Assignment #2.3: Reading and Analyzing “Saboteur”
For Monday, March 1st, please access and print Ha Jin’s short story “Saboteur” from the class
Resources page. Read the story and, as before, underline words or sentences that strike you as
important. Then, in the margin, try to examine why these sentences are important to you. After
you have finished reading, please compose a 2 page typed response to the following question:
What main theme do you see Ha Jin working with throughout the story? Try to name and
define this theme and refer to words or passages from the text to explain and examine your
reasoning.
This assignment is an opportunity to develop your understanding of the text by writing and to
practice referring to and analyzing quotations to examine your reasoning. As always, make sure
to explain in your own words: 1) what the quotation is showing or describing, and 2) why it is
important to you and/or how it relates to your idea or claim. Make sure that you quote the
words/passages within your analysis rather than listing it separately.
This response is due in class on Monday, March 1st.
