Compute Your GPA for the CSU
You meet or exceed the
minimum eligibility index
STEP 1
Graduates of California high schools or residents of California,
as defined for tuition purposes, must have a minimum
eligibility index of 2900 using the SAT or 694 using the ACT.
Nonresidents who are not graduates of a California high
school must have a minimum index of 3502 using the SAT
or 842 using the ACT.
Note: For consideration for some impacted majors,
SJSU requires a minimum eligibility index of 3200 using the
SAT or 760 using the ACT. See degree pages 6-7 for list.
The CSU eligibility index is calculated by using either the
SAT or ACT as follows:
SAT (scores in mathematics and critical reading)
+ (800 x GPA)
– or –
(10 x ACT composite score without the writing score)
+ (200 x GPA)

requirements.
Fill in the number of semester courses you have taken
next to the grade you have earned.
All grades earned in “a-g” courses taken in 10th through 11th
grades are used to calculate the grade point average (GPA).
Summer school courses count, including the summer
between 9th and 10th grades, and excluding the summer after
12th grade.
Repeated courses must be exact same course – use only
the highest grade.
Honors courses taken in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades
(maximum of 8 semesters, of which there is a maximum of
two in the 10th grade) receive one additional grade point for
each A, B or C grade.
STEP 2
Multiply the number of courses by the grade points per
grade to get the total grade points.
Grade Received
The eligibility index is a weighted combination of high school
grade point average during the final three years of high school
and a score on either the SAT or ACT. To make a preliminary
admission decision, all grades earned in “a-g” courses taken
in 10th through 11th grades are used to calculate the high
school grade point average (GPA).

The Residential Community is home to more than 3,500 students, faculty and staff.
It includes residence halls and suites that offer First Year Experience programming; an
apartment building for upper division students, and a faculty/staff/graduate apartment
building.
SJSU is considering using on-campus housing as a factor in the enrollment process.
See http://info.sjsu.edu > Admission for updates.
The Apartments
The Apartments community is a high-rise apartment building that offers upper division
students a variety of independent living options: studios and three-, four- and five-bedroom
apartments.

and is open to freshman and upper division students.
Students may also choose to live in the Classics community, our traditional residence halls.
The three Classic buildings are affectionately known as the “bricks” for their uniform red
brick architecture. Each hall is three stories high and divided into six wings of approximately
forty-five students.
Joe West Hall, is a twelve-story high-rise residence hall home to 600 students.
Double occupancy room and board, basic meal plan .................$8,557.00*
*Average 10-month costs. All rates are approximate and subject to change. Rents include furniture, basic utilities,
internet, cable and phone service. Meal costs are an basic; final rate will vary depending on meal plan chosen. A
$50.00 application fee and a $20.00 per semester activity fee will also be charged to all rents.
Disability Accommodations
If you have specific needs regarding accommodations, please contact University Housing
Services at 408-924-6160 or info@housing.sjsu.edu.
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) can assist while working with Housing to ensure that
students with disabilities have appropriate accommodations. Contact DRC at 408-9246000 (voice), 408-924-5990 (TTY) or info@drc.sjsu.edu.
Apply for Housing
Applications for campus housing are accepted at anytime during the year! Studies show
that students who live on campus earn higher GPAs, graduate at higher rates, and have
a higher level of satisfaction with their overall college experience! Living on campus
provides greater access to getting involved with student organizations, and eases your
ability to become part of the SJSU community. In addition, you’ll enjoy the convenience
of being close to your peers, instructors and on campus resources. Whether you
currently live locally or will be coming from out of the area, all students can benefit from
living on campus and enhancing your ability for success.
Go to https://apply.housing.sjsu.edu/ to begin the application process. For more
information, including application materials, visit www.housing.sjsu.edu.

Non-residents of California
In addition to all mandatory state and local fees, non-residents pay $372.00 per semester unit.
In-state tuition for certain non-residents (AB 540 provisions)
If you attended high school in California for at least three full years and graduated or earned an equivalent, you may
be eligible for resident tuition. Students must file an affidavit with the SJSU campus stating that they have filed an
application with Immigration to legalize their immigration status or will do so as soon as they are eligible. Download the
affidavit at www.sjsu.edu/registrar/forms/index.htm. You will need to show proof of attendance and graduation.
The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Fees listed in published
schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate.
Therefore, CSU must reserve the right, even after initial fee payments are made, to increase or
modify any listed fees, without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or
quarter has begun. All CSU listed fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change
upon approval by The Board of Trustees.
FOR DETAILS, SEE WWW.SJSU.EDU/BURSAR
If required, you must take placement tests before attending orientation. By taking these
tests early, you will be able to attend an earlier orientation and have access to better course
selection.
If you participated in the Early Assessment Program (EAP) and received a conditional
exemption you may need to take some supplemental coursework while you are enrolled in
high school. For details, see http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/static/soc-fall/tests.html
Writing Skills Test for Transfers
The Writing Skills Test (WST) is required of all upper division students and is prerequisite
for enrolling in all SJSU Studies General Education courses. Students must earn a “C” or
better grade in English 001B prior to registering for the WST and enrolling in 100W. A “C-”
grade is not acceptable.
Generally two WST dates are offered in the spring, two in the summer, and two in the fall.
Go to https://testing.sjsu.edu for exact dates.
It is strongly recommended that students take the WST prior to registering for their first
semester. Failing to pass the exam in a timely fashion may delay graduation. For details, see
http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/static/soc-fall/tests.html
Financial Aid Applicants
Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)
The cost of college should not discourage students from applying to SJSU. Financial Aid
is assistance offered to you and your family to help meet the gap between what you can
contribute to your education and what it costs to attend college. Financial aid can be in the
form of federal grants, state grants, work-study, scholarships and loans.
The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to assist students who are
historically disadvantaged because of their economic and educational backgrounds. EOP
serves California residents who meet stated admissions requirements, as well as those
who may not qualify for regular admission but who demonstrate potential to succeed at the
university level. EOP applicants must meet low-income guidelines as designated in the EOP
section of CSUMentor and must show need of financial and academic assistance.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for financial aid at
SJSU. The FAFSA will be available at www.fafsa.ed.gov by January 2010.
You should apply by the Tuesday, March 2, 2010 priority filing deadline for the upcoming
Fall 2010 semester. Applications are still accepted after the March 2 date; however, many
aid programs award funds based on this deadline. SJSU uses a “need-blind” admission
policy and does not base admission to the university on the student’s ability to pay.
1. Apply for admission to SJSU via www.csumentor.edu. If you wish to be considered as an
EOP applicant, check the EOP box on the CSUMentor application.
2. Complete the online EOP application located on the CSUMentor website.
3. You must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to qualify for
consideration to EOP.
If you are admitted to SJSU and you also qualify for EOP, you will receive additional support
services from the university.
For details, see www.sjsu.edu/eop.

What Next?
The FAFSA form asks for SJSU’s six-digit code, which is 001155. Students who apply
for financial aid through the FAFSA will view a personalized Student Aid Report online.
Students print this report for their records. The campus financial aid office will then contact
you to complete your file and will determine your financial aid eligibility. It takes about
two weeks to respond to your initial application and three to four months to complete the
entire process.
