ALTERNATIVE ULSTERS
Mark Carruthers in conversation with Susan McKay
All Tickets: £12
In his latest book, Alternative Ulsters, the broadcaster Mark Carruthers interviews
a wide range of high profile writers, actors, journalists and politicians, each of them
with an enduring Ulster connection. He uses his finely-tuned skills as an interviewer
to draw each contributor into a personal reflection on identity. The stories and
experiences that helped shape and influence each of the thirty-six interviewees
are presented here in a series of colourful, lively, and, at times, deeply moving,
exchanges. Together these conversations with those who know the place best,
explore Ulster in the twenty-first century, revealing a freshness of thought and a
richness of culture that rarely make the headlines.
Riverside is delighted to welcome both Mark and some other special guests, who will
be interviewed by journalist Susan McKay.
Susan McKay is a writer from Derry, whose prolific output includes two critically
acclaimed best sellers, Sophia’s Story, a biography of child abuse survivor Sophia
McColgan, and Northern Protestants: An Unsettled People, a portrait of the
community from which she comes, as well as a history of the Dublin Rape Crisis
Centre, Without Fear. Her book on the aftermath of the Irish conflict – Bear in Mind
These Dead – was published by Faber and Faber in June 2008.

THE HENRY GIRLS
A trio with the reputation of one of the finest musical
ensembles in Ireland
The Henry Girls, three sisters from Donegal, are establishing a reputation as
one of the finest musical groups in Ireland. The group was formed in 2002
and released its debut album, Between Us, in 2003. Since then the trio
has rapidly gained critical acclaim at home and abroad. In 2010 they were
nominated for an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Original Score for
the film A Shine of Rainbows, which featured songs from their third album
Dawn. The three are multi-instrumentalists who perform an eclectic mix of
traditional Irish music, folk and blues, with spine-tingling three-part vocal
harmonies, to produce a musical fusion of the Donegal coastline and the
Appalachian Mountains that combines something of our Irish heritage with a
more contemporary backdrop.

The Dolly Parton Story is a two hour journey through the sensational career of one
of country music’s most successful ladies. Dolly Parton’s career has spanned over
50 years and her most celebrated material features in this show, from her early
country classics such as ‘Coat of Many Colours’ and ‘Joshua’, through to the
later smash hits such as ‘Jolene’, ‘Islands in the Stream’, ‘I Will Always Love You’
and ‘9 to 5’. Andrea Pattison has been a professional singer for many years and
in that time, many people have commented on her similarity in sound and style
to Dolly Parton. As a life- long fan of Dolly’s, Andrea always took this as a huge
compliment, but it was only recently that she decided to use that aspect of her
talent to reach a wider audience. Now in its fifth year this great show has built up a
huge following around the UK and will be venturing further in the near future. With
an all live four piece band providing the sound and an array of amazing, rhinestone
encrusted replica costumes, this is a real treat for any Dolly Parton fan.

in Kate Rusby’s band of merry
men on guitar, and banjo! An
‘outstanding’ tenor banjo player
according to The Sunday Express and one of the leading exponents of the
instrument around the globe, Damien is also receiving rave reviews for his
‘resonant and hypnotic’ vocals (Irish Music Magazine), focusing on traditional
songs from his native Norn Iron and further afield, and putting his unique O’Kane
twist on them.
Beoga (gaelic for ‘lively’) are again
steeped in the Irish tradition. However,
they are not afraid to incorporate other
genres’ nuances into their music.
From bluesy riffs to Astor Piazolla-style
jazz, to a raunchy New Orleans
jamboree vibe, their music will always
returns to a wonderfully bouncy
Irish sound. The Wall Street Journal
describes them as “the most exciting
new traditional band to emerge from
Ireland this century.” Irish Music Magazine writes,
“Nobody does this stuff better at the moment. Beoga are at the
forefront of the new Irish wave.”

NRC Performing, Music and Production Arts,
in association with Josef Weinberger
presents The School Edition of
Les Misérables
The world’s Favourite Musical Blockbuster
Set in early 19th-century France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, a burly
French peasant of abnormal strength and potentially violent nature, and
his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having
stolen a loaf of bread for his starving sister’s child. Valjean decides to
break his parole and start his life anew after a kindly bishop inspires him
to, but he is relentlessly tracked down
by a police inspector named Javert.
Along the way, Valjean and a slew of
characters are swept into a revolutionary
period in France, where a group of
young idealists make their last stand
at a street barricade.
THIS IS THE SCHOOLS’
EDITION OF LES MISERABLES,
WHICH IS PERFORMED
ENTIRELY BY STUDENTS
AND NOT THE FULL
PRODUCTION
OF THE SHOW.
