Course Description
This course is designed to allow students to receive transcripted credit for a college level course through
accordance with WCTC. As such, we must maintain the level of coursework received through the college. This
course focuses on the component parts of medical terms: prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. Students practice
formation, analysis and reconstruction of terms. Emphasis is on spelling, definition and pronunciation. An
introduction to all operative, diagnostic, therapeutic and symptomatic terminology of all body systems, as well as
systemic and surgical terminology is covered.

Late and missing work, projects, or assessments will not be tolerated. Progress cannot be accurately
monitored if work is not completed in a timely manner. Consequences will follow for late and/or
incomplete work, including communication home, and this will be reflected as missing in the grade book.
Grades may be entered for assignments that do not count toward their final grade for the purpose of
keeping track of student progress; these will be weighted as 0.
Because Medical Terminology is a course that relies heavily on appropriate and current use of the terms,
students will have assignments related to and graded based on these application and communication skills,
and will be graded accordingly.
Students at this level are expected to be self-reliant. This means that if a student is aware that they will be
missing class ahead of time, they need to prepare themselves accordingly by asking to get work early, taking
assessments that will be missed, etc. If a student misses a day that is unforeseen, he/she needs to make use
of resources such as Moodle, email (to the teacher or classmate) or ELO to get up to speed. Time between
and during classes is not appropriate to have these conversations.
Although at times personal devices will be helpful, students are not allowed to have these out as a
distraction during instructional time unless instructed, or they receive permission.
I have read and understood the information written above, and agree to maintain the standards expected of me in
Ms. Aston’s Medical Terminology class: (return this signed portion to Ms. Aston by Wednesday, September 3rd)
