Aston Telling Tales
Women & Theatre are really excited to be
starting their brand new project: Aston
Telling Tales, working in partnership with
Centre for the Aston Family, Aston Hall and
Birmingham Settlement.
We are looking for enthusiastic people from
around the Aston area who are interested in
getting involved in this new and exciting
project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the City Council.
We want to uncover interesting stories about the ordinary working folk who lived (and still
live) in Aston, those whose lives don’t appear in the history books. By researching both the
distant and more recent past we want to tell the ‘Tales of the un-chronicled’.
We want to tell the stories of those people in the 1600s who by their hard work kept Aston
Hall going – tending the grounds and gardens, cleaning, cooking and looking after the needs
of its wealthier inhabitants. Also those in the 1950’s – to the present day, who settled here,
working and living in the Aston area.
The stories will be both recorded - so they form part of a digital archive and performed
‘live’ at Aston Hall as part of a promenade theatre performance.
If you think this sounds up your street – come and get involved! We’ll be coming to meet
groups in and around Aston in January, or you can contact us directly on 0121 449 7117 /

About Women & Theatre
We develop productions and projects from in depth research, sharing stories with
communities in a respectful and participatory process. Our work focuses on communication
and the sharing of real life experiences. It provides an interactive forum through which to
identify with others, deepen understanding and facilitate change.
You may remember us from our project last year, at Centre for the Aston Family – Make, Do
& Mend.
