Salary Increments
Salary increments are payable subject to satisfactory performance which is verified by the Head of
Unit. While increments are normally payable annually, under the Haddington Road Agreement (HRA)
a deferral period applies. The deferral period is determined by salary, the details of which are
outlined below.
Research Staff
Increments for research staff are subject to satisfactory performance and available research funding.
The increment deferral provision of the Haddington Road Agreement apply to all public sector staff
and therefore applies to research staff employed by DCU.
Haddington Road Agreement – Increment Deferral Provision
The Haddington Road Agreement (HRA) stipulates a deferral period for increments, determined by
salary level. Deferrals are only applicable after the next increment due (following the introduction of
the HRA) is paid. A summary of the deferral period applicable is outlined in the following table:

Working example – THE HRA was implemented on 1 July 2013. Therefore if a staff member on a
salary of €40,000 was due an increment on 1 December 2013 it was paid as normal. The following
increment would have a 3 month deferral period applied and therefore the increment would be
payable on 1 March 2015. The subsequent increment would also have a three month deferral period
and therefore would be payable on 1 June 2016.
Salaries scales starting at over €100,000 (Professor) will have incremental progression suspended for
the lifetime of the HRA.
Allowances – Fixed pensionable allowances are included in calculating the overall salary amount.
Non-pensionable acting allowances are not counted in the salary calculation.
