Recycling Systems of Environmental Resources
Winter semester
Description and rationale: This course outlines the fundamental theory and practice of waste management
system and recycling system for environmental resources. Especially, I shall instruct the basic concept and
process for the evaluation of recycling technology and the design of recycling systems for solid waste to promote
a recycling-oriented society, in Japan.
Pre-requisite: infrastructure planning, systems engineering
Expected students: master and doctoral

Course outline:
(1) Introduction for waste recycling
Background of promoting a recycling-oriented society, Outlines of laws related recycling,
Relationships between proper treatment and disposal of waste and recycling, Outlines of recycling,
etc.
(2) Specific recycling technology and systems in Japan
2.1 Wasted paper
2.2 Wasted bottles
2.3 Wasted cans
2.4 Wasted PET bottles
2.5 Wasted plastics
2.6 Wasted home electric appliances
2.7 Organic waste
2.8 Construction waste
(3) Special lecture (If possible)
3.1 Field trip to recycling facilities in Sapporo
3.2 Lecture by the specialist
Grading: Based on number of attendances and results of reports given during the course and final examination.
