What is the project about?
Each year ARK undertakes a large survey
among 16-year olds in Northern Ireland – the
Young Life and Times (YLT) survey. ARK is
a project jointly run by the University of
Ulster and Queen’s University Belfast.
In 2010 and 2011, YLT asked questions on
sexual behaviour and sexual risks that young
people face (such as grooming by adults and
being put under pressure to have sex when
you don’t want to).
We are running a short anonymous
survey among Brook NI service users
and other young people who attend
sexual health clinics and services.
We will also run some group discussions.
We do this so that young people can tell us
in more details what they think about sexual
risks that young people face.
We do this to find out whether our YLT
survey picked up the right information
from young people.
We will also collect opinions from young
people on what educational resource and
campaign they think would work best.
Should it be a poster or a leaflet, a website,
a video or a smart phone app?!
What do YOU think would work best?
The 16-year olds told the YLT survey that
they felt there should be higher awareness
and better education resources about the
sexual risks that young people face.
Brook NI and ARK successfully applied for
some funding to develop such an education
resource and information campaign to help
young people understand and deal with
sexual risks that they may face. The project
runs from April to December 2013. We will
have a big celebration to launch the
resource.
However, we want young people to have a
say in what this resource and campaign
should be and how it should look like.
There are three ways in which you can get
involved and help us and other young
people who will benefit from this resource:
1. Survey
We will hold group discussions in Belfast
and in Coleraine. We will pay for your
journey and will make every effort to
make you feel comfortable. We will give
you a snack and a drink, and we have a
prize draw among everybody who takes
part.
Please pick up a copy of the
questionnaire and fill it in. It only takes 10
minutes to complete it, and will help us to
better understand the issues around
sexual risks.
The survey is completely anonymous,
and we don’t ask for your names or
addresses.
You can place your
completed
questionnaire in a sealed envelope the
box available in Brook or you can ask for
a stamp and post the questionnaire
directly to the researcher if you prefer.
2. Group discussions
3.
Peer Educator/Volunteer
If you are really interested in this project, you
could
become
one
of
our
peer
educators/volunteers.
You would then receive some training, and
you would help us to with the group
discussions and with the design of the
resource and information campaign. This
could provide you with some great
experience, with new friends and new skills.
If you would like to take part in the group
discussions or want to become a peer
educator on this project, please fill in
your details below and leave this form
with a Brook NI staff member.
