Welcome to SCCC Biology Laboratory Facilities
All Biology students prior to beginning your work in these facilities must review the following Safety Protocol.
NO OPEN TOED SHOES ALLOWED IN LAB AT ANY TIME, EVEN DURING OPEN LAB HOURS! If you are found
wearing open toed shoes in lab you WILL be asked to leave and there will be no re-entry until you have closed
toed shoes on!! This is your first and final warning!
FOOD AND DRINK IS PROHIBITED IN ALL LABORATORY FACILITIES. If food or drink is left out on lab benches,
the student will be required to leave lab for the remainder of that lab period. This is your first and final warning!
AUDIO HEADPHONES AND CELL PHONES ARE PROHIBITED IN LABORATORY FACILITIES. THIS APPLIES TO
REGULAR LAB TIMES AND OPEN LAB TIMES.
Only students currently enrolled in Biology classes are allowed access to laboratory facilities. This applies to lab
periods AND open-lab times.
During open lab times: All the same safety rules must be obeyed otherwise you may lose your open lab privileges.
It is available for REVIEW of lab sessions ONLY. Labs may be repeated ONLY with Instructor approval. The tutor
has complete control to enforce the rules and regulations of the laboratory facilities
Lab materials are not to be removed from the laboratory facility. All slides, chemical reagents, protective
equipment or any other SCCC lab property must remain in the laboratory facility. Removal of any of these
constitutes theft.
Locate the Fire Extinguisher, First-aid Kit, Fire Blanket, Safety Shower and Eye Bath in the laboratory facility.
REPORT ALL ACCIDENTS (e.g. cuts, spills or equipment damage) to your Lab Instructor or a Biology Lab
Technician.
Please notify your Lab Instructor or Biology Lab Technician of any chemical spill. IMMEDIATELY!! Chemical spill
response kits (Acid/Caustic/Solvent) are located in the Biology Prep Room.
Please notify your Lab Instructor or Biology Lab Technician of any broken lab equipment. IMMEDIATELY!! Deposit
all broken glassware in Broken Glass Disposal Box.
When working with biohazard materials, (e.g. cheek cells and bacteria), discard all swabs, slides and plates in
appropriate Biohazard Container.
Proper Discard of “Wet Mount” Slides
1. Your prepared “wet mount” slide is ready to be discarded.
2. Remove the cover slip from the slide.
3. Place ONLY the slide into the slide bowl located on the back counter next to the sink.
4. Place the cover slip into the trash can.
NEVER DISCARD PROFESSIONALLY PREPARED SLIDES
Proper Clean-Up of Dissection Materials
1. Biohazard bins are provided by the lab staff.
2. Place any unused or bits of the preserved specimens into the biohazard bins.
3. Rinse the dissection tools and place them on a cart to dry.
4. Rinse the dissecting trays with soap and water located by the sink.
5. Place the clean tray on a cart upside down to dry.
Students should wash their hands upon arriving and leaving the laboratory facility.
Please don’t discard solid materials (e.g. paper towels, lens paper or preserved materials) in the lab sinks. Use
proper disposal method for these materials as described by your Lab Instructor.
Please wash tables with the Lysol solution provided before starting lab and at the end of lab.
Tie back long hair and refrain from wearing loose fitting clothing in laboratories and while using Bunsen burners
Always unplug Hot Plates when finished with lab procedure. If they are still hot please place a sign indicating
what time they were unplugged.
When working with preserved materials you must wear gloves at all times and keep your hands away from your
face.
Protective eyewear must be worn when directed to do so by laboratory instructor.
No sitting or lying down on the Laboratory tables.
MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for all chemical reagents are located in the Biology Prep Room.
Please make use of the paper recycling containers in the lab, but don’t put any paper towels or other garbage in
them.
