PROJECT DESCRIPTION
NorthPark Center, located in Dallas, Texas, was a $15 million project requiring aproximately 4,000 tons of steel. This project consists of a two-story
expansion of an existing shopping mall. The mall was built in 1965, and
was one of the first enclosed shopping malls in Dallas. The expansion consists of multiple shopping corridors connected to the existing mall at each
end of the expansion. The original mall had a “U” shape and the expansion
closed off the end of the “U”, creating an unusual doughnut shape. An existing parking lot was converted into a 1.3 acre fully landscaped courtyard
in the “hole” of the doughnut. The new construction was approximately 1
million square feet and made NorthPark the largest mall in Texas. A new 15
screen movie theater was built on the third level of Mall Expansion requiring
several escape walkways, some of which had to be run across the existing mall roof. The east end of the movie theater extended approximately
60 feet over the existing mall for a lenght of 235 feet. This area was supported by 2 large trusses supported by columns extending down into the
existing mall. Coordination of erection timing, access, and sensitivity of the
surrounding existing building was very important. The converted courtyard
had existing trees that had to be protected and maneuvered around. The
existing mall remained open for business to the greatest extent possible. To
prevent endangering the public and employees of the mall all the areas that
required placing steel over the existing structure had to be erected at night.
