THEME: BALIKBAYAN: THE WAY HOME
The theme for this year‘s show is “Balikbayan: The Way Home”. The technical meaning of
balikbayan is a Filipino overseas worker, or a former Filipino citizen and his or her family who had
been naturalized in a foreign country and comes or returns to the Philippines“. Our interpretation
of balikbayan in regards to our show and storyline is a Filipino returning to his or her home”. Home
can mean multiple things for people. It could mean a physical place but in this case, home is where
family is.
In the storyline, a Filipino family in the Philippines is separated once the mother makes the
tough decision to go to America to support her family financially. Part of the family stays in the
Philippines while the other part of the family travels to the United States. The family promises to
keep in touch via letters they send in the Balikbayan boxes until they are reunited again in the
United States. Throughout their journey, we see despite the barriers of physical distance and living
in different cultural settings family bonds remain strong.
FCN COORDINATORS
Zac Cacal
Zac(h) Cacal is a Junior at the University of Illinois. After transferring from
Actuarial Science to Atmospheric Sciences this semester, he is looking to
graduate from UIUC and possibly attend grad school in hopes to unlock
his potential in his new major. When he’s not planning for FCN, he can
usually be found studying hard as a student, hanging out with his friends
and AKAs, or catching up with shows on Netflix. After watching the 1st
FCN in 2013 and being a part of the 2nd FCN the year after, he took on the
duty of co-coordinating FCN 2015! After months and months of hard work,
planning and dedication, he can’t wait to see this whole event unfold. He
would like to thank all his friends and family and the PSA Officer Board for
all their support. He would also like to thank his partner, Audrey, and the
FCN Committee for all of their effort and dedication to the show and dinner.
He seriously couldn’t have done this without all of you! And to all of you
attending, I hope you enjoy it and really take something out of it!
Audrey Gomez
Audrey Gomez is currently a bioengineering major at UIUC specializing in therapeutics. She is
working on getting her bachelor’s degree in bioengineering while working as a research assistant
in Dr. Imoukhuede’s lab. She looks forward to a future career in the medical field but also enjoy her
time being involved in various organizations on campus such as PSA and TASC. Despite being often
busy with activities and school, she enjoys jamming and harmonizing in her free time and attempting
to cook at home. What she is most excited for FCN is finally seeing the final product of what she,
her co-coordinator and FCN Committee have worked on since last summer. Thank you to Zac, FCN
Committee and the PSA Officer Board for being there and supporting the show!

FINANCIAL DIRECTORS
Jamie Auza
Jamie Auza is a sophomore in DGS at U of I and one of the Co-Financial Director for FCN.
She has performed cultural dances in Filipino Club in her high school as well as more modern
Korean influenced groups outside of school. Jamie is one of the many talented choreographers
participating in this year’s FCN along with her before-anyone-else, Jess Bautista. Her hopes
and dreams include swimming in a pool of jell-o, eating a whole cake in one sitting, and holding
a lion cub. She has an obsession with them. If you know anyone that can arrange that for her,
find her immediately. Other than that, Jamie
also obsesses about dancing. She’s not that
experienced but she is excited to share dances
that she, her partner and all of the other dancers
and choreographers have worked hard to bring to
the stage.
Gerard Pineda
FCN Financial Director by day, and caped
crusader by night. World renowned Gerard Pineda
is a Senior in Molecular and Cellular Biology
with a minor in Bear Fighting. His post-graduation plans involve research and development at
a pharmaceutical company while pursuing his hobby of extreme basket weaving. Much like
insomnia and sarcasm, FCN has been a big part of his college years. He’s very excited for the
show and hopes readers like yourself will enjoy our performance and dinner. As a personal
message to his friends in the committee, he would like them to know that they were “alright, I
guess”.
PERFORMANCE DIRECTOR
Rick Tuvilla
Rick Tuvilla is a senior in Technical Systems Management here
at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He was the
cultural coordination, with his partner Neil Miran, his sophomore
year and led PSA’s cultural dance group, BARKADA, to a
first place finish at the Battle of the Bamboo 2012. Another
accomplishment of his is that he is currently taken by the
beautiful MyHanh Bui. His life goals include the following: get
money, pay debt, travel the world, have a family (i want twins),
and live life to the fullest. The thing that I am most excited for is
for our dancers to get the feeling of satisfaction of performing in
front of a huge audience and seeing their handwork pay off.

Adrianne Pearl Gimenez is a Sophomore in Marketing. She is
extremely excited for Filipino Culture Night. Adrianne is also the
current Philanthropy Chair for the Philipipne Student Association and
is focused on creating the first ever internal-tutoring program within

their Advertising Chairs. In her post-college future Adrianne dreams
of someday living in the south of France working for a non-profit
organization while running a small café on the side in which she holds
open mic nights and sings. For FCN Adrianne is most excited for
working with Advancement for Rural Kids in their mission to improve
schooling in rural Philippines.
Christina Malibiran is a junior majoring in Cinema Studies in the University
of Illinois At Urbana Champaign. Even though her major is focused on film,
she grew interest in Advertising and hopes to get a successful career in the

Cultural Runway:
CULTURAL SCENES:
Choreographed by: Maria Climaco and Chelsea Tuvilla
Filipino cultural dances are classified into five distinct suites: Maria Clara,
Mountain, Tribal, Rural, and Muslim. Dances in the Maria Clara suite showcase
the merging of these two influences through the music, costume, and props like the
fan or bamboo castanets. The six tribes inhibiting the mountains of Northern
Luzon were unfazed by Spanish colonial rule and were able to preserve their
culture. Their dances reflect rituals to appease their ancestors and gods to cure
sickness, insure success during wars and crop seasons, as well as to ward off bad
luck. The Rural suite encompasses the Filipino’s spirit during fiestas and overall
love for life. Like the mountain tribes, Filipino Muslims were also able to resist
Spanish rule and preserve their culture. Muslim dances are characterized by vivid
colors and rhythmic movements which reflect its original influences. Dancing to
these tribes are a major part of life, and like the dances in the Mountain suite: are
done predominantly to please the gods.
Battle of the Bamboo:
Habanera Botolena:
Choreographed by: Daphne Agustin
This dance originated from Botolan, Zambales and is a combination
of Spanish and Philippine steps with flamenco influence. This is a
sometimes popular dance in the North among the Ilocanos. It is a
courtship dance but sometime it is also performed during weddings
and other social gatherings.
Senior Tinikling:
Choreographed by: Daphne Agustin and Neil Miran
Tinikling is a dance originating from the Rural Suite, where the
dancers have to skillfully, quickly, and gracefully dance through
clicking bamboo sticks. This dance was meant to imitate the Tikling
birds as they evaded the bamboo traps set by farmers. It is also the
national dance of the Philippines.
Choreographed by: Reed Cabral and Hai Pham
This year is the 12th annual Battle of the Bamboo. Since 2002, Battle of the Bamboo has annually celebrated the Filipino culture. This
Filipino Cultural Dance competition opens the stage to colleges and high schools to showcase themselves to Chicago and, more generally, to the Midwest.
This year PSA UIUC has chosen a muslim dance depicting the story of a royal family in the Philippines that embarks on a journey to rescue their son
from the Angel of Death.
The story starts off in the Kingdom of Bumbaran, King Bumbaran lead this kingdom, which was prosperous and full of good people.
HOWEVER, the king himself was not happy, His younger brother, Prince Bantugan, was always praised by the people of the kingdom. Often praised as
handsome and had many ladies offer their hands to him, the king grew jealous.
One day, enemies attacked, and Prince Bantugan lead his army of men off to fight off the invasion. While he was away, the King of Bumbaran
devised a devious plot. He issued a proclamation that no one shall speak or show affection to Prince Bantugan upon his return.
Upon Prince Bantugan’s return, everyone followed the proclamation. He was saddened and decided to leave his country, as he knew that his brother hated
him, and would rather travel than live in misery. He decided to travel to the King-between-two-Seas.
Prince Bantugan had to travel through various terrains, such as the mountains, forests, and rivers. When he finally arrived to the Kingdombetween-two-Seas, he collapsed and died in front of the Kingdom’s gate due to the extreme weariness he felt from the intense journey.
The King of the Kingdom-between-two-Seas heard of a stranger dying in front of his gate, and decided to go look upon the body to see who it was.
His sister, Prince Datimbang, went with him to examine the body. There they saw a handsome young man, dressed in clothes for royalty. Princess
Datimbang fell in love at first sight. The King asked his people if anyone knew who he was, but no one in the Kingdom had any idea. The King then
ordered the body to be taken away with special care, afraid that the body was related to royalty.
In another part of the Kingdom, parrots were talking about the Prince who died in the Kingdom-between-two-Seas. The Prince Bantugan’s
Parrot was among these parrots, and fell silent as they talked about this. The other parrots noticed, and asked what was wrong, Prince Bantugan’s Parrot
told them of his lost owner, and they told Prince Bantugan’s Parrot that he could go see his master at the Palace of the Kingdom-between-two-Seas.
Prince Bantugan’s Parrot flew straight there and saw his body, weeping for his deceased owner. The Princess and King overheard his weeping and found
out about the body’s origin. The King decided to bring the body back to the Kingdom of Bumbaran with his Vinta.
Once they arrived to the Kingom of Bumbaran, the body was presented and everyone weeped for Prince Bantugan. The King felt terrible for driving his
brother to death. Prince Madali and Prince Mabaning, Prince Bantugan’s brothers, offered to retrieve his brother’s soul from the land of the dead.
The two rode on their magical shields up to the land of the dead, which was past the land of thunder and endless rain. There, they got past the
gate keeper and met with the Angel of Death.
They tricked the Angel of Death to leave the room through the seduction of Prince Mabaning dressing as a girl. With the Angel Distracted,
Madali went and searched for his brother, finding his soul in a huge blue bottle. He took the bottle and left with Mabaning to return his brother’s soul.
Prince Bantugan awoke, as if from a deep slumber. Everyone was happy and they celebrated for days, which later lead to the celebration of his
marriage to Princess Datimbang.
