Architecture
NorthPark Center has won numerous awards beginning in 1966 with an American Institute of Architects
(AIA) Design of the Decade, followed by an Architectural Excellence Award for the Center's 25th
anniversary in 1980, and many times with the prestigious AIA Citation Award, including in 2006 for its 1.2million-square-foot, $250 million expansion.
NorthPark Center’s timeless architecture, signature white brick, neutral palette and highly polished floors
are a frame that showcases its spectacular collection of retailers. When NorthPark Center opened in 1965
as the largest climate-controlled retail establishment in the world, it was itself a work of art with clean,
modern lines and open space to display fine art incorporated into the design.
As NorthPark expanded, it remained true to that design returning to Omniplan, the architectural firm that
originally designed NorthPark Center, to shape the expansion. The result utilized the sensibilities of the
original design and materials, including a million bricks specially made in NorthPark's signature white
color.
Art Collection
Making museum-quality art available for everyday enjoyment is a NorthPark Center tradition that adds a
unique element to the atmosphere of this community-gathering place. Millions of people every year have
the opportunity to experience this fascinating and significant art located throughout NorthPark Center.

On view are major works from the Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Collection and the
Raymond and Patsy Nasher Collection, including those by renowned artists Andy Warhol, Frank Stella,
Joel Shapiro, Jim Dine, Jonathan Borofsky, James Rosenquist, Antony Gormley, Barry Flanagan, Beverly
Pepper, and many others.
Mark di Suvero's monumentally impressive 48-foot-tall, 12-ton Ad Astra, 2005, fills the two-story
NorthCourt where it can be viewed from two levels. This is the only indoor, public display of the artist's
work in the world. Mark di Suvero is a key figure in the development of postwar American sculpture and
his massive-scale sculptures, including Ad Astra, are constructed primarily from industrial I-beams that
are welded and bolted together.

from the NorthPark Center Concierge, located on Level One near Neiman Marcus and from the
NorthPark Center Management Office, located on Level One near Dillard's and on line at

In 2014, NorthPark Center presented a free public art exhibition of Brooklyn-based Chilean artist Iván
Navarro’s This Land Is Your Land. The work, which is now a permanent installation at NorthPark,
features three elevated wooden water towers serving as metaphors for the experience of immigration.
This Land Is Your Land is on view on Level One between Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom near Gucci,
TOD’S, Salvatore Ferragamo, and Versace.
The art program expanded in 2015 with the addition of a new manager of art programs who oversees
rotating works on loan, the digital art tour, educational initiatives and arts partnerships.
Leo Villareal will be joining the impressive list of artists whose work is displayed at NorthPark. Villareal is
one of today’s leading contemporary artists using light as a medium. He creates software programs that
sequence light patterns in infinite combinations, evolving randomly and changing constantly. NorthPark
Center will be receiving Diamond Sea as well as a new work commissioned specifically for the shopping
center, inspired by Villareal’s iconic Buckyball sculpture, in October 2015.
Landscaping
NorthPark Center’s extraordinary exterior and interior landscaping creates a welcoming and enduring
environment. Inside and out, the landscape changes each season with a vast array of color and texture.
Vivid seasonal plantings and mature live oaks and red oaks greet visitors at each entrance.
A unique 1.4-acre central garden, CenterPark Garden, is an urban retreat providing a beautiful place to
relax, dine and enjoy special events amid museum-quality sculpture, artful plantings, canopies of trees
and green expanses of lawn. NorthPark’s exceptional beauty has been honored over the years with an
International Council of Shopping Centers Merit Award, an Interiorscape Magazine Grand Award and a
special tribute from Preservation Dallas as “a timeless retail and dining environment.”
Brief History

NorthPark Center is privately owned, managed, operated and leased by husband and wife team, David J.
Haemisegger and Nancy A. Nasher, who continue a bold legacy. In 2006, they completed a 1.2-millionsquare-foot, $250 million expansion that draws in natural light and fits seamlessly into the original mall’s
sleek modern design. The expansion brought the total square footage of the shopping center to 2.3
million.
NorthPark Center officially opened on August 22, 1965 as the largest climate-controlled retailer center in
the world. It was conceived in the early 1960s by Dallas developer Raymond D. Nasher (with guidance
from his wife Patsy Nasher), who had the foresight to create a shopping destination on a 97-acre cotton
field on the edge of town. The original four anchors were Neiman Marcus, Woolworths, Titche-Goettinger
and the largest JCPenney store in the Southwest.
Since that day, NorthPark Center has defined retail in the southwest. Today, NorthPark Center is ranked
among the top five shopping destinations in the country. It is the top attraction in all of Dallas-Fort Worth
according to the Dallas Business Journal and is named one of the "7 Retail Wonders of the Modern
World" by Shopping Centers Today.
