Message from the Chairperson
On behalf of the Board of Regents, congratulations to the Spring Class of 2014 on the
conferral of your degrees. Please remember that the University community shares the joy and
pride that you have brought to your family through your accomplishments. The hard work
and dedication that you have demonstrated to earn your degree will continue to reap future
benefits for you, your island, your nation and the world!
The goal of the University of Guam is to prepare graduates to contribute to the growth
and development of our island and our region through their chosen career fields. You will
represent to our community the qualities that can be found in all UOG students. It is through your efforts that
Guam will realize the value and necessity of growing the University to serve her people.
Thank you very much for choosing the University of Guam, the home of the big G. I wish each and every one of
you a joyous day as you celebrate your new beginning. Best wishes and God’s blessings to all of you.
William Leon Guerrero
Chairperson, Board of Regents
Message from the President
Congratulations to the Class of 2014! Your hard work has brought you to this day, a new
beginning and an opening to new opportunities. You have all faced the challenge of struggling
with multiple commitments and responsibilities, and have risen to the occasion. I hope that
you will always remember the satisfaction you feel today at having earned your degree.
The University of Guam (UOG) is the only institution in the world that is wholly committed
to the needs of Guam and the Micronesian region. Throughout our island region, UOG
Tritons are helping to improve the quality of life for our people. In the face of competing
priorities, UOG’s goal is to be great in providing a quality education that prepares each graduate to lead and serve
our island and region.
Today we will listen to the wise words of a young leader from our region. Republic of Palau President Tommy
Remengesau’s personal examples demonstrates what visionary island leadership can accomplish. We will also
honor Candido Babauta Taman with a Master of Micronesian Traditional Knowledge. His contribution in song of
several languages as well as his public service represents the need to secure a 21st century future for our cultures
and languages.
As an alumnus, you will represent the quality of a UOG education wherever you are. I look forward to your
continued involvement as UOG continues to provide opportunities to future generations of Tritons.
Biba Class of 2014! Biba UOG!
Robert A. Underwood, Ed.D.

About Commencement
Academic Dress and Procession
The history of academic dress dates to the Middle
Ages when many scholars were also clerics and
wore costume of the monastic orders. In 1321, the
University of Cambridge adopted specific styles and
color combinations. American colleges and universities
desired to adopt a standard code for academic dress
for colleges and universities in the United States. The
standards continue to be followed by the American
Council of Education.
The costumes worn today are all traditional
and their colors, trimmings and patterns
interpret the degree, the field of learning,
and the institution that conferred the degree.
The bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves
and is designed to be worn closed; the
master’s gown has an oblong sleeves open at
the wrist. The rear part of its oblong shape
is square cut and the front part has an arc
cut away. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped

The academic procession is led by the grand marshal, who
is the President of the Faculty Senate. A traditional order
to procession is followed: First come the candidates for
degrees according to the order in which the
degrees are to be conferred; next, members
of the faculty led by the faculty marshal,
the honorary degree recipient and the other
members of the platform party followed by
the president of the university. The order is
reversed for the recessional.
You will note that some of today’s graduates
are wearing a gold stole. This stole indicates
that the wearer is graduating with academic
honors.

Commencement Address
His Excellency
President Tommy Remengesau, Jr.
President Tommy Esang Remengesau, Jr., the eighth President of the
Republic of Palau, is the first Palauan to be elected as President three
times. He was first elected as President in 2000 and was re-elected in 2004.
Constitutionally limited to two consecutive presidential terms, Remengesau
was elected in 2008 as a Senator in the Palau National Congress (the Olbiil
Era Kelulau) where he served until his election as President again in 2012.
President Tommy Remengesau, Jr.
Republic of Palau
His election as President again in 2012 is a mark of his vitality and his
commitment to his promise to the People of Palau to work hard to “preserve
the best, and improve the rest” for Palau, today and for generations to come.
During his time in public office, Palau has been recognized for its financial
stability and good governance. Remengesau also emphasized Palau’s
international leadership and close relationship with the United States at
the United Nations and on strategic matters. In 2007, Time magazine
named him one of the heroes of the environment for initiatives such as
the Micronesian Challenge. President Remengesau is now considering
establishing a marine sanctuary covering all of Palau’s waters, further
enhancing Palau’s tourism revenues.
Remengesau began his political career as the youngest Senator ever elected to the Olbiil Era Kelulau at the age
of 28. During his Senate terms, he served as Chairman of the powerful Committee on Ways and Means and
was instrumental in helping to erase Palau’s outstanding budget deficit and bring about financial stability and
credibility.
In 1992 Remengesau was elected Vice President of Palau, the youngest Palauan ever to serve in national office.
He was re-elected as Vice President in 1996. As Vice President, he concurrently held the position of Minister of
Administration (Finance) helping the Republic gain membership in the International Monetary Fund and the
World Bank Group. He also helped lead Palau’s transition to an independent country in 1994.
President Remengesau was born on February 28, 1956, in Koror, Palau. As the eldest of eight children born to
Mr. Thomas O. Remengesau, Sr., and Ferista Esang Remengesau, “Tommy” has followed his father’s distinguished
career which included serving 12 years as Palau’s first District Administrator, as the Minister of Justice, and as Vice
President and President. President Remengesau and his wife Debbie have four children and two grandchildren.

Candido Babauta Taman
Master of Micronesian Traditional Knowledge Honoris Causa
Candido Babauta Taman was born to Soledad Iguel Babauta (Sa’i) and Vicente
Olaitiman Taman on January 9, 1948. Like many Saipanese, he traces his genealogy
to both the late 19th century settlement of Chamorros from Guam (Sumay) and to
several 19th century migrations from Carolinian atolls surrounding Chuuk. His life
story is one of an individual who capitalized on a God-given aptitude for language and
music to become an effective and inspiring proponent of cultural revitalization in the
Marianas and throughout Micronesia.
Taman grew up in Saipan and was recognized for his extraordinary musical gifts
through his countless performances, singing and playing ukulele at school functions,
the church choir and community events. As a teen he sang popular American music
but he also learned more about traditional Chamorro and Carolinian music from
respected singers and songwriters including Benusto Kaipat and Tun Akin San Nicolas
(Katmelo).
At the age of sixteen, his elders gave him the Carolinian name “Soughulmwar,”
roughly translated by Taman as “twist things and put them in perspective.” The name

recognized his ability to use language with subtlety and tact when approaching delicate

issues. In 1976, amidst a resurgence in pride in traditional culture that accompanied
Knowledge Honoris Causa
Saipan’s transition from Trust Territory to Commonwealth, he employed his linguistic
and musical talents to write Chamorro and Carolinian songs in modern styles. Lyrics he wrote for his late 1970s bands
Tropicsette and Chamolinian addressed tensions within the Northern Marianas and promoted a syncretic “Chamolinian”
identity in which all Northern Marianas islanders could take pride.
On Guam, Taman is best known for his impact on 1980s Chamorro music with songs like “Patgon Nene,” “Pau Asu
Amerikanu” and “Triste Yo’” but during the 1980s and 1990s, Taman moved between Saipan, Guam and briefly, Chuuk.
During these years he became fluent in Chuukese and Pohnpeian and began writings songs in many of the indigenous
languages of Micronesia.
The 1982 song “Jesus I King” was his first Chuukese language recording while “Kom Fin Son” was the first commercial
music recording in the Kosraen language. In 1992, he recorded “Menlau,” a Pohnpeian language song that became popular
throughout the Northern Marianas. In 1995, he recorded “Yigo Akasasa,” perhaps the first pan-Micronesian hit. The rhythm
which Taman composed for the song has become a staple of contemporary Micronesian music. Through five albums with
Tropicsette and Chamolinian and 21 solo albums, Taman has helped develop a sound that is uniquely Micronesian and his
music has influenced musicians from Belau to the Marshall Islands.
Since the early 1980s, Taman has worked in various capacities for the CNMI government, even serving a term in the 15th
CNMI Legislature. However, he remains best known as a cultural authority and for his efforts to perpetuate language and
culture through music. In 1995 his skill was recognized when he was appointed to the boards of the CNMI Council of Arts
and Crafts and the Chamorro/Carolinian Language Commission. That year, he also helped found the CNMI chapter of the
Pacific Islands Bilingual Bicultural Association and served as interim president.
Since moving to Guam in 2010, Taman has continued to share his gifts through dozens of voluntary performances at island
public schools during Mes Chamorro and as a judge in the University of Guam’s annual Chamorro Language Competition.
Taman is a living archive of traditional Micronesian music, using his talent to bring traditional sounds into the contemporary
cultures of the region.

The National Anthem
Lyrics by Francis Scott Key
Oh! Say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight,
O’re the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.
Oh!, Say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’re the land and of the free and the home of the brave?
The Guam Hymn
Ramon Manalisay Sablan, M.D. (1934)
Translated to Chamorro by Lagrimas Untalan
Fanoghe Chamorro put it tano’-ta
Kanta I matuna-na gi todu I lugat.
Para I honra, para I gloriha
Abiba I isla, sin parat.
Para I honra, para I gloriha
Abiba I isla, sin parat.
U todu I tiempo I pas para hita
Yan ginen I langet na bendesion.
Kontra I piligru, na’fansafu ham
Yu’os protehi I isla Guåhån.
Kontra I piligru, na’fansafu ham
Yu’os protehi I isla Guåhån.
University Alma Mater
Music by R. Mannoni
On the shore of the Western Pacific
Stands our Alma Mater true.
We’ll long retain the memories
Of the days we spent with you.
In the warmth of the island magic,
We will return some day.
Join in and sing a song of praise.
