Re: Grade 9 Registration at Riverdale C.I. for 2009-2010
To ensure compliance with the Toronto District School Board’s Attendance Review Committee
(ARC) rules, Riverdale Collegiate Institute has implemented two procedures to compliment our
application/registration process for incoming Grade 9 students for the 2009-2010 school year.
Firstly, Riverdale Collegiate’s optional attendance status for Regular Program for 2009-2010
remains “closed”. Consequently, only students who live in the Riverdale C.I. catchment area
are eligible for enrolment in our regular program. To ensure there are no registration errors and
prevent student disappointment, every feeder school has been asked to attach a current, up to
date copy of the student index card for each student who applies to attend Grade 9 at Riverdale
in September 2009. Students currently not enrolled in a T.D.S.B. school/program, will need to
provide two proofs of address to Riverdale C.I.. These applications and proof(s) of address must
be delivered to Riverdale by the students' home school by March 2nd, 2009. A listing of
acceptable proof of address may be found on the third page of this memo. If additional proof is
required this should be delivered to Riverdale by the Parent/Guardian of the student.
Secondly, Grade 9 enrolment in our Extended French program is “limited”. For September 2009
the number of students entitled to register is capped at a maximum of 60 students. Priority for
these places will be given to current Extended French students from our 3 main feeder
schools, Bowmore Rd., Queen Alexandra and Earl Grey. We expect that most of the 60
spots will be taken by Extended French students from the aforementioned schools.
Subsequently, we will be holding lottery for any remaining spaces in the Extended French
Program. This lottery will apply to current or former French Immersion students who will be
entering Grade 9 in September 2009. In the event that applications exceed spaces for the
Extended French program, the following procedure will take place:
1. All students from a designated Extended French Feeder School will be offered
placement.
2. A waitlist will be developed for Extended French students from non feeder school
programs and for French Immersion applicants.
3. Placement on the waitlist will be determined by a lottery (see below) and only
students who live in the Riverdale catchment area will be advised to apply to
Riverdale under the Regular Program.

4. On March 2nd, 2009 all applicants who have applied/accepted a placement in French
Immersion at another TDSB Secondary School. will be removed from the waitlist
5. After March 2nd, 2009 if spaces within the original cap of 60 students become
available, placement will be offered to students who have been previously accepted
into the Regular program at Riverdale. This process will remain in effect until
October 1st, 2009.
In order to facilitate this process, we will be following Optional Attendance procedures.
Consequently, Immersion/Former Immersion students who wish to apply for Riverdale’s
Extended French Program must apply to Riverdale under Optional Attendance. The deadline for
this application is February 2nd, 2009. On February 12th, 2009, we will determine the final
projection for the remaining spaces in the Extended French Program. A lottery will then be held
under the supervision of Superintendent Jill Worthy. Parents and guardians will be informed by
February 13th 2008 about the status of their child's application (i.e. acceptance or placement on
our waiting list). If the parents choose to accept the placement, the feeder school will then
forward the Grade 9 Course Selection Sheet to Riverdale C.I. by March 2, 2009. Finally, if
parents or guardians decline the spot in Extended French, the first student on the waiting list
will be offered placement at Riverdale.
For your information, during last year’s application process, we projected 75 students would
enter Extended French. As of December 15th, 2008, we are again projecting that we will exceed
our cap of 60 students, but we will be to confirm this until early February 2009.
Please note that all applications for admission (Grade 9 Course Selection Sheets) for September
2009 must be received by March 2nd, 2009. During the month of March 2009, we will verify
the addresses of all applicants who apply to ensure that they live in district and are eligible for
admission. Applicants who are deemed ineligible (based on their address) will not be offered a
placement for September 2009 and will be referred to their “home school” for placement.
