Instructional Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
Summarize the differences and similarities between the continental drift hypothesis and
the plate tectonics theory.
Locate earthquakes on a map using longitude and latitude coordinates.
Identify the plates causing the earthquakes.

VI.
Instructional Processes:
A. Transition: Teacher “1-2-3 eyes on me” Students “1-2 eyes on you” Teacher “Please
clear your desks and all that you need is a pen or pencil and your thinking caps”
B. Introduction: Show National Geographic earthquake video
http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/player/environment/environment-naturaldisasters/earthquakes/earthquake-montage.html. Activate prior knowledge by
reviewing information that has been taught over the past two weeks.
C. Procedures:
1. Play podcast located on the zip drive.
2. Pass out worksheets.
3. Pull up http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/quakes_all.php
4. Have students record and locate the last ten earthquakes’ coordinates on their
worksheets.
5. By using the plate tectonic image on their worksheet, have students identify the
plates involved with the earthquakes.
6. Students will write a summary comparing and contrasting the continental drift
hypothesis and the plate tectonics theory.
D. Closure/Conclusion: Review material covered and vocabulary words introduced. Ask
if there are any questions.
VII.
Strategies for Individual Differences:
Modifications for diversity:
BD: Check with teacher after every question.
LD: Only required to complete information for five earthquakes.
Gifted: Allow time on computer to retrieve data about the size of the earthquakes and
different types of boundaries. Will write a brief summary on their findings.
