LAST TWO WEEKS: 22 & 29 October 2013
22 October
Meeting organised by Director Jim Johnston and the Youth & Vocational
Committee. Victoria University Professor Jim introduced the format for
the evening and our Guest Speakers.
Guest Speakers: Mrs. Gabrielle Gunn, Head of Science at
Samuel Marsden Collegiate School and the two Marsden Science
students we had sponsored who were chosen to represent RD 9940 at the
Rotary Science & Technology Forums: Sabrina Koh in Auckland and
Morgan Archer in Canberra.
Gabrielle Gunn, their teacher, provided the science
background and purpose of the Forums. Sabrina then described her
experience attending the Auckland Forum. There, the studies
covered geo science, food science, molecular biology, biomedical
science, microbiology and ‘glow-in-the-dark’ proteins. Plus, “lots

of sport” such as volleyball, and a new experience – “a look behind the
scenes” with an “Explore Auckland Day,” a formal dinner – and a “National
Sheet Day” (all hung out to dry in front of buildings!” Sabrina said it had
been “a valuable opportunity.”
Morgan then described the Forum in Canberra that she had
attended – “where there was also laughter and love” and travel – to
Pine Island, a space station, the State Parliament and a Yarralumba
Woolshed. Their lecture subjects included forensic chemistry,
Australia’s Institute of Sport and chemistry at ANU (including ice
cream!). Along with the hands-on science, the Canberra forum also
included sessions on science in communication and science in
industry, which Morgan found interesting. Overall, “it was a great
opportunity!”
In conclusion, Sabrina and Morgan ended their presentation with a
“Big Thank You” to Karori Rotary. Their respective experiences provided
them with a wider appreciation of possible career pathways which they
found valuable. Their comments were illustrated with some very good
overheads and their presentations gave us an informative overview of these
Forums.
Question time included asking if the Forums had given them
different ideas as to how to realize opportunities from their actual degrees.
Thanks: Jamie Milne.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Pres. Rowland reported on:
 Karori Residents & Business Association: a public meeting chaired by
Councillor Andy Foster at the Karori Park Sports complex the previous
evening (21 October) – to discuss Andy’s proposal. Most discussion
was on activities in which Karori Rotary is involved. Karori Rotarians
present with Rowland included Michael Fagg, Bob Murdoch, David
Sercombe and Wally Simmers (who spoke on the proposed new Karori
Event Centre). Karori Lions were also represented and all three
Wellington City Council ward members were there. (Some 90 residents
in all.)
Outcome: a strong representative group was formed, with an initial
meeting now set for February 2014. “It’s really important for Karori to
have a strong representation in the Wellington City Council – Karori is
the largest suburb,” says President Rowland.

Tuesday, 29 October (The pictures will tell the story…)
A very convivial, relaxing social evening organised by the Club Services
Committee in the pleasant surroundings of the Time Cinema in Lyall Bay.
A screening of a very interesting of a Rotary International film from
the early 1950s followed by an informal dinner after which everyone
enjoyed The Lavender Hill Mob – remember those black Wolsley Police
Cars! All this amidst the fascinating collection stacked to the gunnels with
early cinematic memorabilia – including a 1960 Karori News front page.
BUSHFIRE APPEAL – to help Australian Rotarians
In Wellington Central Rotary’s Bulletin, Dexter Bambery reports Rotary
New Zealand’s World Community Service (RNZWCS) has launched an
appeal to help those Rotarians and their families who have lost their homes
and their livelihoods through these horrific fires.
New Zealand Rotarians wanting to help are asked to send donations
to: RNZWCS Ltd. (to comply with IRD requirements). The Internet bank
account (Westpac) no. is: 03 1702 0192208 01 (be sure to add your Rotary
