W Deborah Re Sharon McNally e want every girl in our City and region, to have the same access, opportunities, and experiences that we would want for our own children. In 2013, we moved closer to making this vision a reality. Through the attentive guidance of our Big Sister mentors, the support of our dedicated staff and the generosity of our community, we have impacted 2,600 girls, giving them the chance they deserve to reach their full potential. Our collaborative efforts throughout the region allow our Sisters to fully experience the riches of our City. We value our relationships with Boston’s institutions who liberally share their resources with us. In partnership with these organizations, we give our Sisters the chance to attend summer camp and find their undiscovered talents; to listen to the magnificent sounds of the Boston Symphony; to watch the strength of our championship sports teams; to witness the beauty of the Boston Ballet; and to explore the mysteries of our many museums. Our Sisters also have access to organizations that help them through the journey of college preparation as well as provide them with opportunities for scholarships. All of these experiences broaden their horizons and show them the possibilities for their future. In addition to these partnerships, we also rely on our strong relationships with government agencies to enhance the quality of life for our Sisters’ families. We help them to overcome obstacles with housing, healthcare, and employment. Our staff, who have the cultural competencies and can provide language translations, are liaisons to families to connect them to the right resources. We are conveners, connectors, and partners in creating opportunities for our Sisters and their families. We are excited about what’s on the horizon for Big Sister. With increased involvement from our community, we are reaching more girls and giving more adults the chance to engage in a meaningful way with the work that we do. We hear from our volunteers that they are changing how they view themselves as they mentor and guide their Sisters. Our Sisters are feeling more connected and less alone, taking advantage of the many opportunities that are available to them. We hope you enjoy reading their stories in this report: girls who are blossoming with the care, love, and guidance of their Big Sister and the Greater Boston community. We know that it is only through our collective effort, that we can ensure that every girl has the chance she deserves. It’s what we want for all our children. With gratitude, Deborah Re Chief Executive Officer Sharon McNally President Board of Directors www.bigsister.org2 Little Sister Blasmiry, 12, from Jamaica Plain and Big Sister Evelyn Reyes at Big Sister’s Annual Summer Picnic. big vision for Greater Boston’s girls. Since 1951, Big Sister Association’s mission has been to help girls reach their full potential by providing them with positive mentoring relationships with women, specifically tailored to the age, stage of development, and unique needs of each girl. Big Sister’s vision is to create a mentor-rich community in which every girl has access, without cost, to the individual nurturing, guidance, and support she needs to overcome challenges and become a confident, competent, and caring adult. We combine the established, research-based practices of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America with a gender-specific lens proven to increase positive outcomes for girls. At the heart of the organization are the Big Sisters who are the resources that girls need to develop their confidence, improve their relationships, and achieve their aspirations. Our 60 plus years of experience serving the girls of Greater Boston coupled with our innovative and dynamic programming, yields exceptional outcomes for girls. www.bigsister.org4 Little Sister Danielle, age 9, from Harbor Point on the Bay housing development and Big Sister Kimberly Marchand from South Boston. big community builds here. community partner of the year the harbor point collaborative Alex Baltazar Director of Resident Services, Housing Opportunities Unlimited at Harbor Point The Harbor Point Collaborative shares Big Sister’s deep commitment to the growth and development of girls, and the knowledge that it is essential to creating healthy, vibrant communities. The Collaborative is composed of The Harbor Point Community Task Force, dedicated to securing a decent living environment and promoting the social welfare of the low income residents; Housing Opportunities Unlimited which provides resident services; The American City Coalition, a non-profit support organization committed to neighborhood revitalization; and Corcoran-Jennison Companies which manages the property. The Collaborative reached out to Big Sister to help them meet the needs of girls residing at Harbor Point; they raised funds, mobilized community support, and provided safe secure venues for Big and Little Sisters to meet, for parent orientations, and for match support programs. Working together we exceeded our goals for serving girls and their families. We value the Harbor Point Collaborative’s commitment to ensuring that every girl reaches her full potential. www.bigsister.org6 Volunteers from our corporate partner, John Hancock Financial Services, Inc. big community takes dedication. In our largest, signature program, Community-Based Mentoring, girls can remain Little Sisters until the age of 20, at which time they are then old enough to become Big Sisters. While our Little Sisters come from a wide range of ethnic, socio-economic, and family backgrounds, our typical Little Sister is 12 years old; living with a single mother in Dorchester or Roxbury; and is Black or Hispanic. Opposite is a further breakdown of these demographics. As the youngest child in her family, she watched her older siblings benefit from having Big Sisters and Big Brothers; she wanted to have some fun, too! Of course, Shada and her Big Sister Sharon Jones do have fun, but that just scratches the surface on what these Sisters have together. When Sharon and Shada first met, Sharon remembers all the insecurities she felt: “I was anxious. I thought she would think I was too old to be a Big Sister.” Sharon also recalls Shada being reserved, which heightened her anxiety during their initial meeting. Sharon’s concerns proved to be unfounded, as the pair have developed a strong bond. After two and a half years together, Sharon already knows, “I will be Shada’s friend for the rest of her life. She’s got a place in our family, and in our hearts.” Still, like all relationships, theirs took time to grow. 29 As a way to spend quality time together and to help Shada become more comfortable, Sharon decided to invite her Little Sister to her home for weekly Sunday dinners. Sharon and Shada talk about what kinds of foods they enjoy, and those they dislike; and then, plan the menu. Not only are their selections a joint decision, but they also shop for the ingredients, and make the entire menu from scratch. This weekly activity proves to be a great way to build their friendship, expand their horizons, and learn together. Sharon and Shada consider nutritional content and healthy habits, Sharon says: “We talk about making sure we’re eating foods that are going to help our bodies, and that we take care of ourselves.” Each week, Sharon pushed Shada to taste new foods and attempt new techniques. From squeezing juice, to rolling pasta, to grinding their own meat, they invest time in creating the meal and getting to know each other. The learning doesn’t stop at cooking. These Sisters frequently seek out other opportunities to discover new interests: attending musical performances, going to museums, and trying new movies at the local theaters. Sharon believes the most important lesson she has learned from Shada is about determination: “Willpower goes a long way,” says Sharon, “When she makes up her mind, she makes things happen.” For example, Shada loves fine art, and Sharon jokes, “If you ever go to the museum with her, she has to look at every single display. Every piece of china, every painting!” Indeed, nothing seems to be able to stop Shada; and, Sharon encourages that resolve every step of the way. When Sharon learned that Shada had a fear of swimming — in part because of a negative experience as a child but also thanks to some common insecurities — she decided that this was a challenge she could help her Little Sister overcome. Sharon and her family had a vacation home in Maine, and swimming was part of the Big Sister 2013 Annual Report daily, summer routine. She knew that with a bit of encouragement, Shada would conquer that anxiety. With the support of her Big Sister, Little Sister Shada bravely approached the water near Sharon’s Maine vacation home. At first, she just waded around with the other children. After a Shada describes having a Big Sister as “someone who pushes you to excellence,” and she takes those lessons with her in other aspects of her life. Big Sister Sharon and Shada’s mother Paula established an academic rewards system that everyone could get excited about; and Shada responded well. Since “I will be Shada’s friend for the rest of her life. She’s got a place in our family, and in our hearts.” few hours, her fears diminished and she grew more and more courageous in the water. Not only did Shada overcome her fear, but she also learned how to swim. understand what the impact is, when you’re in the relationship; but I see such growth and so much potential in Shada, and I’m so happy that she’s in our life.” Sharon is an advocate, both for Shada and for Big Sister Association. Thanks to her support, Shada attended a sleep-away summer camp for the first time, through a partnership between Big Sister Association and The Summer Camp in Bridgton, Maine. Through her employer, Sharon was able to recommend Big Sister for a charitable grant. In two years, Big Sister Association has received $15,000 from the Staples Foundation, making it possible to match more girls with a caring Big Sister like Sharon. being matched, Shada has adopted a can-do attitude when it comes to school. She is now focused in the classroom, and over the past year, she has made significant improvements in both her grades and school attendance. Sharon says, “It’s hard to www.bigsister.org30 big dreams need nurturing. Match photo big sister of the year rosemary aylward & little sister joeanna W hen Big Sister Rosemary Aylward and Little Sister Joeanna first met, more than seven years ago, they were nervous. The experience they were about to have was new for both of them. Though she wanted a Big Sister, Little Sister Joeanna was so reserved during their first visits, she didn’t speak. Instead, she drew pictures to communicate to Rosemary how she was feeling and what she wanted to say. Seven years later, conversation comes easily. They call themselves true sisters, and support one another in their ongoing development as individuals, friends, and women. Boston was already mentoring students in Joeanna’s Charlestown school; so, a Big Sister seemed like just the right resource. Little Sister Joeanna, born and raised in Charlestown, was in 2nd grade at the Warren-Prescott Elementary School when she first met Rosemary, in 2006. In the year before they met, Joeanna had experienced some difficulty and loss. She was spending valuable classroom time in the school nurse’s office; her mother and school administrators knew she needed a little extra support. Big Sister Association of Greater The pair met every week, building their relationship while doing a creative activity, playing a game, or just talking. “In a way, we are totally different from each other, but we can relate at the same time,” said Little Sister Joeanna. In their weekly time together, Joeanna might share a story about her friends or something she read or heard on the news. If Rosemary had a similar experience, but thought about it differently, she’d challenge her Little Sister. In this way, these 31 Rosemary, who grew up in Medford, was 51 years-old when she signed up to be a Big Sister. With an academic background in child education, Rosemary had been a successful volunteer tutor to other children in the neighborhood. Since she had the flexibility in her schedule, working at Delta Dental in Charlestown, Joeanna thought that the time was right to become a Big Sister. Sisters respectfully pushed one another to expand their thinking and embrace new perspectives. Weeks turned into months, which turned into years, and soon it was time for Joeanna to graduate from elementary school. Typically, when middle school student responsibilities increase and schedules become more variable, Little Sisters choose to start meeting with their Big Sisters on the weekends. Since their mentoring relationship continued to thrive in the school setting, the Sisters asked if they could keep meeting, at Joeanna’s new school. So, Big Sister Association contacted the middle school administrators and facilitated the transition, providing ongoing support to Big Sister Rosemary and Little Sister Joeanna. Since their first visits at the Warren-Prescott, Joeanna has experienced a number of transitions and obstacles in her academic and personal life. Rosemary has helped build resiliency in Joeanna and, most importantly, has taught her Little Sister that she has Big Sister 2013 Annual Report the tools to overcome any obstacle she faces. Rosemary guides Joeanna to use her artistic talents to reflect on whatever is happening around her, and to respond in a healthy way. Recently, Joeanna began writing; support her and listen to her, and respecting who she is as an individual. Joeanna explained that Rosemary gives her advice about school, about her relationships with her peers and her family, but that “the more we can share with each other, with our real sisters, and our adopted sisters and soul sisters, the better we all are for that.” and, Rosemary has enthusiastically encouraged this meaningful, creative outlet. “One of the things that I have been impressed by in Joeanna is that she is able to take her feelings and reflect upon them, and express them through poetry. She writes beautifully; and I think one of the things that has given me confidence in [our relationship] is the privilege she has given me by sharing her poems.” Joeanna appreciates Rosemary for being there to she does so in a comforting way, void of expectations or judgement. Rosemary has been by Joeanna’s side throughout elementary school and middle school, and she continues to mentor her now that she is in high school.“What if I didn’t get a Big Sister?” Little Sister Joeanna wondered, “I don’t think I would be the same. It is a privilege to have a mentor because a lot of kids don’t have that. And without having someone to look up to, people can be kind of just stuck where they are.” Both Big Sister Rosemary and Little Sister Joeanna want to see more Sisters flourish and connect. Rosemary said that by bringing her together with Joeanna, Big Sister Association has created sisters for life. “This is my sister forever, and whatever happens, wherever we are, we are sisters,” Rosemary said. Rosemary wants to encourage all women to see in their Sisters the opportunity for mutual support, to grow and become stronger individuals. “We are all connected to each other and are stronger for that connection. So the more we can share with each other, with our real sisters, and our adopted sisters and soul sisters, the better we all are for that.” www.bigsister.org32 “women, Confident girls become confident and confident women influence family life and the life of the communities in which they live in positive ways. ” – Charlie Baker, General Catalyst Partners Row 1 (left to right): Big Sister Anouska Bhattacharyya and Little Sister D’vine at the Dorchester Day Parade, Big and Little Sisters learn from students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Big Sister Theresa Werth and Little Sister Lilliana at a Big Sister facilitated workshop Row 2 (left to right): Little Sister Emily and Big Sister Meghan Keenan enjoying a picnic in the park, Little Sister Annie and Big Sister Rhee-Soo Lee swimming at Big Sister’s Annual Summer Picnic, Big Sister Adebimpe Dare and Little Sister Chavelyn with the 2013 Red Sox World Series Trophy Row 3 (left to right): Little Sister Dyanna and Big Sister Candace Bon at a Demi Lovato concert donated by Microsoft, Big and Little Sisters at a Teens Gives Back service day, Big and Little Sisters taking salsa lessons donated by the Dance Complex www.bigsister.org34 Big Sister Board member, Thomas M. Menino to our Board of Directors. In his 20 years as leader of this City, more than 15,000 girls have been given the opportunity to reach their full potential through the love and care of a Big Sister. As Mayor, Menino demonstrated his complete commitment to the mission of Big Sister. He not only talked about the importance of mentoring girls, he also did something about it. He hosted a volunteer recruitment event at the Parkman House for more than 100 women, encouraging them to become Big Sisters — and they did. He attended all our events, and not for the photo op: he stayed throughout every function big or small, showing Big Sisters and Little Sisters how much he cared. He took the time to talk to our Little Sisters, asking them where they went to school, what their goals were, and listening to their stories. Menino established numerous alliances and committees focused on youth. He developed the Girls’ Campaign, a coalition of girl-serving organizations who come together to address critical issues that impact girls throughout our City. He started the Mayor’s Youth Council, meeting with and listening to Boston’s teens and their concerns for the future. He also formed the Boston Youth Fund, which gives high school students employment opportunities, and also pays the hiring company, like Big Sister, to support, train, and mentor them. He took the time to get to know the staff of Big Sister, and, he took the time to mentor our chief executive. It was a natural transition to ask him to consider joining the Board of Directors. As Mayor, Menino created a city for girls to succeed. We look forward to our continued partnership with him in this critical work on behalf of girls. During the enrollment interview, Blasmiry told Big Sister’s staff that she always wanted an older sister: someone in her life to look up to and someone she could talk to about anything. She shared that having a Big Sister would ease her loneliness, especially on the weekends when she found herself bored, with “nothing much to do.” When Big Sister’s Enrollment & Matching Specialist met Evelyn Reyes, an energetic, accomplished young professional, she knew just the Little Sister for her. Both Little Sister Blasmiry and Big Sister Evelyn were born and raised in Boston with their familial roots in the Dominican Republic. Evelyn would not only be able to communicate directly with Blasmiry’s Spanish-speaking parents, but she would also share an understanding of what it’s like to grow up in Boston with an extended family far from home. Blasmiry was 41 Match photo eager to learn and to venture out; and Evelyn couldn’t wait to get started as her Big Sister. When Evelyn went to Blasmiry’s house with her Match Support Specialist, to meet her Little Sister for the first time, she brought a gift: a composition notebook. As they got to know each other that day, Evelyn explained the purpose of the notebook. They talked about the fun things they would do together. Evelyn suggested to Blasmiry that she write about what she thought of their experiences, what she learned, and how she felt. Since that first day, Evelyn has encouraged Blasmiry to cultivate self-expression, openness, and honesty. Many of their favorite memories include first-time experiences that they’ve shared. Big Sister Association provides an opportunity for a handful of Sisters to go to camp together at Camp Fleur de Lis. She and Blasmiry agreed it would be an exciting adventure to have together since neither of them had ever been to sleep-away camp. They spent the weekend doing typical summer camp things, like archery and pottery. “We got to do things that we were doing for the first time, each of us, but we got to do it together,” said Evelyn. Blasmiry’s mom Wendy recalls another firsttime experience that may not have been asmuch fun, but was certainly significant to go through together: getting braces. When Wendy learned that Blasmiry needed braces, she worried. “What would her peers think of her? Would she be bullied?” Coincidentally, Evelyn had recently gotten braces. Evelyn was there to offer guidance and support to both of them! Big Sister Evelyn confidently smiled broadly, showing her Little Sister that it was okay to have braces, and she didn’t have to hide her cheerful smile. Evelyn told Blasmiry that she should be confident in whom she is, and trust that having — or not having braces — would not change the wonderful qualities that make her who she is on the inside. Blasmiry also knows that her Big Sister has taught her valuable skills and life lessons. When the opportunity arose to participate in a city-wide entrepreneurship program called Lemonade Day, the Sisters jumped at Big Sister 2013 Annual Report the chance. Like most of the activities they did together, Evelyn saw what a great learning opportunity this could be for Blasmiry, through a wonderfully age appropriate activity: a lemonade stand. The pair explored the various aspects of starting a business, and added a charitable mortgages and loans. From the factors to consider when purchasing a home to running a profitable lemonade stand, to being comfortable in your own skin, Big Sister Evelyn picks the right moments to share her knowledge with Blasmiry, helping to prepare her for her future. “Evelyn has helped me become a better person. She makes me feel happy and proud of myself; when I’m with her it’s like a breath of fresh air. I feel like I can do anything.” element to their stand. They decided to give part of the proceeds from their lemonade sales to Big Sister Association of Greater Boston, so the organization could support other girls waiting for a Big Sister. Later in their relationship, when Evelyn was buying a home, she included Blasmiry in the process, teaching her about And Blasmiry listens. She is 12 now, and in the years with her Big Sister Evelyn, Blasmiry has expanded her horizons, improved relationships with those around her, and built her confidence.“Evelyn is a very positive person and she helps me in so many ways. For example, she once told me that you should always look for options before making a decision.” And, it’s not only Blasmiry that appreciates Evelyn’s influence. Blasmiry is the oldest of four siblings, and her mother Wendy knows that having the individualized attention of a Big Sister has made a big difference in her daughter’s life. Mom said, “Evelyn motivates Blasmiry to do better in school and always encourages her, if she feels like she is not doing her best. She helps my daughter learn more, about herself, and about her future.” “Evelyn has helped me become a better person. She makes me feel happy and proud of myself; when I’m with her it’s like a breath of fresh air. I feel like I can do anything.” For her dedication to her Little Sister, and for the many ways in which Evelyn Reyes has supported Big Sister Association through advocacy efforts, we recognize her as a Big Sister of the Year. www.bigsister.org42 “ inspiration to young girls in Boston.
