CLASS TITLE: HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of a District Road Superintendent, perform skilled work in the repair,
maintenance, overhaul and rebuilding of a wide variety of heavy diesel and gasoline
vehicles and construction equipment.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Repair, overhaul, tune and adjust a variety of diesel and gas engines, transmissions,
pumps and valves of heavy vehicles and power-driven and mechanical equipment.
Inspect assigned equipment; diagnose electrical, mechanical and hydraulic problems and
determine the extent of repairs.
Test and repair components and equipment such as alternators, distributors, relays,
lights, switches and fuel injection systems.
Realign and adjust hydraulic and air brakes; repair electrical, heating and air conditioning
systems.
Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and diagnostic equipment.
Perform safety inspections of vehicles and equipment; identify safety hazards and make
necessary repairs and adjustments to assure safe operation of vehicles and equipment.
Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment such as presses, welding
equipment, cutting torch, sandblaster, hydraulic jack, test equipment, fork lift, back-hoe,
vice, air compressor, portable generator and water pump, steam cleaner, chain hoist, part
washer, paint gun, chain saw, and precision measuring devices.
Order needed parts and supplies; maintain related records.
Provide work direction and guidance to assigned workers and others; assure that work is
performed consistent with established standards.
Travel to various sites as necessary to conduct work; set up service truck for field repairs;
maintain service truck and equipment in proper working order.
Perform metal fabrications, gas and electric welding, painting and body work as needed.
Perform preventive maintenance duties as needed; maintain work area for cleanliness
and safety.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Methods, equipment and materials used in the overhaul, repair and maintenance of
heavy diesel and gas equipment and vehicles.
Operation and care of internal combustion, engines, chassis, parts and replacements.
Repair and maintenance of chassis and body components.
Ignition, electrical and cooling systems and fuel injection systems.
Hydraulic and air brakes.
Metal fabrications, welding, painting and body work.
Technical aspects of field of specialty.
Equipment modification and rebuilding techniques.
Health and safety regulations.
ABILITY TO:
Repair, overhaul and maintain heavy gasoline and diesel vehicles and construction
equipment.
Operate, service and make repairs on equipment.
Maintain routine records.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Perform heavy labor.
Diagnose and analyze problems with vehicles and equipment.
Use shop tools and testing equipment safely and efficiently.
Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment such as presses, welding
equipment, cutting torch, sandblaster, hydraulic jack, test equipment, fork lift,
back-hoe, vice, air compressor, portable generator and water pump, steam cleaner, chain
hoist, part washer, paint gun, chain saw, and precision measuring devices.
Weld with gas and electric.
Maintain organized and clean work area.
Meet schedules and time lines.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Provide work direction to others.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: three years journey-level experience in the repair and
maintenance of heavy vehicles and equipment; including experience working on diesel
engines.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California Class A driver's license or obtain license within six months of hire.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Outdoor environment; driving from site to site to conduct work and emergency call-outs in
hot, cold, windy and rainy weather.
Physical abilities required include dexterity of hands and fingers to operate vehicles,
equipment and tools, seeing to perform work and operate equipment, climbing on and off
large pieces of equipment, stooping, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and
horizontally, walking over rough uneven ground, balancing on high and narrow places,
lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds and pushing, pulling or dragging
heavy items weighing up to 200 pounds, perform heavy physical work, and standing for
extended periods of time.
Incumbents are exposed to dangerous substances such as diesel, gasoline, battery acid,
solvents, oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, and freon, adverse weather conditions, loud
equipment noise, working around and with machinery having moving parts, chemicals and
solvents, exhaust fumes, dust, and pollen.
