Position Title:
Director of Technology and Scientific Affairs
Cherney Microbiological Services, Ltd. is an ISO 17025 and ISO 17043 accredited food testing
laboratory and proficiency program provider that provides partnerships for companies by
mitigating risk through proactive testing approaches, continual improvement and a daily focus on
quality.
Summary: Under the direction of the President, the Director of Technology and Scientific Affairs is
responsible for technical aspects of operations, both microbiological and chemical, projects and
studies, internal verifications and external customer requests. They will also have the highest
degree of authority regarding technical issues. This position will have supervisory responsibilities
of Customer Service Specialists and Cherney College trainers and ensure that we meet/exceed
customer expectations for timely delivery of quality product utilizing good general business
practices that are in full compliance with any state or federal requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties as assigned):



















Proactively and reactively leads the company through technology
Ensures customers technical requirements are being communicated and met in a timely
manner
Direct involvement with customers, advising and consulting as necessary. May frequently
require on-site visits and travel.
Acts as the primary technical resource both internally and externally
Technical ownership of validity of lab methods and procedures– oversees unique technical
issues that arise
Develop and deliver proposals, progress reports, required documentation, presentations,
coordinate invoicing requirements and payment status
Define project scope, goals and deliverables with a balance between research and “big
picture” business strategy
Ability to execute projects, steps, activities directly or through others
Strong, recognized project management skill
A member of the senior management team
Strong Leadership and/or participation in core teams to drive key strategic priorities
Demonstrated leadership ability and ability to lead cross-functional teams
Act as a technical mentor for team members
Ability to use positive techniques to motivate staff
Evaluation of new testing technologies and method development related to the food
industry

Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily.
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
1. Requires a BS in Microbiology or Food Science and 10-15 years’ experience in related roles with
management experience. Food manufacturing experience required.
2. High energy, positive, motivated, with commitment and willingness to openly collaborate across
multifunctional teams and external partners
3. Demonstrated laboratory skills and techniques
4. Prior food testing experience across multiple matrices
5. Demonstrated expertise in leadership development for strengthening team
6. Strong track record of result-producing activities
7. Ability to professionally hold team members accountable for achieving objectives
8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills and attentive and timely in
responses
9. Multi-tasking skillset, ability to prioritize, lead and effectively manage others is required
10. Collaborative and cooperative work style internally and externally with a “can do” attitude
11. Excellent problem solver who sees solutions instead of obstacles
12. Familiarity with LIMS,MS Office software and strong computer skills
13. Valid driver’s license
14. Excellent attendance record
Physical Requirements:
1. Able to walk regularly around the production floor and office areas, including climbing steps and
also occasionally climbing on a ladder
2. Able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted
3. Able to bend, squat, sit and stand
4. Able to sit in office chair working on written assignments and operate a computer
5. Occasionally works near fumes or airborne particles, and near caustic or toxic chemicals
6. Special vision requirements of this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
