Students will examine how the author’s purpose
affects his/her use of language and choice of form
AGENDA:
1. Complete grammar warmup #40
(pronoun/antecedents). Turn in warmups 36-40.

Huck Finn: In your reading circle,
 read “The Meanings of a Word” by Gloria Naylor (refer to
webpage) silently.
 Then decide as a group whether you agree with the author
that words themselves are harmless, but the meaning
attached by certain groups to a particular word is what
gives these words their power. Justify your position.
 How would you characterize her tone? Provide examples.
 What connections can you make to Huck Finn with this
essay?
2. Discuss different examples of satire, using “A Liberating
Curriculum” by Roberta Borkat as an example (refer to
webpage) .
