Using clay and sculpting techniques,
you can interpret a masterwork in a
relief sculpture.

Objective: to re-create a 2-dimensional painting into 3-dimensional relief sculpture
using modeling techniques of deep and shallow relief.
Process:
Maquette from a postcard
Choose a masterwork. Photocopy final choice for your SKB
In your SKB, record credit line information on the piece you have chosen
Draw a grid over the photocopy to help you with scale and proportion
SKB:
Find examples of other relief sculpture: due __________________________
5 examples min, include credit line information. Choose examples from different
times in history to present.
Arrange them in chronological order
Include a few bits of information about each including, but not limited to, where it
is/was located
Prepare a Prezi on your artist – see handout. Due _______________________
In the studio, prepare a slab NLT A4 size, NST ½ A4 size
Use carving and modeling (carve and build up the clay) techniques to create relief
on the entire surface of the tile
Paint the tile once it is fired as close to the original painting as possible
Write a reflection in your SKB include challenges, triumphs and a picture of the final
result.
