2006 Inst ructor Application
Thank you for your interest in becoming an Instructor for Remote Medical International. Instructors play a vital role
in maintaining a high standard for excellence by empowering students with knowledge and skills to confidently
provide care and rescue in places where a hospital is not an option. Each year, instructors are selected from a
large pool of applicants. The selection process is very strict, in that we only consider the individuals who have
significant experience and skill in the delivery of quality medical and rescue education.
Depending on skill, experience and training, Instructors are assigned to courses ranging from a two-day Wilderness
First Aid to a thirty-five day Wilderness EMT. They also teach advanced courses in wilderness medicine, marine
medicine, rope rescue, and advanced custom courses such as Wilderness EMT-I, and physician led military medicine
courses. Course locations vary greatly, and travel is required and paid for by Remote Medical International.
All new instructors are required to complete Remote Medical International’s 7-day instructor course. This
residential course is held in Washington State, and familiarizes instructors with our company, staff, business
systems, as well as our teaching philosophy and curriculum. Evenings are filled with lectures from our medical
advisors and senior instructors and have previously included high-angle night rescue practical, advanced wound
management techniques, pathophysiology of environmental emergencies, and expedition presentations. Following
successful completion of the course, instructors are placed on courses as Assistant Instructors.
Advancement is based on performance, curriculum mastery, and feedback from other instructors. In order to
advance to a lead-instructor position, instructors must pass an exam to demonstrate mastery of the curriculum as
well pass an oral board exam administered by at least two members of the medical advisory board and two
instructors.
