, and other productivity-focused
implementations.
What is the possible ROI?
Imagine what a full diagnosis of the financial implications of cost exposures and performance
vulnerabilities can do for your bottom line. Do you really know where all the hot spots are or do
you only know the ones that are already costing the company?
Here is what an organizationalSTRESS PROFILE alone can do. BellSouth documented a 36%
decrease that equated to a savings of $13 million in health benefits utilization in one year
following an intensive stress analysis based on these assessment tools. Gillette was able to meet
the rollout deadline for the Mach III razor as a result of an SDI consultation based on assessment
tool data. Costa Mesa Hospital was able to decrease employee turnover by 40%. North Shore
Medical Imaging Center met its aggressive 200% annual growth goals and reduced workforce
total stress symptoms by 38% in one year. With results similar to these, the stressAUDIT®
engagement provides the CEO a quantifiable cost analysis of burning platform issues within
the organization. This additional data provided through the stressAUDIT® engagement
allows executives to directly measure and take strategic approaches in bringing sustainable
and significant returns across the entire organization from a single diagnostic engagement.
