Course Syllabus
Welcome to Discussion & Debate! First, let’s dispel some of the myths about this class.
1. It DOES count as a speech requirement, but it’s NOT easier than speech
2. You DO have to stand up and speak in front of an audience in order to pass this class.
3. I DO expect a lot out of my students and WILL hold you accountable.
4. A number of students HAVE failed this class before.
5. You CAN get something out of this class, and you DON’T need to be a brain surgeon in order to do so.
What you need to know about me.
1. I’m fair, honest, and genuinely enjoy what I’m doing
2. I’m strict on projects…I enforce deadlines and have high expectations
3. I hardly give any homework in this class, but there is PROJECT WORK…which is very important!
4. I require that you respect the opinions and beliefs of others; you don’t have to like what people say, but you must
be respectful…you will have your chance.
5. My energy level in this class will be directly proportional to yours.
Marking Period Breakdown --- (subject to change)
1st Marking Period – based on a total of 500 points:
 Morals, Honor, and Family Values Discussion and Homework
o Discussion and Informal Debate
o 30 points – 6% of MP Grade
 ½ & ½ Debate
o Semi-Formal Debate
o 80 points – 16% of MP Grade
 1st Constructive Unit – Preparing for formal debate
o Manuscript (HW/CW), Formal Speech, Semi-Formal Debate
o Manuscript – 60 pts., Delivery of Speech – 40 pts., Cross-Examination – 20pts.
o 120 points total – 24% of MP Grade
 Short Story
o Informal Speech
o 20 points – 4%
 Team Debate
o Formal Debate
o 200 points – 40% of MP Grade
 It’s worth a lot but we devote a lot of class time to it and part of the grade is earned in the process
 Class Participation
o 50 points – 10% of MP Grade
 Other Assignments
o Maybe???
2nd Marking Period – based on a total of 500 points:
 In-Class Presentation
o 150 points – 30% of MP Grade
 2-on-2 Debate
o 150 points – 30% of MP Grade
 Informal Debates & Speeches
o 100 points – 20% of MP Grade
 Class Participation
o 50 points – 10% of MP Grade
 Other Assignments
o 50 points – 10% of MP Grade
