Converting an improper
fraction into a mixed number
To convert an improper fraction into a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient will be the whole
part of the mixed number and the remainder will be the numerator of the fractional part. (The denominator of the fractional part
is the same as the denominator of the improper fraction.)
WORKED Example
Change
7
--5
into a mixed number.
THINK
WRITE
Divide 7 by 5. Five goes into seven once with a
remainder of 2. So the whole part of the mixed
number is 1 and the numerator of the fractional
part is 2. (The denominator remains unchanged.)
7
--5
= 1 2--5-
