Introduction
As the predecessor of Modern Feminist society, Kate Chopin discovered bold new
characterization of her Female subject. Chopin is well-known for her progressive representation
of female characters in the stories. Kate Chopin was an American author of short stories and
novels and her famous works are The Awakening, The Story of an Hour and The Storm, among
other works. She was born in Saint Louis (Missouri) in 1853 and died in New Orleans
(Louisiana) in 1904. She is considered one of the leading female voices in American literature of
the second half of the nineteenth century.
Discussion
The 2 of these stories, “The Storm” and 'The Story of an Hour,' study and refute the long
held model of submissive wife. 'The Storm,' was written in year 1898 but was not published till
later as its challenging content, describes the fervent extramarital issues among Alcee & Calixta
a past lover. 'The Story of an Hour' follows Louise Mallard as she manages with her Husband’s
Death. Chopin makes uses of the extraordinary occasions in characters lives to carry them out of
unconsciousness of submissive life (Emily, 68-70). In both the stories, Female character awakens
3
from the wedding induce dream and into the condition of Self Awareness as the person
individual from her Husband.
The story of an Hour starts with the introduction of major character to reader. The leading
role of the story is played by Mrs. Mallard. She is a young Woman with the calm and fair face.
The story of an Hour commences with sad news. The sister of Mallard, Josephine and her friend
of her Husband Richards try to tell the death of her Husband. At the subsequent hour she faces
discrepant view. The Readers might observe Repression or specific power on her face. She is
married but sad from her Marriage. She is concealed by her husband, who will bend her. She
took it for the Granted (Emily, 72-75). Finally anything comes to her and she realizes the reality
that now she is free of charge and she becomes a Personality. But unexpected image of her
Husband ruins the Dreams and cause the death of Major Heroine.
"The Storm" starts on the stormy spring day, with protagonist Calixta at her stitching
machine. She was alone and her son Bibi and Husband Bobinot were gone to store for Shopping.
There was a link among the Storm which was going over the outside and storm of Emotions
were going in Alcee and Calixta. The weather sends Calixta into the arms of Alcee's, he wraps
his Arms around her and they might no longer conceal their views for each other. Calixta permits
Alcee into her Home and speaks her complete world to Him. They provided into the intense
feelings and made the love. The weather Outside was subsiding and bodies of Alcee's & Calixta
feels calmed and relaxed. Calixta appears to be the Bored Woman, limited to the duties as
mother and Housewife. As distant storm approach that she was unaware of what storm will carry
her former lover Alcee.
At the starting of the 2nd part, author tries to reflect her sadness at initial moments by
receiving the news. She improves the desired impact with the assistance of inversion “there stand
4
at armchair”, “into the she sank”; metaphor pressed down by the material exhaustion which
haunted the whole body. The normal Atmosphere of “The story of an Hour” is emotional,
dramatic, exciting, intriguing and Topical. The Author’s approach towards the events and
characters were serious. It was uttered impersonally, from the explanation of feelings of major
characters. The author raises the tension with the unexpected finish, leaving Questions opened,
permitting the reader to reflect over finishing by him. It became lighter and more constructive.
When author describes the scene at the back of window, a natural scene, she describe the spring
that reflects the awakening of life. It concerns for not only nature, but also Mrs. Mallard. Kate
resort towards the use of metaphors such as “Aquiver with fresh spring life”, “patches of blue
sky” and “countless sparrows”.
The story under analysis is called Story of an Hour and belongs to a psychological type
including social element because the author depicts the inner world of the main character, her
thoughts about her future life which reflect relations between men and women at the end of the
19th century. Born into a family of immigrants in the French and Irish origins, Chopin always
lived in the Southern states of Missouri and Louisiana, surrounded by the Creole society that
knew then reflect perfectly in her short stories to become one of the writers who best captured
the hallmarks of her countrymen. In late 1880s, Kate published the small story articles &
Translations that come in the Newspapers monthly. Though she was soon highly praised as the
Author by her explanation of Southern community and her literary virtues passed over ignored
(Paul, 103-106).
According to the story, a marriage is something very nice to be sharing our life with
person we love. From the moment we decide to be with this person, the first thing we have to
keep it into account is worrying that he lacks nothing for the health and welfare. Basically it is
5
the only thing and the first thing we think when something bad happens. In the story of Storm,
we can capture few of these. The story starts with the bobbinet and bib (father and son) that are
out and about doing shopping in that they realize that a huge storm is approaching and decide to
stay the rain Friedheimer shop. They sit in a cuvette and bib his father tells him that Mom will be
scared, what gives the tranquilazandolo understand that we will be fine (Emily, 2009). Bobinot
rises and buy shrimp that loves both Calixta perhaps to make people feel better after the scare
Calixta back home. It is notable that the first thing they think about is preoucupa and welfare
Calixta.
The Story of an Hour follows Louise Mallard as she tackles with her Husband’s death.
Chopin makes use of the unexpected events in characters lives to carry them out of passive
living. In both the stories, the female characters awaken from the marriage induce dream and into
the condition of Self Awareness as the person divides from her Husband. A Marriage which has
long joys to share, blessings and disappointments of children should be a strong and complete of
Mutual Respect marriage (Claudia, 67). The Strong foremost issues, reflecting to our partner and
be mainly strong against all temptation. It is a bigger duty which comes as we are no longer has
to think of two, if not for the welfare of the family, mainly the children. In Storm, we can see the
lack of these values in particular Calixta. Do not hesitate to give the entrance to your home alee
one of his past loves, first disrespecting.
As the storm begins, Alcee Labelliere arrives seeking shelter on the porch of Calixta.
Together, they save her husband's clothes and notes that Seyersted Alcee records pants man
whose privilege it soon usurped. Alcee Calixta face with the coat of Bobbin in his hands,
protected by her husband's clothes as if the man himself. Alcee is practical and useful in this
situation, take pieces of clothing before they fly away in the wind is referred to the liveliness of
6
Calixta. There is also a description of his room, which with its white, monumental bed its
closure. The Shutters seems to be dark and Mysterious. Her married life is indeed mysterious
Alcee an area he does not know that there is also a suggestion of fear that something is supposed
to be closed and is hidden between two of them. Calixta hastens to collect cotton sheets that she
was sewing and referring again to the room (Emily, 2009).
In “The Story of an Hour," Mrs Mallard was first considered as a wife that might not
possibly be talented to grasp news of her Husband loss. A wife that has love her Husband
unconditionally regardless of any regret. Yet, this facade was soon exposed by author when Mrs
Mallard's pain turns into the joyous success if we will of her husband’s death. Mrs. Mallard
seems to have a difficult time in grasping the thought of moving on with the life without her
Husband rather than news of the Death (Claudia, 62-64).
The author reflects this when soon after news of her now dead husband was told to her
she silently whispers Free, free, free in the 10th line. In the number 7, she was immature with a
calm & fair face, whose lines were specially made with the repression and even specific strength
indicates her character as one which bares worrying ideas & memories which she is now free
from as her husband was dead.
Something to impact of Mrs. Mallard & Calixta are 2 very dissimilar characters
developed by the complicated & Multi faceted Authors. Mrs Mallard on one hand was a
repressed woman that was puzzled by husband death. Calixta, in comparison is strongly
distressed at thinking of her husband and child being in the danger from storm. We might also
discuss that our points and examples of interest are further on in the paper (Anonym, 29).
In "The Storm," wife Calixta is identified as spiritual housewife but immorally behaves.
Calixta gets concerned in much passionate moments with the older filing while her relatives were
7
out at the Friedheimer's store waiting out for the storm. She appears like a much happier
housewife that resigns to the typical lifestyle of women of her time at the Home sewing and
doing the House chores (Chopin, 18-21). She appears to be more apparently loving and reflecting
deep anxiety for her husband & child out in storm but makes use of the storm to flee for while.
Apparently, both the Women Victims of their times are willing to escape their Truth yet
if it killed them. They were trapped in the marriages with the husbands as they do not love. The
ironical twist of situation causes to think that they are never truthfully in love with Men in their
lives. Mrs. Mallard was delighted by having lost her husband and now faces the freedom which
she might not dies and handle (Chopin, 65-67). Calixta also manages to slip the cheap thrill that
why her family is out in the dynamic storm and will eventually carry on doing as since Alcee
will be free from his wife for sometimes. Both of the stories emerge out to be regarding the
freedom from which women in Victorian period does not possess.
Later, the story says that they does not challenge to return to sleep and sleepiness, an
interesting comparison with what they have dare to provide. The Part of what is concerned
appears to be a genuine desire not to hurt Bobbin, they are not eager to do or risk of that
occurring. Indeed, as reported by the language used to describe the scene & Alcee Calixta shared
appears to have a consecration of their own and Arner said that Chopin will accept this. To this
end, it is a realistic pioneers somebody who not only sees what happen in reality, but has guts to
declare which it calls (Anonym, 26-28).
8
Conclusion
The story tone suggests that in Calixta there was always been the hidden storm left
unbroken and undisturbed by the marriage & family sentiment. Before the marriage, she
discovered in it, flirting around. At present, as the mother and wife she cares regarding her
family sufficient to try to repress his flirtatious nature and carry on with the focus on emotional
storm which lies in it. It is, however unable to completely repress the storm. Certainly, it is under
the Daily Housekeeper, Calixta was the other woman that might reply Alcee with the feelings
and power. This is in no case however that the actual face of Calixta as it has several characters it
is lover the wife and caring mother and woman that frets and sews his son. Readers, however
have the thought that all the personas indicates only the part of who she actually is but with
Alcee it approximate the complete or present who she really is.
