EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
DIESEL ENGINE/HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
Full-time position for an experienced diesel and heavy equipment mechanic responsible
for maintaining a fleet of trucks and construction equipment. Work on diesel and
gasoline engines to repair or replace engines, transmissions, drive trains, hydraulics, and
all related systems.
Must have formal training in diesel engines and heavy equipment and a CDL. Vocational
Diploma in Heavy Equipment Mechanics is desired and three (3) years of related work
experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. ASE Certification
desired.
Candidates will be required to perform a physical agility test, consisting of lifting 50-100
pounds of weight and climbing up on a tandem dump truck or loader to troubleshoot a
problem. Candidates will also be required to perform a mechanical aptitude test
consisting of mounting a tire and wheel on a tandem dump truck, minor welding, and
troubleshooting a minor electrical problem and a hydraulic problem on a tandem dump
truck. The City will have coveralls available for candidates during the tests.
This is a second-shift position, with normal hours of 2:00 to 10:00 p.m. The position
offers a starting wage of $23.63, plus shift premium. Benefits include pension, health

Purpose of Position
This is a skilled position in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks,
and heavy equipment. Work is performed in accordance with accepted trade
practices, maintenance manuals, and established policies and procedures. There
is some latitude for the use of independent judgment in the diagnosis and
evaluation of problems and method of repair.
Direct supervision is received from the Lead Mechanic. Work originates as the
result of the continuing need for maintaining and repairing vehicles and heavy
equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be
construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required
and assigned.
Perform preventive maintenance on vehicles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other
mechanical equipment.
Operate a variety of diagnostic instruments to test and service vehicles and
equipment and use a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools in the
servicing and repair of equipment.
Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary parts.
Repair and/or replace brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission,
ignition, air, exhaust, axle assembly, and related systems on vehicles, heavy
equipment, and other various gasoline and diesel equipment.
Change and repair tires and tubes.
Provide emergency field assistance to disabled vehicles and equipment to include
operating a tow vehicle.

Additional Tasks and Responsibilities
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they

Maintain records, prepare reports and other records of maintenance functions.
Assist in preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and heavy equipment.
Make repairs to City buildings.
Clean shop floors, tools, and work areas.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job
Functions
Valid Wisconsin Driver's license with CDL endorsement.
Graduation from high school plus specialized post high school technical training
in diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulics, electronics and cooling
systems.
Three (3) years’ related experience in repair and maintenance of gasoline and
diesel engines and heavy equipment.
ASE certification desired.
Vocational Diploma in heavy equipment mechanics desired.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job
Functions
Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics. Considerable knowledge of gas
and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, generators, and welding. Working
knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal
maintenance and repair activities. Working knowledge of the practices,
methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance. Skill in
operation of listed tools and equipment: Motorized vehicles for mechanical
testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and
mechanical system work; mechanic’s tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air
tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of
motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; calculator; phone;
mobile or portable radio.
Employees in this position are required to have their own set of basic mechanic
hand tools.
Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication
Ability to communicate with supervisor, co-workers and general public verbally
and in writing.
Mathematical Ability
Ability to use calculator.
Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability
Ability to exercise the judgement and decisiveness required in situations
involving automotive mechanics. Ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships.
Physical Requirements
Requires occasional bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, crawling and kneeling. Occasional
climbing, reaching above shoulder level, pushing and pulling. Requires use of hands and fingers
to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. Requires repetitive foot movement, simple
and firm grasping, and fine manipulation of both hands.
Requires frequent lifting or moving up to 25 pounds. Requires occasional lifting of up to 100
pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to
adjust focus.
Environmental Adaptability
Requires work over moving parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles,
vibration, and outdoor weather conditions over 2/3 of the working time.
Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
Requires work in high, precarious places, some exposure to adverse weather
conditions, toxins or caustic chemicals.
Protective equipment required for this position includes gloves, hard hat, hearing
protection, welding goggles, safety shoes, safety harness and a safety vest.
