Rainforest Essay
As economic hard times grow, Brazil’s Amazon rainforest continues to shrink. The land is
rich in natural resources and the land can be used for much economic benefit. Deforestation
can be hard to solve considering that once the forest is gone, there is no possible way to repair
it.
In debt for nature swap, the government is paid In order to preserve the rainforests, and
the animals living within. This will definitely be a positive, not only for the country, but for all of
the people fighting to save the forest. A Negative of debt for nature swap would be the fact
that all of the people and companies that want to cut the rainforest down, would be against the
government since they would be trying to preserve the forest.
Ecotourism, in my opinion, is the solution for any tourist problems that may occur in
Brazil. In ecotourism, hotels (more like tree houses), are built in the middle of the forest, and
many activities are provided for these guests that are eco friendly. Some of these activities, may
include nature walks, zip lining through the forest, or animal watches. Brazil is able to charge
large amounts of money, helping the economy, without even scraping the environment. But of
course with every good idea, there are obviously negative effects. One negative effect could
possibly be that the many zip lines running through the forest could be a hazard for the animals
living in the forest. Also, the tree houses that are built in the trees for ecotourism could
interfere with animals’ habitats and homes.
Another solution to the rainforest dilemma could perhaps be raising the taxes on
whoever, or whichever company wants to cut down the forest. This would discourage most
companies, such as lumbering companies, to try to cut down the forest for lumber. If however,
they do want to still go through with their plan, then the government would still receive large
amounts of money in return for a few acres of rainforest.
One effect of the rainforest dilemma is that people use the slash and burn method
creating land that cannot be used. In order to solve this economically wise, we could let the
loggers go in and take the resources that they may need, then allow those other people to burn
and use the land for ranching. This allows for both the loggers and the ranchers to get their own
way, helping them both economically.
In conclusion, the rainforest dilemma is a controversial subject with many reasons
backing both sides (preserve or develop). Everybody has their own opinion on this subject and
both have their reasons. There are pros and cons to both sides, and only time will tell which
way the Amazon will go.
