Course Purpose/Objectives:
Understanding the fundamentals of computer nomenclature, particularly with respect to personal computer hardware
and software and the World Wide Web; also provides overview of develop an in-depth understanding of why
computers are essential components in business world and society in general; focus on the backbone of the computer
industry and emphasize its use as a stand along and networked device; present strategies for purchasing, installing,
and maintaining a personal computer system; also provides an overview of microcomputer application including an
overview of Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Office, Word 2007, Excel 2007, Access 2007, and PowerPoint
2007, and assist students in planning a career in the computer field.

Given a topic, use an internet browser and multiple search engines to generate appropriate information for a research
paper.
Demonstrate the use of common business software such as Word processing, Spreadsheets, Database manager system.
PowerPoint
Using presentation tools create a presentation following the design and content guidelines.
Given user need scenarios, specify various computer hardware configuration, including an explanation of operating
systems
Using a computer system as a basis, analyze system risk, perform computer maintenance, and establish computer
security
Identify various disciplines where computers can be useful in problem solving, information retrieval, control and
forecasting
Given a case study, analyze and design systems and implement solutions
Given a variety of business scenarios, analyze the use and application of computers in a variety of environments
Given user scenarios for electronic communication identify appropriate hardware and software.

Teaching Methods and Methods of Evaluation:

If student don’t have an email address one will be setup. Discussion is encouraged, as is studentprocured outside material relevant to topics. Online students must come in for Orientation on
February 17, 2009, from 12noon – 1:00 pm or, 6pm – 7:00 pm VT 126

NOTE: if you missed orientation make sure go to room VT216A open lab and see Ms. Beltran
for assistant.

These assignments may require the use of a computer. Computer-based assignments can be completed
on campus or at home, if you have a home PC with the appropriate software.

Exams: three exams including a comprehensive final will be given. The exams will be open
book/notes and are designed to test the students’ comprehension of material in the reading
assignments, as well as any additional material ss. Exams may consist of both written questions and
hands-on computer activities.
Make-up exams will be given only in rare situations and are submit to a minimum 20% penalty (at
least two letters grades). It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor PRIOR to the next
class meeting if an exam is missed and a make-up exam is requested.

Internet: Some assignments for this course will require the use of the Internet. In addition, it is
recommended that students take advantage of the resources Web links, Discussion Forum, Practice

Click on the New User Registration link to create your account once you have completed you are on the

Once on web site select a Chapter to begin assignments
Step 1: Select from the list on left column Exercises click on Checkpoint Click the link
to open one exercise window at a time. Complete the exercises Label the Figure,
True/False, Multiple Choice, Matching and Key Terms Your Choice.
Step 2: Quizzes and Learning Games make sure to include Practice Test for each
chapter.
Step 3: Using Case Studies students will click the discuss topic link to access the
Discussion Forum and discuss any of the Case Studies in this chapter with other
students.
(For example Chapter 1 click on Computer Software it opens a directory give a list
of computer software say you want to know about malicious software: viruses click
on a link open a cite to see more detail read it and now you ready to discuss the
topic. Click Discussion Forum tab located at top. It will open read the information

Course Policies:

Assignments Descriptions: All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due. Late
submission of assignment will be assessed a penalty of 10% per day. No exceptions are made.

Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism and cheating are serious violations of school policy and will not be
tolerated. Cheating on an exam or assignment will result in receiving a zero for the entire exam or
assignment and can lead to expulsion from the class or the University.

Need for Assistance: Please notify the instructor during the first week of class if any special
accommodations are needed for this course, due to a physical or learning disability. Please notify me as
soon as possible.

Posting of Grades: Final grades will not be posted. If you wish to have your final grade sent to you,
please bring self-addressed, stamped envelope to final exam.
Incomplete Policy: Students will not be given an incomplete grade in the course without sound reason and
documented evidence as described in the Student Handbook. In any case, for student to receive an
incomplete, he or she must be passing and must have completed a significant portion of the course.
