St. Bernard holds
113th Commencement
St. Bernard Prep School in Cullman
graduated twenty-one seniors on Sunday, May
27th in an impressive ceremony conducted in
the Abbey Church and under the direction of
Fr. Joel Martin, President of the School. After
welcoming members of the Board of
Directors, the faculty, the staff and the invited
guests, Fr. Joel noted that this year’s
graduating seniors had the distinction of
earning almost $2 million dollars in
scholarships and were accepted into 36
colleges and universities.
As part of the 113th commencement
exercises, the St. Bernard Board of Directors
recognized two alumni who received the
“Distinguished Alumnus Award.” Bernard F.
Morrey, M.D., Emeritus Chair of the
Department of Orthopedics, and the John and
Posy Krehbiel Professor of Orthopedic
Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota,
and Phillip B. Rooney, philanthropist and
former President and CEO of Waste
Management Corporation, were inducted into
the St. Bernard Distinguished Alumnus Class
of 2012. Fr. Marcus Voss, Director of
Development of St. Bernard Prep School,
presided over this portion of the graduation
ceremonies.
Abbot Cletus D. Meagher, O.S.B., was the
main celebrant and homilist at the
Baccalaureate Mass held earlier in the day.
During his homily he reminded the graduates
of the challenges they will meet, especially as
they learn to exercise their freedoms as young
adults. Dr. Bernard F. Morrey delivered the
Commencement address, demonstrating a true
gift for storytelling by emphasizing three
pieces of advice for each graduate: 1) Choose
a career path of which one is passionate, 2) Be
willing to try new challenges so one may live
up to one’s potential, and 3) Don’t be afraid of
failure along the way to success.
After the commencement address, John
Tekulve, Headmaster of Saint Bernard
Preparatory School, announced this year’s
graduation awards. Goun Choi received the
valedictorian award while Savannah Faye
Beaver was named salutatorian. In giving the
general excellence medal, the highest award
given to a graduating senior, Fr. Joel stated
that “the criteria for this award requires that a
student must be enrolled at St. Bernard Prep
for the last two full years, be dedicated to
academic excellence, exercise leadership and
represent the values of the school.” The 2012
general excellence medal was presented to
Madeline Grace Schweers.
Diplomas were presented to the graduating
seniors by Abbot Cletus Meagher with Fr. Joel
Martin assisting him. After the awarding of the
diplomas, Goun Choi gave the valedictory
address during which she highlighted the
importance of the journey that will lead this

THE TIME-HONORED TRADITION of tossing the graduation
hats was upheld by this year's graduating seniors of Saint
Bernard Preparatory School. The 21 graduates garnered almost
$2M in scholarships to 36 prestigious universities.

Goun (Yoon) Choi
Valedictorian for 2012
I would like to welcome all
our families and friends to
this graduation of 2012. I
thank you for coming to help
us celebrate this wonderful
day. Especially I would like
to thank Abbot Cletus, Fr.
Joel, Mr. Tekulve, and our
wonderful teachers for their
tremendous effort in making
this day possible. It is an
honor for me to stand and
represent the class of 2012 on
this day of our graduation.
…..Oliver Wendell
Holmes, a great American
author, once said, “The great
thing in the world is not so
much where we stand, as in
what direction we are
moving.” We are standing at

a turning point in our lives
today. Up to this point, we
were like children who have
been protected and guided by
our parents, or our teachers or
even the monks. Up to this
point, we have been guided
by others. Today we start out
on a new direction. We must
set new goals. We may
become doctors, or teachers
or business people. Whatever
we do, today we must look to
the future. It is there that we
will give a new definition to
our lives. My hope for all of
us is that we set the right
goals and make our lives
something very extraordinary.
…..Today may be the last
day that we will all be
together in one place. But, if
it does happen that are
together again, I want us to
be proud of the lives we have
chosen. So, now we go
forward. God bless you.
Congratulations Class of
2012! Thank you.

Alumni recognized at Commencement Exercises
St. Bernard Abbey and Prep School recognized
two St. Bernard College alumni as part of the 113th
Commencement Ceremonies held on Pentecost
Sunday, May 27, 2012, in the Abbey Church. Phillip
B. Rooney, college class of 1966, and Bernard F.
Morrey, college class of 1965, were the recipients of
the St. Bernard Distinguished Alumnus Award for
2012. The awards were presented by Abbot Cletus
Meagher, O.S.B., Chairman of the Board.
After his service in the Marines, during which
time he received the Bronze Star and Navy
Commendation Medal, Phil Rooney began his
business career in Chicago, IL, his home town. He
joined Waste Management Corporation in 1969 and
by 1984 was the President of the company. When
he completed his term as President and CEO in
1997, the company had reached $10 billion in
revenues.
Recognized for his business acumen, Rooney has
served on many and various boards including Illinois
Tool Works, Caremark International, Van Kampen
Fund and Stone Container Corporation.
ServiceMaster, Wheelabrator Technologies and Rust
International likewise benefited from his leadership.
Today his chairmanships
include Nationwide Studios,
Claddagh Investment
Company and the Edgewater
Fund which takes in Bolder’s
Specialty Testing Group.
In concert with his
leadership in business, he
serves on educational, civic
and community boards
including Notre Dame
University, After School
Matters, Children at the
Crossroads Foundation and
the Chicago Cultural Center.
Phil Rooney The Heart Institute of
Hinsdale Hospital, named in honor of his father,
stands as a witness to his concern for the human
community. A dedicated family man, Rooney and
his wife, Sue, have four children and eleven
grandchildren.
“It’s with a sense of high regard that we honor
Phil today,” said Abbot Cletus. “It’s my hope that
the education he received at St. Bernard played a
significant role in his outlook on life and helped
prepare him for his success. With that success has
come his philanthropy to so many. We take great
pride in recognizing Phil as an alumnus of St.
Bernard.”
Bernard Morrey, a native of Fort Worth, TX,
enrolled in the medical school at the University of
Texas Medical Branch soon after his graduation
from St Bernard College. An internship and
residency followed at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester,
MN, during which time he received a Master’s
Degree in Biomechanics from the University of
Minnesota. After two years of military service, he
joined the staff of the Mayo Clinic in 1978.
During his medical career, Morrey has received
numerous awards and honors, not to mention
professional memberships
and recognitions. He holds
seven patents for orthopedic
devices and has authored
twelve major textbooks
under four different titles that
have become standard fare
for doctors training to
become orthopedic surgeons.
These works have been
translated into five
languages.
For eight years he served
on the Board of Governors
of the Mayo Clinic. He is a
Dr. Morrey Fulbright Scholar and has
been a consultant to the National Football League
and to the Orthopedic Device Panel of the Food and
Drug Administration. A master surgeon, he has
treated not only Presidents of the United States but
also countless others who have found healing
because of his dedication and zeal. A proud father
and husband, he and his wife, Carla, a registered
nurse, have four children and twelve grandchildren.
“Bernie has had a tremendously positive influence
in the science and art of medicine,” said Abbot
Cletus. “St. Bernard was his spring board not only
in his education but especially in his dedication to
helping others through the medical arts. We hold
him in high esteem as a member of the St. Bernard
alumni family.”
In concluding his remarks, Abbot Cletus said,
“This has been a wonderful opportunity to honor
both of these men. Not only are we proud that they
are graduates from St. Bernard but, even more, we
are proud that they are our friends.”

28th annual SBP Bloomin’ Festival best ever
School officials at St.
Bernard Preparatory School
in Cullman were elated with
the 28th Annual Bloomin’
Festival. Threats of rain
didn’t dampen the spirits of
the school community as they
hosted one of the best
festivals to date.
Festival director, Joyce Nix
awoke Saturday morning and
headed straight for the
computer to check weather
radar. “When I checked the
weather, Cullman was in a
dry pocket with rain all
around us. After seeing that,
I knew God had answered
prayers again. We had cooler
weather with some wind but
thankfully no rain!”
Visitors expressed their
delight in the show by stating
the quality of the arts and
crafts was superb. Monk’s
Bread was a huge hit as
festival goers stood in line for
fresh monk’s bread and rye
bread.
Br. Thomas Jones was
swamped by the attention
received from monk’s bread.
“We got an early start and
could have sold thousands
more. Hopefully next year
we can have more prepared
ahead of time.”
The artisans were very
pleased with the outcome of
the two-day event. Billy and
Peggy Goodman, who have
been with the festival for at
least 15 years said it was their
best show ever. “Our
birdhouses went like
hotcakes.”
Janice Beck of Boca Raton,
Florida was elated with her
outstanding weekend by
selling four original paintings
on Saturday alone. “Just
hours after the festival
director posted a photo on
facebook of me with my
newest painting, a patron
brought the photo to my
booth and purchased the
painting.”
Visitors enjoyed a wide
variety of live demonstrations
from glass blowing, broom
making, blacksmithing, and a
working grist mill where hot
cakes were being made.
Completing the festival
was the giveaway of some
fabulous prizes. The winners
were as follows:
2012 Jeep Patriot – Mr.
Richard Zimmer - Villa
Hills, KY
2 nights at Zoder’s Inn –
Gatlinburg, TN – Kathy
Nequett - Birmingham, AL
Panasonic Lumix Camera –
David Locker – Florence, AL

Saint Bernard wishes to
thank all who helped make
this festival a huge success.

10K/5K Trail Race held during Bloomin’ Festival
Runners leave from the
starting line for the
10K/5K run
A record-breaking 108 athletes registered to run the 10K or 5K trail race held
during St. Bernard’s Bloomin’ Festival. Despite an overcast sky, 103 runners
finished the race. This race was the very first one on the newly-developed trails
that extended the area from a 5K to a 10K course.
Winning times for the 5K trail were 19:36 for the male category, captured by
Freddie Shirah, and 22:45 for the female category, won by Ayleana Mami. Tim
Lee ran the trail in 22:15 to win the 5K masters male division, and Shannon
Barnett took the 5K masters female division with a 29:51 run.
Running time for the 10K male category was a strong 39:31, netted by Joey
Bemowski. Joann Jetton won the 10K female division by running the course in
54:47. As for the 10K masters male race, Eric Fillinger finished with a
convincing 43:41 time.
St. Bernard teachers and coaches were well represented in the field of
competitors. Stephen Calvert, SBP teacher and coach, finished 2nd overall in
the 10K race, and Martha Wells, an SBP Middle School teacher, was one of the
age-group winners in the 10K.
“The course was very challenging, but all agreed, it was worth the effort.
Runners came from as far away as Mobile to run. Birmingham, Huntsville,
Decatur, and Moulton were among the North Alabama communities
represented, in addition to Cullman. The majority were locals who love the
trails of St. Bernard, including the current SBP students, faculty, and alumni.
We look forward to seeing the race grow in future years as word spreads about
our magnificent trails,” said William Calvert, Race Director.

Varquez Named Distinguished Young Woman
Representing Saint Bernard Preparatory School,
Caitlin Varquez warmed the hearts of both
competitors and judges as she competed recently in
the Cullman County 2013 Distinguished Young
Women’s (DYW) Competition held at Wallace State
Community College.
Caitlin prepared for weeks for this extremely
fierce competition, in which young women are
judged in areas of self-expression, talent, academics,
and personal interview poise. DYW is not a typical
beauty contest, but instead, is an academic program
designed to help promote women and to recognize
them for their academic excellence as well as
community involvement.
“It was one of the most memorable evenings of
my life,” Caitlin said. “I prayed that God would
give me what I deserved, and that the person who
wins, be most deserving.” Evidently Caitlin’s
fellow contestants thought her to be very deserving
as she was chosen by them to receive the Spirit
Award, earning her a $250 scholarship.
The honors did not end there. With her uplifting
rendition of “If They Could See Me Now,” from the
Broadway Play, Sweet Charity, Caitlin captured the
talent portion of the pageant, earning her an $800
scholarship.
With alarming statistics and an obvious passion
for the subject, Ms. Varquez did an excellent job of
explaining her platform to the judges and audience
members: to educate women about the risk
associated with heart disease, and to promote
wellness and fitness among women. Before the
evening was over, this petite young woman with a
bright, engaging smile, earned not only a dualenrollment scholarship to Wallace State Community
College for her academic achievements, but
garnered the overall $3,000 scholarship when she
was named the Distinguished Young Woman for
Cullman County 2012.
“We are delighted to have Caitlin represent St.
Bernard Prep and Cullman,” said Fr. Joel Martin,
President of Saint Bernard Preparatory School.
“She is a remarkably talented young lady, and we
know good things are in her future.”
Caitlin is the daughter of Dr.’s Genaro and Mir
Varquez of Cullman. She will represent Cullman
County in the state competition to be held January
12-19, 2013 in Montgomery, Alabama.

St. Bernard
Happenings
SBP Annual Athletic Awards Banquet
Students, family and friends
gathered in the Fazi-Richard
Athletic Center to honor student
athletes for their dedication and
hard work representing St. Bernard
Prep in athletic programs for the
2011-12 academic year.
Coaches recognized each team
of students and presented awards
accordingly. Athletic Director,
Wade Knight, said each student
contributed to the success of the
athletic program and commended
parents and students for their
support.
Cross Country had an
exceptional year. The girls’ team
placed 1st in the 1A2A Sectional
meet and placed 3rd out of 12
teams in the state finals. The boys’
team came in 2nd in the 1A2A
Sectional meet and was 5th out of
12 teams in the state finals.
Ayleana Mami, who was the
Cullman City/County Campion and
placed 1st for the team in 5 meets,
was recognized as the Most
Valuable Runner in the girls’
program. Will Faulk, who was the
Section 3 and Cullman
City/County Champion and placed
1st for the team in 11 meets, was
the Most Valuable Runner in the
boys’ program. Most Outstanding
Girls’ All Area 1-A Basketball
Aymee Chauvin and Andrea Naranjo.
Track Team Standouts
Front Row (l-r) Jaden Edge, Ayleana Mami, Logan
Ayers. Back row: Will Faulk and Steven Mami.
Runner awards were presented to
Seamus Russell, who placed 9th in
Section 3, and Logan Ayers, who
was the Section 3 Champion.
The Swim Team had a very
successful season with Bennett
Glasscock making All-State in the
100 Backstoke by finishing 8th at
the AHSAA Swim Meet held at
Auburn University. Swimming
recognizes no classifications so 1A
through 6A schools complete
against each other. Despite this
tough competition, Bennett and
Sean Moriarty both made
qualifying times to compete at the
State Meet. At the 40 team meet in
the McCallie Invitational in
Chattanooga, TN, Glasscock made
the “A” final in Backstoke (5th
place) and Butterfly (7th place) and
Moriarty made the “B” final in
freestyle (12th place). Also
receiving recognition were John
Paul Stolz (Freshman) and Morgan
Matz (Middle School).
Abigail Mescher and Zoie
Wilson were standouts in the
volleyball arena where both girls
were named to the All Area Team.
The Lady Saints came in 2nd in the
1A Area Tournament this year and
look forward to the growth of the
program in coming years.
Basketball saw a muchimproved year. JaDavian Roland
and Sean Moriarty were named to
Basketball All-Area and the
Cullman Times All-County
Honorable Mention Team.
Moriarty achieved a double-double
season, meaning that for the season
his scoring average was in double
figures (13.8) as well as his
rebounding average (12.4). For
girls’ basketball, Aymee Chauvin
and Andrea Naranjo made All-Area
in the 1A competition. Like the
boys, the girls will graduate only
one senior so the future looks good
for both boys and girls basketball.
The girls’ soccer season began
with the team being undefeated and
not scored upon by the other teams
in the first five games of the season.
The team was especially noted for
its youth since over half of the
players were students enrolled in
the 7th to 9th grades. Andrea
Naranjo was recognized as the Best
Defensive Player and So Hyun Park
as the Best Offensive Player. In the
boys’ soccer program, the team
took some amazing wins despite
the loss of senior talent to last
year’s graduation. John Schneider
was recognized as the Most
Dependable Player, Jacob Mynatt
as the Best Offensive Player and
Michael Schartung for Best
Defensive Player.
The boys’ baseball team steadily
improved this year as it played a
roster of young talent against
opponents from 2A, 3A and 4A

St. Bernard
Abbey news
Abbot Victor Clark celebrates 25th Abbatial Anniversary
Abbot Victor Clark celebrated
his 25th anniversary of election
as the 8th Abbot of St. Bernard
Abbey on June 11, 2012. As part
of the festivities, Fr. Joel Martin,
O.S.B. preached the following
homily during the Eucharist
celebrated that day.
Today we celebrate the feast
of St. Barnabas, an apostle of the
Lord. We have no record of
Barnabas preaching, though of
course he did preach. There is
no New Testament book written
by Barnabas. What we do know
is that he did the important thing,
more important than words; he
gave his life to Christ – literally.
That’s why we see the color red
in the vestments we wear:
Barnabas was a martyr; he truly
gave himself away.
That’s appropriate today
because we honor our Abbot
Victor, who, in action more than
in words, gives us a great
example of a life given to Christ.
P. Abbot Victor, congratulations
on your 25th year anniversary as
abbot, though we know that it’s
the last 17 years of that 25 that
you most appreciate. Surely
being abbot is certainly
something you never asked for
nor wanted, you did it because
you were asked to do so by the
community that you love. That’s
a wonderful thing – thank you.
I want to mention a few facts
about your life at St. Bernard.
Some people here already know
them, but it’s good for all of us
to be more aware, and thus more
thankful. I know that you don’t
like this, but maybe you will
offer it up.
Abbot Victor was born in
1930 in Cullman and grew up in
this town. People joke that he is
related to half the Catholic
population. But most obvious to
us is his nephew Fr. Marcus, and
his sister, Sr. Mary Jude.
Abbot Victor grew up in the
shadow of St. Bernard and as a
young boy came to this place for
high school. He attended St.
Bernard Junior College for two
years, entered novitiate in 1948
and vows in 1949; then was sent
to St. Benedict’s in Atchison for
philosophical studies. Then he
returned to St. Bernard and
received his theological training
and was ordained at the age of
24 in 1954.
Before and after ordination
Abbot Victor served in so many
ways, especially in St. Bernard’s
call to educate, particularly in the
prep school seminary program,
where he was its principal for
some time – until 1962, when
one of his students was David
Meagher – known now as Abbot
Cletus.
Abbot Victor did graduate
studies in biology and received a
masters degree from Auburn
University. He taught biology up
through 1979. He became head
of the biology department, he
served as dean of men and lived
as a proctor in the dorms. He has
also held a number of
responsibilities in the abbey:
procurator, prior and frequently
elected to the senior council.
Abbot Hilary sent him to Lower
Alabama to serve as pastor of St.
Bartholomew parish in Elberta.
Fr. Victor was elected abbot
in 1987 and served for eight
years, stepping down in 1995.
Shortly after that, he was
assigned to St. Michael's Church
in St. Florian, Alabama. Then, at
his request, he returned to the
abbey at the end of 2008.
It seems too obvious to state,
but I will: Abbot Victor has been
a model monk, serving God in
this our home, and in any
capacity asked of him – always
dutiful and disciplined. Thank
you, P. Abbot. You’re not
known for saying a lot; all we
have to do is look at your life;
and of course that’s how to say it
best.
Abbot Victor has one
complaint these days: that he
can’t remember things as he once
did. But it seems to me that he
remembers more about the
history of our monastery than
anybody else here. And that
history is dear to him – he was

year’s graduates to their life
goals.
Fr. Joel Martin ended the
ceremony calling attention to the
role that challenges play in life.
“We need challenges because we
come alive in struggles,” he said.
“We have high expectations for
your future. You’re made for
greatness. Go and take St.
Bernard with you.”
Music for the graduation
exercises was provided by Dr.
Rebecca Whited, as well as the
Alabama Pipes and Drums
Corps. The Knights of
Columbus Fourth Degree Honor
Guard of the Fr. Leo Carter
Assembly 2624 also participated
in the ceremonies.

responsible for compiling it in
text and photographs while he
was abbot and you can find that
document in the library – or ask
him for a copy. But aside from
that, P. Abbot, you obviously
remember the important things,
and you act on them: #1: the call
to pray, and #2: the call to work.
God knows both of those are
obvious right now to anybody
who knows the sound of your
lawn mower, and the voice of a
man praising God.
Standing before God in the
Abbey Church, all of us monks
have been asked this question:
“What do you ask of God and
His holy Church?” And we’ve
responded with this answer: “the
mercy of God and the grace to
serve him faithfully in this
community.” P. Abbot Victor, at
times I’m sure God has seemed
not so merciful in what he’s
called you to do, but thank you
for taking the grace he’s given
you to do it, that is, to serve Him
– and therefore us – in this
community. At age 82, you’re at
the top of your game, and it only
gets better. God bless you.

Carpenter shop designs and builds new
doors for St. Bernard Abbey Church
The doors of the Abbey
Church have undergone many
repairs since they were installed
in the 1960s. Facing the western
sun with its intense heat, their
constant use, and the effects of
the rain and weather have caused
a great deal of deterioration these
many years. Recent attempts at
yet another repair have been
unsuccessful because of the condition of the wood.
With the encouragement of
Abbot Cletus Meagher, and funding by Chris and Carol Rooney,
the staff of the St. Bernard
Carpenter Shop developed a
design and constructed new doors
to replace the failing doors. The
new doors were built in the
Abbey Carpenter Shop under the
direction of master craftsman,
Dennis Hazard. The wood being
used for this project was harvested from the trees located on St.
Bernard property.
“The wood we are using in
this construction was cut and
stored over 50 years ago by Fr.
Adrian Donauer, one of our
deceased monks,” said Abbot
Cletus. “Fr. Adrian operated our
sawmill and cut lumber of the
highest quality. His hard work is
still benefiting the monks today.”
“The wood has a teak veneer
to help withstand the natural elements and the design of the new
doors follows the pattern established in the architecture of the
Church,” continued Abbot Cletus.
“Each door has eighteen small
windows which provide light into
the vestibule of the Abbey
Church. These windows are dou-
ble-paned with tinted bronze glass
on the outside and clear glass on
the inside.”

Alumni Reunion Weekend...
From the Abbot’s desk
As I write, the annual Alumni Reunion Weekend is upon us and, as is customary, old
friends and classmates reconnect, campus tours are conducted, the annual golf
tournament crowns its winners, festivities are celebrated, graduating classes ending in
two and seven, e.g. 1972 (40 years) 1987 (35 years), are feted, and reports are presented
at a ‘town hall’ meeting of all alumni, family and friends.
It is a joy for me, as Abbot, to be able to state unequivocally that God has blessed St.
Bernard Abbey and Preparatory School in great abundance. There is a sense of life and
vitality within the Abbey and Prep School that is cause for optimism and hope for the
future. Of course, that future has its foundation in the past sacrifices of so many. The
present generation, aware of the sacrifices of the past, is seeking to preserve the values
and legacy handed down to us and now striving to secure the future for the next
generation of monks and Bernardians. Great efforts and concrete achievements have
been made as we try to ensure a future at St. Bernard. I would like to discuss four areas
where progress is measurable.
First, the monastic community: God has blessed us with many vocations in the past
15 years – almost half of our present community in that time period. Our numbers have
remained steady even in the face of the death of seventeen of our members since I
became abbot. We continue to attract new members who are making life-long
commitments professing solemn vows and some in continuing studies for priestly
orders. At present, we have five monks in various stages of their further education.
This summer we are receiving three new candidates who wish to ‘try’ the monastic
vocation. A community alive with young monks and new vocations is cause for great
joy and offers great promise for the future – both in the monastic community and for the
ongoing apostolic efforts of the community in the Prep School.
The second cause for rejoicing is the Prep School: we continue to graduate young
men and women who excel in the classroom. The twenty-one graduates of the class of
2011-2012 garnered $2,000,000.00 in scholarship offers – a great sign of their potential
and an indication that SBP is preparing them well for their academic future. Enrollment
for the Fall 2012 is very encouraging and promises to be the largest in the history of
SBP since its refounding in 1984. Outside the classroom St. Bernard Prep has produced
State Championships in the Cross Country and Track Program and Swimming. Such
accolades, in and outside the classroom, give us cause for pride in their achievements
and bode well for the future of the programs in place in the prep school. However, it
must be mentioned that these young men and women did not do this on their own.
Their accomplishments are also a reflection of the dedicated administrators, faculty,
staff, and coaches of St. Bernard Prep.
At the commencement ceremony this year the “Distinguished Alumnus Award” was
bestowed upon two former graduates of St. Bernard College: Dr. Bernard F. Morrey and
Mr. Phillip B. Rooney. Each, as chronicled in this edition of the St. Bernard
Happenings, has made a significant impact in their chosen professional field of
endeavor. Rightfully so, we take great pride in men of such accomplishment even as we
have great expectations of the Bernardians who come after them.
A third point that shows great progress is the work of preservation and renovation
of the facilities on campus. With the closing of the college in 1979 many of the
buildings fell into disuse and have suffered from lack of maintenance. Over the past
five years, because of wise stewardship in our limited resources and the generosity of
you, our alumni, friends and benefactors, we have begun to reclaim and stabilize many

of the buildings on campus. There is still much work to be done but to present we have
replaced roofs on the Abbey Church, Placid Hall, the Administration Building and the
Barns on the farm; new windows have been installed in the Abbey Church, the
Monastery, Founders Hall / Middle School, and the Dining Hall. Because of the
continued growth of the Prep School plans are being made to reclaim and renovate the
Heidrich Library to again house the school library, classrooms, teachers’ offices and
also create an area for the Abbey Archives and display of some of our artifacts. Plans
are being drawn up to convert the large hay barn on the farm into a performing arts
center. The ‘barn arts center’ will be temporary until we are able to construct a new
Fine Arts Center. This conversion process is the cause of much excitement as we
repurpose this grand structure.
Finally and fourthly, the Clairvaux Society named after our patron St. Bernard of
Clairvaux, a Planned Giving Program has been put in place.
Its purpose is to ensure, or maybe better, to secure, the future for the coming
generations of monks and the Prep School. In developing our St. Bernard Abbey
Strategic Plan 2010-2019 we set an endowment goal of $10,000,000.00 to be pledged
through Planned Giving during this period of time. At present we have 22 founding
members, who have pledged through wills, trusts, and insurance premiums, over 3.6
million dollars. Obviously, this is not ‘money in hand’ but it will come in the future to
secure the future and legacy that has been entrusted to us. I ask your prayers for the
continued success of this program and I invite you, our friends and benefactors, to
consider becoming a Founding Member
of this vital program.
In closing, I wish to thank all of you for
your many generosities and prayerful
support of St. Bernard. In my tenure as
Abbot I have considered my sacred task to
be a good steward of the love and legacy of
those monks who have gone before us and
an honor to be entrusted with the love and
friendship of so many who have supported
them and us in our efforts to be a living and
vital symbol of God’s love and mercy – a
God who has richly blessed us in the past
and even unto today with monks who come
to seek his will and join us in furthering the
task of our Benedictine forefathers.
May our good and holy God continue to
bless us all and strengthen us in our resolve
to do his holy will and bring us to the joy of
a future that is secure in his love for now
and eternity.
May God Bless and Keep us all in his
love.

Annual Monastic Retreat held at St. Bernard
During the month of June, the monks of St. Bernard gather for their
annual monastic retreat. This year the retreat opened on Monday, June
11th after Vespers and closed on Friday, June 15th with the celebration
of the Eucharist. The Retreat Master was Fr. Meinrad Miller, O.S.B., a
monk of St. Benedict’s Abbey, Atchison, KS.
Fr. Meinrad completed his seminary studies at St. Vincent Archabbey,
Labrobe, PA, before undertaking assignments at St. Benedict’s Abbey.
His current duties include Formation Director and Novice Master, SubPrior, theology professor and assistant chaplain at Benedictine College,
Atchison, KS. As part of his retreat assignments, he has given seminars
on the topic of the Paschal Mystery in the Church for the Missionaries
of Charity, the religious group founded by Mother Theresa of Calcutta.
After the initial conference given on Monday, Fr. Meinrad gave three
conferences a day before a final conference given on Friday morning.
Using St Benedict’s admonition to prefer nothing to Christ, Fr. Meinrad
used a gospel-based theology to develop this theme. He encouraged the
monks, as well as every believer, to see all reality connected to God.
At the Mass on Friday morning, the monks renewed their vows in a
ceremony typically done at the end of the annual retreat. Following
Mass, the monastic chapter convened with Abbot Cletus presiding. The
schedule of events concluded with noon prayer in the Abbey Church
and a lunch in the monastic refectory.

St. Bernard Abbey Monks in First Vows
God has abundantly blessed
St. Bernard Abbey with
vocations recently, with six
junior monks in the house.
Junior monks have taken first
vows, but have not yet taken
solemn vows, which are taken
three years later. Our juniors
are a very diverse group,
ranging in ages 21 to 52, and
coming from distinctly
different backgrounds. Each
one has unique talents and
abilities, and has thus been
able to serve the Abbey in a
variety of ways since entering
the monastery. In order of
seniority, the junior monks
include Br. Anselm Kuehler,
Br. Bernard Denson, Br.
Martin Weidner, Br. Josemaria
Balderas, Br. Thomas Jones,
and Br. Linus Klucsarits. A
short bio for each of our junior
monks follows.
Br. Anselm Kuehler, age
52, was born in Dallas, TX.
He graduated from Huntsville
High School in 1978 and the
University of Dallas with a
major in English Literature.
After graduation he served for
a year as assistant to the
director of the Rome, Italy
campus of the University of
Dallas. Before coming to St.
Bernard Abbey in 2008 he
taught Theology at Bishop
Lynch High School in Dallas,
St. Ann’s in Decatur and St.
Bernard Prep. Since entering
the monastery he has taught
Theology in the Prep School
and served as an assistant
dorm director. Br. Anselm is
scheduled to take solemn
vows on 20 August 2012, the
Feast of St. Bernard.
Br. Bernard Denson, age
21, was born in Gadsden, AL.
He graduated from St.
Bernard Prep in 2009 and
entered the monastery a few
weeks later. Since entering he
has served as an assistant
vocation director. This has
involved giving retreats and
visiting high schools. He is
currently a student at St.
Benedict College, Atchison,
KS majoring in Philosophy
and English, and is on the
Dean’s List. This summer he
is working on the grounds.
Br. Martin Weidner, age
42, was born in St. Louis,
Junior Monks as shown from le ft to ri ght: Br. Anse l m Kue hl e r, O.S.B., Br. Be rna rd De nson, O.S.B.,

MO. He graduated from JFK
High School in St. Louis in
1988. After high school he
attended Central Missouri and
Meramec Community
College, and worked in
security in the St. Louis area.
Entering the monastery in
2009, Br. Martin has worked
in the Grotto Gift Shop and on
the grounds crew, and he
managed our short-lived pig
farm. Br. Martin currently
attends Wallace State studying
Business Management.
Br. Josemaria Balderas,
age 27, was born in
Porterville, CA. He graduated
from Frazier High School in
Strathmore, CA in 2002. After
high school he attended
Porterville College studying
Music, and Fresno IT studying
Culinary Arts. Before coming
to St. Bernard in 2009 Br.
Josemaria worked as a
carpenter and did youth
ministry at St. Ann,
Porterville. He currently
studies Philosophy/Theology
at St. Benedict, Atchison KS
with a minor in Music. This
summer he is working on the
grounds.
Br. Thomas Jones, age 30,
was born in Birmingham, AL.
He graduated from Sumiton
Christian School in 2000. He
received an Associate Degree
from Bevill State in 2002 and
a BS in Psychology in 2004.
After graduation he worked at
the Association of Retarded
Citizens. Since coming to St.
Bernard in 2010 he has
worked on the Grotto grounds,
did support work for St.
Bernard Prep, worked as
assistant sacristan and, best of
all, bakes our wonderful
Monk’s Bread.
Br. Linus Klucsarits, age
46, was born in Allentown,
PA. He graduated from
Allentown Central Catholic in
1983. He then graduated from
St. Charles College Seminary
in Philadelphia in 1987 with
BA in Philosophy. He
obtained an MA in Sign
Language Interpreting from
Gallaudet University in 1990,
and taught Sign Language
Interpretation at Camden, NJ
Community College. Prior to
coming to St. Bernard he had
completed a novitiate at St.
Vincent, Latrobe, PA. Br.
Linus entered and took
temporary vows at St. Bernard
in 2012. Since coming to St.
Bernard he has taught
Theology in the Prep School.
Next year, in addition to
Theology, he will inaugurate
our new English as a Second
Language Program. He
currently takes graduate
classes in English as a Second
Language at UAB.
St. Bernard Abbey is truly
blessed to have these fine men
in our monastery. They bring
many needed skills and talents
to our community. Please pray
for their spiritual growth and
perseverance.

Summer projects to make campus more energy efficient
Each summer St. Bernard Abbey
undertakes projects for the improvement of its campus and its facilities.
This tradition will continue this summer with the primary work focusing
on making Founders’ Hall (building
next to the lake) and the St. Bernard
Dining Hall more energy efficient.
Energy efficient windows were
installed in the upper part of
Founders’ Hall several years ago.
This summer work has already begun
to remove the remaining single-pane
windows and replace them with environmentally-rated double-pane windows. The expectation is that this
will result in a significant reduction in
the utility usage for Founders’ Hall.
The cost to replace these windows
will be $24,000.
Last year all the old windows in
St. Bernard Dining Hall were
replaced with units that are energy
efficient resulting in double-digit savings. Plans for this summer call for
the replacement of high-use lighting
fixtures with new energy efficient
ones. This will result in a further
reduction of energy use. In addition,
the main dining room will be repaint-

schools. The new score board
installed this season is indicative of
the confidence and expectations the
team has of itself as it looks to the
future. Miles Bennett received the
Most Valuable Player award, Jacob
Grey was the Best Offensive Player
and Mauricio Rosa was the Best
Defensive Player. The girls’ softball
team brought home some hard-fought
wins and makes plans to continue
along that path. Recognized as the
Best All-Around Player was Jerrica
Crawford, Best Offense Player was
Halle Webb and Best Defensive
Player was Zoie Wilson.
The tennis team brought home
several wins against strong
competition. Alex Ginas and Ethan
Arndt were especially recognized for
their contributions this year.
The track program won sectional
and state honors. In 1A2A the boys’
team placed 5th out of 12 teams in
Section and 7th out of 34 teams in
the State meet. The girls’ team in
1A2A placed 5th out of 12 teams in
the Section and 6th place out of 33
teams in the State. Will Faulk
received the Most Outstanding
Performer award in recognition of
the exceptional 36 points he scored
in the State meet by winning the 1A
State Championship in 3 events (800,
1600, and 3200). Steven Mami
received Best Young Performer
recognition for his performance and

This work will cost $15,000.
Another project that is already
underway is the replacement of the
Placid Hall roof which was damaged
by the April 2011 tornadoes. The
new roofing material plus insulation
will make this building much more
energy efficient. Much of the financial outlay for this project has already
been received. $45,000 will be needed to complete the work.
The total cost for these projects
comes to $84,000. Inserted in this
issue of The Happenings is an envelope for the Summer Appeal. Your
generous support will make it possible for us to complete these much
needed improvements. For years to
come, your gift will keep on giving
as St. Bernard becomes more and

Cullman athletes participate in running camp
Sweltering Alabama
temperatures in the high 90’s did
not hamper thirty-seven young
athletes at the St. Bernard “A
Step Ahead” Running Camp.
Athletes recently finished three
weeks of running camp with an
emphasis on promoting good
racing techniques and strategies.
St Bernard coaches, William
Calvert and Stephen Calvert as
well as Mason Dye of Cullman
High School have spent the past
three weeks leading workouts
and running in the early morning
hours training student athletes on
the wooded trails of St. Bernard.
Dr. Eric Fillinger, DPM also
provided instruction during the
camp.
“We have put a lot of work
into these trails, and are happy
that coaches from the county
have trusted us with their
athletes and allowed them to
participate in the running camp,”
Coach William Calvert said.
Attending the camp on the
last day before the July 4th
Holiday was Palee Myrex of
Cold Springs. Myrex, a former
student of SBP Coach William
Calvert, is currently attending
the University of Alabama
where she is a member of the
UA Track Team.
“Always be a motivator for
someone else,” Myrex said to
runners. “When I first started
running, I remember setting
goals for myself. I just wanted
to win a t-shirt, then I wanted to
win a race and be done, but after
winning state title I was on top
of the world.” Her journey
continues at the University of
Alabama where she recently ran
the 5K with a time of 17:43 and
was an SEC Championship
qualifier.
Myrex was pleased to see
such an interest in young
athletes. When speaking with
students just before awards,
Myrex said, “You are very
fortunate to have access to these
awesome trails. Keep taking
advantage of them, but most
importantly listen to your
coaches and to yourself.”
‘A Step Ahead’ awards were
presented to the top male and
female athletes running the 5K
and 2 mile races. St. Bernard’s
Steven Mami captured the first
place male spot with a time of
19:40; Logan Ayers, also from
St. Bernard, took the first place
female spot with a time of
22:37. Second Place was
claimed by Cullman’s Devin
Hall 20:13 and St. Bernard’s
Ayleana Mami 22:42. Third
place went to Cullman’s
Nicholas Fillinger 20:17 and
Megan Pendley 25:54.
Finishing in fourth was St.
Bernard’s Oscar Perez 21:46 and
fifth place was Fairview’s Reese
Walker with a time of 22:32.
The two-mile male and
female ‘A Step Ahead’ awards
were as follows: 1st place
Graham Sanders 15:05 and
Leah Rose Mami 17:29. Both
winners are St. Bernard Middle
School students. Second place
finishers were Cullman sixth
grader Elijah Miller 15:06 and
St. Bernard’s Cailin O’Donnell
17:38. Third place was awarded
to Cullman’s Emily Little.
The camp will resume after
the July 4th Holiday with
practice sessions on Monday and
Thursday mornings until August
2.

Track Team brings home 14 medals
Saint Bernard students set
another historical milestone
recently at the State AHSAA
1A-3A Track and Field
Competition in Selma, Alabama.
The team of eight athletes
brought home fourteen All-State
medals, four gold, one silver and
nine bronze. Will Faulk earned
three gold medals, Ayleana
Mami had one gold, Logan
Ayers had one silver and one
bronze, and the boys’ and girls’
relay teams earned eight bronze.
In the 1A overall team
competition, the girls finished in
6th place and the boys finished
7th. Will Faulk scored a total of
36 points in the state meet.
Faulk was the dominant
runner in his three distance
races. He finished first in the
800- (2:02.25) and 3,200-meter
runs (10:17.97). That pair of
victories was followed by a
victory in the 1,600-meter run
(4:37.78).
“A triple win at a state meet is
pretty rare,” Saints’ coach,
William Calvert, said. “For a
distance runner to do it, that’s
just an unbelievable
achievement. Winning the 800,
1,600 and 3,200, is an awesome
feat. I was really excited to see
him accomplish that.”
Faulk, Seamus Russell, Oscar
Perez and Steven Mami took
third in the 4x800-meter relay
held on Friday.
In the girls’ competition,
Ayleana Mami won her second
state title in a row in the 3,200meter run (12:05.74). She ran
fourth in the 800-meter run.
Logan Ayers, another talented
St. Bernard runner, contributed
to the team effort with a secondplace finish in the 800-meter
run, third-place spot in the
1,600-meter run, and seventh
place finish in the long jump.
Mami, Ayers, Morgan Matz
and Jaden Edge took third-place
in the 4x800-meter relay on
Friday.
Coach Calvert said, “St.
Bernard Prep School is certainly
being recognized state wide as
an up and coming program in
track and field as well as in
cross country. This is due
primarily to these students’ hard
work and dedication to
excellence as well as their
competitive spirit.”
The St. Bernard students
currently train on the wooded
trails of St. Bernard which are
used for cross country 5K/10K
races. “The school is being
pushed to build a track,” said
Calvert. “In the mean time, we
do the best we can with what we
have and hope our success at the
state level will continue. Each
year our program grows and
winning will help encourage
more students to participate next
year.”

Camp provides
players experience
The St. Bernard Varsity
Basketball Program held its
summer camp in the FaziRichard Athletic Center May
29th through June 2nd. St.
Bernard hosted a series of
games with other area schools
with most games starting at
9:00 am and continuing
throughout the day till 3:00
pm.
Schools that participated in
the competition included:
Vinemont, Blountsville,
Asbury, Winston County,
Susan Moore, and West End.
“We scheduled the camps
this year right after the school
year,” said Coach Wade
Knight. “It’s hard for our
boarding students to come
back in the summer since
they do not live in the local
area. Having the camp the
last week in May made it
possible for the team to stay
together and get more
experience”
“We played a lot of
basketball in a short amount
of time,” Knight continued.
“Playing other schools gave
the players the chance to have
real-time experience against
other teams. The more
experience a team has, the
more likely they’ll play as a
unit.”
Later in the summer, St.
Bernard will sponsor a Boys’
and Girls’ Basketball
Fundamental Camp for young
people in grades 4th through
8th. This camp will be help
July 16-19. This camp will
concentrate on developing
good basic skills on the
basketball court. The boys
will meet from 8:00 am till
11:30 am and the girls will
meet from 1:00 pm till 4:40
pm.

St. Bernard Alumni Reunion Weekend fun
Numerous stories were told of campus
antics and dorm escapades.
An informational town hall meeting
took place in the Brahma Room of the
school, delivered by Fr. Marcus Voss
and Abbot Cletus Meagher. Attendees
were thanked for their loyal support and
told about all the accomplishments St.
Bernard students have achieved in the
past year, as well as the progress the
Abbey has made in capital
improvements. Abbot Cletus announced
the launch of The Clairvaux Society, a
planned estate gift program, and invited
alumni to participate. A pasta bar lunch
was provided in the Dining Hall, again
hosted by Chef Andy. Many alumni
took the opportunity on Saturday
afternoon to attend the Vigil Mass held
in the Abbey Church.
An unexpected highlight of the
Saturday afternoon mass was the renewal
of wedding vows by Bob (class of 1958)
and Peggy Stewart, currently of
Haymarket, VA. Bob and Peggy were
actually celebrating their 50th wedding
anniversary that very same day, and at
the suggestion of Fr. Marcus Voss, OSB,
renewed their pledges during the Vigil
Mass, with Abbot Cletus Meagher, OSB,
officiating.
The culmination of the reunion was
held on Saturday evening with a dinner
of Beef Wellington. Alumni and guests
were served by current students and
Bob “Stewart” and
Peggy Keighery
junior monks of St. Bernard. Gorgeous
table decorations of silver and black,
provided by Cathy Grey and family, set
the stage for this special evening,
honoring the classes of 1942, 1947,
1952, 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977,
1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, and 2007. St.
Bernard has operated, in their 121-year
history, a college, a junior college, a
seminary, a high school, and a
preparatory school at various times
throughout these years. The prep school
class of 2002 opened their time capsule,
revealing old pictures, posters, class
assignments, and other memorabilia; the
capsule was resealed with additional
items, to be opened at a future reunion in
2027.
A member of the college class of
1973, Ron Rooks, proudly shared his
recent induction to the Cherokee County
Sports Hall of Fame by showing Fr.
Marcus Voss his award; Ron was given a
4-yr. basketball scholarship to St.
Bernard, and was proud to say that he
was “the first black athlete to be
recruited by Coach Charlie.” (See photo
page 18).
Guests were entertained by a slide
show of pictures taken during this year’s
reunion, as well as a special tribute slide
show to the classes of 1971-1974,
created by alumnus John J. King, college
class of 1973. A silent auction, hosted
by Joyce Nix, provided further
entertainment in addition to music and
dancing, courtesy of Universal Sound
DJ.
Sunday morning found many alumni
embracing and making promises to
“meet again next year.” An Omelet bar
was presented in the Dining Hall with
Chef Andy manning the griddle,
followed by mass with the monastic
community in the St. Bernard Abbey
Church.
Fr. Marcus Voss, Director of
Development at St. Bernard said, “I
always look forward to this weekend. It
is a great time to have our alumni back
on campus, to visit with them and have
them reconnect with their Alma Mater.”
(See pages 18-19 for more pictures of
the St. Bernard Alumni Reunion).
Jeff Gilsinger (SBCʼ67) tried
to make the alumni reunion,
but experienced car trouble in
the middle of his journey.
Seven days later, he made it to

Abbey Columbarium plans moving forward
The challenge has been issued . . . is there any alumnus out there who
can top John Terry Sweeney’s record of having attended 25 (yes, that’s
TWENTY-FIVE!) consecutive St. Bernard Alumni Reunions?!
Terry and his wife, Wilda, made this year’s reunion a family affair by
including their four grandchildren. Terry, a St. Bernard High School
alumnus of 1955 and a St. Bernard Jr. College alumnus of 1957, said that
he started coming to the reunions in 1987 when a special recognition was
given for Fr. Luke Fazi. “I haven’t missed one since, and now that my
grandkids have seen the campus, they want to come back with me next
year!”
The next Alumni Reunion is already scheduled for June 28-30, 2013.
Make your plans now to attend, bring your family, and set your sights on
Terry’s record.

completed, returned to, and approved by
Saint Bernard Abbey, and when payment
of the cost is received. The current preconstruction cost per niche, which holds
the cremains of up to two people, is
$2,600, but this price is good only through
the end of this year. The regular cost of
$3,000 for a 12”x12”x16” niche will be
effective as of January 2013. The cost
includes the right of inurnment of one or
two urns, and the ongoing maintenance
and upkeep of the columbarium. It does
not include additional expenses incurred
by funeral home, cremation, urn costs,
engraving of the niche face plate, or any
other funeral costs.
Many years ago, the Vatican lifted the
prohibition that forbade Catholics to
choose cremation, and now promotes the
philosophy that the ashes be treated with
the same respect given to the corporeal
remains of a human body—burial or
entombment. Saint Bernard Abbey
Cemetery Chapel Columbarium will
provide such a place, allowing family
members a beautiful, peaceful, and
tranquil setting in which to celebrate the
life of the deceased.

alumni, friends and benefactors of St.
Bernard; this interest was consolidated
into a plan of action by a member of the
class of 1963, Frank LaRussa. Frank
distributed a proposal in the summer of
2011 and conducted a survey to determine
feasibility of this project. The next step,
guided by the Abbey community and staff,
was the extensive research into the legal

creating and approving several necessary
documents—including Operating Policies,
a Right of Inurnment Agreement, and
most importantly, an Application for

St. Bernard celebrated a busy
weekend recently at their annual alumni
reunion. Activities began on Thursday
evening when golfers and friends
gathered in the Garden Room at Ave
Maria Grotto for a golf reception.
Individual golfers received their team
assignments and had the opportunity to
meet other players. Traditionally, teams
“bid on a monk” at this reception, raising
funds for the school by vying for the best
golfers among the monks of St. Bernard.
Fr. Jacob Amos, OSB, served as director
of the tournament and was very pleased
with the number of golfers participating.
Eighty golfers took to the greens at
Cullman Municipal Golf Course to
participate in the St. Bernard and
Cullman Dodge Open Golf Tournament
on Friday, June 22. Over $1,750 in cash
and prizes were awarded to the winning
teams.
“To do a tournament of this size
requires much work and detail,” Fr.
Jacob said. “It’s a huge undertaking, but
we had some great sponsors and
volunteers who made it all come
together.”
A delicious lunch of barbeque
chicken and ribs, potato salad, baked
beans and banana pudding was served
under the tent where awards were
presented.
Festivities continued for reunion
participants on Friday evening with a
fiesta party held in the Fazi-Richard
Athletic Center. Classmates and their
families renewed acquaintances while
feasting on a Mexican-themed dinner
provided by Buena Vista restaurant of
Cullman.
On Saturday morning, guests were
treated to a Waffle Bar in the school
Dining Hall, presented by Chef Andy
and crew. Alumni and families strolled
around the campus to get reacquainted
with their alma mater and to revisit
favorite school haunts. Many former
students were found in the
Administration building, looking at the
class photos, which date back to 1928.
