your scores.
Scores are due Thursday, December 22, 2011.
No exceptions!
Note: the writing portion of the SAT or ACT is
not used for admission or placement purposes.
The eligibility index is a weighted combination of high school
grade point average during the final three years of high school
and a score on either the SAT or ACT. To make a preliminary
admission decision, all grades earned in “a-g” courses taken
in 10th through 11th grades are used to calculate the high
school grade point average (GPA).
Graduates of California high schools or residents of California,
as defined for tuition purposes, must have a minimum
eligibility index of 2900 using the SAT or 694 using the ACT.
Nonresidents who are not graduates of a California high
school must have a minimum index of 3502 using the SAT or
842 using the ACT.
Note: For consideration for some impacted majors, SJSU
requires a higher minimum eligibility index.
The CSU eligibility index is calculated by using either the
SAT or ACT as follows:
SAT (scores in mathematics and critical reading)
+ (800 x GPA)
– or –
(10 x ACT composite score without the writing score)
+ (200 x GPA)

IMPACTION: SJSU receives applications from more eligible students than
there is space for, thus meeting the minimum requirements may not be enough
to gain you admission to SJSU. The eligibility index is the minimum
standard for consideration.
Choice of major and application review
SJSU is an impacted campus, therefore eligibility for admission is based on self reported
information that you provide us at the time of application and is subject to verification by your
final high school transcript.
1. Minimum CSU eligibility standards
2. Location of the applicant’s high school
3. Applicant’s choice of major
Applicants should carefully select their intended majors. Change of major during the
application process is prohibited.
FROSH ADMISSION PROCESS

You must remain fully engaged in your application process or you will risk losing your space
in the incoming class of 2012. Before you apply, understand that you will be required to
successfully complete multiple steps in order to enroll at SJSU.

too late for us to help you. Watch out! Other colleges, even in the CSU, have different
processes and deadlines.
If offered admission to SJSU, you must commit your intent to enroll by May 1, 2012.

Have a back-up plan!
Applicants to SJSU should apply at an alternate campus that offers your desired major.
Choice of major is never guaranteed, even after admission and enrollment at SJSU.
“Local” and “non-local” students
Local applicants are students who will graduate from a Santa Clara county high school.
Local applicants are guaranteed admission provided they apply by 11:59 PST on
November 30, 2011, comply with all posted deadlines and meet CSU eligibility requirements.
CSU-eligibile local applicants who are not accommodated in their preferred majors will be
offered admission as Undeclared majors.
Non-local applicants are students who will graduate from a high school located outside of
Santa Clara county.
Admission is offered to non-local applicants based on the overall space available in their major.
On-campus Housing Requirement
Non-residents of California and international applicants must meet a higher minimum
standard, regardless of major. See info.sjsu.edu for details.
All admitted first-time freshmen who graduate from a high school located in a city outside a
30 mile radius of SJSU will be required to live on campus for their first year. A housing
application and non-refundable $50 fee are due on May 1, 2012. See page 10 for details.
Early Start Program
Under Early Start, beginning in 2012, entering freshmen not proficient in math and/or
determined to be “at risk” in English will need to start the remediation process in the summer
before their first term or risk having their admission withdrawn. Students will be notified
throughout the process of application, admission, enrollment and registration about this
requirement. In most cases, admissions decisions are made by February giving students
several months to choose from the menu of Early Start options for them to fulfill this requirement
prior to starting their college courses in the fall.
The process to determine who will be required to complete Early Start includes placement tests
in English and math taken well in advance of frosh orientation. Unless exempt, admitted frosh will
be required to complete placement tests in English and math by April 30, 2012.
SJSU’s Early Start plans include such options as courses offered in the summer at SJSU, at one
of our local community colleges, or at another CSU campus.
Attend Frosh Orientation
Orientation is mandatory at SJSU. Make this a priority for next summer. Note that there will
be a non-refundable fee to attend.
Maintain Your Eligibility
We will scrutinize your final high school transcript to make sure you maintained your
eligibility through the remainder of your senior year. You may not use Summer 2012 to make
up requirements.
Mandatory Placement Tests in English and Math
Unless exempt, you must take placement tests in English and math before April 30, 2012.
If you participated in the Early Assessment Program (EAP) you may need to take some
additional course work during your senior year in order to be exempt from the ELM.

Transfer
You will be eligible to be reviewed for admission by SJSU if you meet the following criteria:
You are an upper
division transfer
You meet the following criteria
No lower division transfer
and no second baccalaureate
applications will be accepted.
m
Complete 60 or more transferable semester units or 90 or more quarter units
m
Earn a college grade point average of 2.00 (2.40 for non-residents) or better
in all transferable courses
m
Be in good standing at the last college or university attended
m
Complete 30 semester units (45 quarter units) of general education,
including four basic skills courses:
1.
2.
3.
4.
One course in oral communication
One course in written composition
One course in critical thinking
One course in mathematics or quantitative reasoning, with intermediate algebra as a
prerequisite
For fall admission: The four basic skills courses and minimum of 60 transferable semester units
(90 quarter units) must be completed by the spring semester prior to fall admission.
Earn a “C” or better grade in each basic skills course
Check out SJSU’s excellent
transfer planning website at
http://transfer.sjsu.edu
We have agreements with nearly
150 California colleges and universities.
Complete your four basic skills as early as possible. Bottom line: you can’t register until we have
a transcript showing passing grades for the four basic skills.
Transfer Associate Degree
A California Community College student who has earned the Associate in Arts degree for Transfer (AA-T) or
the Associate in Science degree for Transfer (AS-T) will be granted priority admission to the CSU into a similar
baccalaureate degree program with a guarantee of junior standing as long as the student meets all prescribed
admission requirements. Once admitted, the student will only be required to complete 60 additional prescribed
units to qualify for the similar baccalaureate degree for majors requiring 120 semester units.
The AA-T or AS-T degree does not guarantee a student admission for a specified major or campus, but requires
the California State University to grant a student priority admission consideration to the local CSU campus
and to a program or major that is similar to the transfer Associate degree as determined by the California State
University.
For more information, see www.sb1440.org or your California Community College Transfer Center.

How to Apply
Start the application process early!
Apply to SJSU at
www.csumentor.edu
SJSU is impacted for undergraduate applicants and will close at
the end of the application period. Late applications will not
be accepted.
Fall 2012 Semester:
Saturday, October 1 – Wednesday, November 30, 2011
PLAN AHEAD! THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THE NOVEMBER 30 DEADLINE.
You will receive an application confirmation number that is your receipt.
Keep this number in a safe place, as you will use it to activate your MySJSU
account.
5 – 7 business days after applying
at CSUMentor
Go to
https://futurestudent.sjsu.edu
Use your CSUMentor application confirmation number to access this
site and retrieve your SJSU ID and temporary password, both of which are
used to access San José State’s MySJSU student information portal.
SJSU will assign you a student identification number. This 9-digit number
will be your SJSU identification throughout your college career. Losing this
number is a hassle, so put it in a safe, but obvious place. You will need your
Student ID number to check the status of your application at MySJSU.
EOP applicants
CSUMentor is where you apply for the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).
If you meet the criteria, plan on applying for EOP when you submit your
admissions application. See “Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)” on
page 11 for more information.
Use your full, legal name consistently on every application and document
you submit. This includes financial aid documents, transcripts and test scores.
After you apply, also include your SJSU-assigned ID number. We match
documents to your file by matching your name and ID number.
Choose your major carefully!
Apply for a major in which you intend to earn a degree.
After admission, your mandatory orientation, advising and registration
will be based on your choice of major.
Change of major is prohibited during the application and admission process.
Change of major is never guaranteed and is by petition only.
Have a back-up plan!
Applicants to SJSU should apply at an alternate campus that offers
the desired major. Choice of major is never guaranteed, even after
admission and enrollment at SJSU.

Activate your MySJSU account
at http://my.sjsu.edu
Check your MySJSU account
frequently for messages
SJSU communicates almost entirely by messages and ‘to-do’ items
posted to your MySJSU account.
Check your my.sjsu.edu account at least once a week or you will
miss out on important and timely notices, such as admission, fee,
financial aid, enrollment appointment, test and transcript information.
When you log in to your MySJSU account for the first time, change
your password to something you will remember, and set up the
“forgot password” feature for your MySJSU account:
MySJSU menu on left side > Password help >
Change or set up forgotten password help
Make sure your personal information is up to date –
your email address is critical!
Confirm your email address and update if necessary. Be sure to set your
filters to accept messages from the @sjsu.edu domain.
Your ‘student center’ is your portal to your enrollment appointment as
well. To-do lists are used by admissions, records and financial aid to
help you keep track of items you must provide the university.
You are responsible for monitoring your progress at
MySJSU and you must take action by posted deadlines!
Failure to do so may result in your application or admission
being withdrawn.
Lost SJSU ID or password?
If you lose your SJSU ID or password after you log-in for the first time,
you must contact the CMS Help Desk via cmshelp@sjsu.edu with your full
name, your SJSU ID, your postal address and date of birth for assistance.
You will also need to confirm the email address on file with MySJSU.
Generally, requests to reset can take up to 2 business depending upon
email volume.
You are responsible for providing complete, accurate and timely information!
If you allow a parent, guardian, family member or other person to fill out the application,
you are still accountable and responsible for meeting all requests for information and associated deadlines.

On-Campus Housing Options
Housing Requirements
All students are highly encouraged to live on campus at least two years while studying at the
university. National studies indicate that students who live on campus are more likely to graduate
than commuter students. In addition, on-campus residents participate in more extra-curricular
activities and engage in more interactions with faculty and other students.
Students and their families appreciate that living on campus means freedom from frustrating
commutes, costly utility bills, and daily meal preparation. Residence hall rooms are furnished and
provide a number of amenities to make your on-campus living experience a positive one.
The sooner you submit your complete license agreement and $600 initial payment, the greater
your chance of receiving your hall preference.
You are a graduate from a high school in one of the following cities located within
a 30 mile radius of 95192
All frosh are encouraged to live on campus. However, if you graduate from a high school in one

Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)
The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to assist students who are historically
disadvantaged because of their economic and educational backgrounds. EOP serves California
residents who meet stated admissions requirements, as well as those who may not qualify
for regular admission but who demonstrate potential to succeed at the university level. EOP
applicants must meet low-income guidelines as designated in the EOP section of CSUMentor
and must show need of financial and academic assistance.
The EOP process has three parts:
1. Apply for admission to SJSU via www.csumentor.edu. If you wish to be considered as an
EOP applicant, check the EOP box on the CSUMentor application.
2. Complete the online EOP application located on CSUMentor. The deadline to submit a
completed Applicant Information Form and two Recommendation Forms is Wednesday,
February 1, 2012.
3. You must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by
Friday, March 2, 2012 to qualify for consideration to EOP.
If you are admitted to SJSU and you also qualify for EOP, you will receive additional support
services from the university.

In-state tuition for certain non-residents (AB 540 provisions)
If you attended high school in California for at least three full years and graduated or earned an equivalent, you may
be eligible for resident tuition. Students must file an affidavit with the SJSU campus stating that they have filed an
application with Immigration to legalize their immigration status or will do so as soon as they are eligible. Download the
affidavit at www.sjsu.edu/registrar/forms/index.htm. You will need to show proof of attendance and graduation.

Financial Aid Applicants
The cost of college should not discourage students from applying to SJSU. Financial Aid is
assistance offered to you and your family to help meet the gap between what you can contribute
to your education and what it costs to attend college. Financial aid can be in the form of federal
grants, state grants, work-study, scholarships and loans.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for financial aid at SJSU.
The FAFSA will be available at www.fafsa.ed.gov by Sunday, January 1, 2012.
You should apply by the Friday, March 2, 2012 priority filing deadline for the upcoming Fall 2012
semester. Applications are still accepted after the March 2 date; however, many aid programs
award funds based on this deadline. SJSU uses a “need-blind” admission policy and does not
base admission to the university on the student’s ability to pay.
The FAFSA form asks for SJSU’s six-digit code, which is 001155. Students who apply for
financial aid through the FAFSA will view a personalized Student Aid Report online. Students
print this report for their records. The campus financial aid office will then contact you to
complete your file and will determine your financial aid eligibility. It takes about two weeks to
respond to your initial application and three to four months to complete the entire process.
FOR DETAILS, SEE WWW.SJSU.EDU/FASO
The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published schedules
or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU
must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or modify any listed fees,
without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun.
All CSU listed fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by
The Board of Trustees.
