Ballyheada Green-Schools Programme in action!
Paper
Notes / Letters to Parents
Notes are given to the eldest child in
each family. We try to include as
many messages on each sheet of
paper as possible. We text-a-parent
with messages, where possible.
Noticeboards are used to circulate
staff information.
Worksheets
We use double sided photocopying
whenever possible.
Scrap paper
These are kept in each classroom
and used for drawing, cutting
activities, etc.
Very small scraps of paper are used
in our wormery to make compost.
Junk mail and leaflets
These are shredded and used as
bedding for horses.
Books / Novels
Some books and novels are bought
by the school and rented / loaned to
pupils to cut down on money costs for
parents.
Plastic
Plastic bags
All pupils bring their lunch in a lunch
box. Sandwich bags and tin foil are
not encouraged.
Packaging
Many items are bought in bulk to
minimise
packaging
waste
(stationery,
toiletries,
cleaning
products, A4 paper, etc.)
Tubs and jars
We reuse empty butter tubs, sweet
jars and biscuit tins for storage and
empty chocolate tins are used to
collect pencil parings for wormery in
each room.

We reuse glass jars for art / water
containers and for storage to hold
paint brushes, etc.
A compost bin in the staff room is
used to collect all banana skins, apple
cores, orange peels, tea bags, etc. for
the wormery.
This compost will be used to grow
plants and vegetables in our school
garden.
A compost bin is located in all
classrooms for pencil parings,
tissues, small scraps of paper.
Each day members of the Green
Team collect paper scraps from all
rooms for the wormery.
Art and Craft materials
We collect waste items such as
cereal boxes, newspapers, tubs,
kitchen rolls, etc. for Art and Craft
activities.
Shoe boxes
Shoe boxes are reused for our annual
‘Team
