This month The New York Times Magazine featured a small CASNR-related news item. Peter Smith
noted that Toto, a tiny terrier with a big personality, lives with John McGlone, a researcher with Tech’s
Department of Animal and Food Sciences who studies androstenone, a swine pheromone used by pig
farmers. After testing it on Toto, McGlone did a wider study that found androstenone effective in
calming down boisterous, barking dogs. While canines are probably not imagining big boars, he isn’t
sure yet what the spray signals to them. “You don’t have to know why it works; you just know that it
works,” McGlone said, adding, “A dog will pause long enough for a postal worker to get out of the
yard.” more »
