Diary Of Emperors’ Teacher
The fifth generation of Weng
Tonghe’s family has donated 47
volumes of manuscript of Weng’s
diary to Shanghai Library. Weng
(1830-1904) was the teacher of
two Chinese emperors — Tongzhi and Guangxu, as well as an
important political figure in the
late Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The
diary started from July 31, 1857 to
June 27, 1904, seven days before
Weng’s death. It covered 46 years
of his life, which proved to be
an important piece of historical
material for the study of the late
Qing dynasty. The manuscript of
Weng’s literature collection was
also donated to the library. According to Wu Jianzhong, director at the library, all the materials
will be digitalized for academic
research, and an exhibition of
Weng’s diary is planned next year
for the public.
