DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
Description and Guidelines
S-TEAM Work Package 6
The objective of WP6 is to incorporate state-of-the-art knowledge about inquiry-based methods
in science into effective professional development programmes for teachers, with a broader aim
to improve attitudes, motivation and career choice disposition towards science for pupils in the
partner countries and elsewhere.
During the second year of the project, each partner will develop and implement a professional
development program (training module) related to a specific area of science education. The
development of the training package will be based on data collection from the local education
system that would help and guide the development of the training package for each
country/partner participating in WP6. The partners’ plans for collection and subsequent analysis
of these data have been described in the methodology report submitted in November 2009 by
each partner. The two short reports outlined below will describe the outcomes of this process.
DATA COLLECTION REPORT
The data collection report will describe the different data collected, as outlined in the partners’
methodology report, on which the training package is designed. This data will address the
various aspects relative to professional development and scientific inquiry each partner has
chosen to focus upon. The data collection report may include the following points though
partners may elaborate on any additional features which help describe their project fully:
 A description of the data source(s)
o From where was the data collected, (description of the environment and
participants, number of classes researched from which the data was used etc)
o When and over what time period was the data collected
 The form the data took, so that this might be useful to the purpose of your study (e.g.
questionnaires, videos, interview transcripts etc)
o How does the data collected reflect and answer the research questions/needs, you
have previously identified in the methodology report?
 How does the data from each data source shape the design of the professional
development program (training module)?
 Report on any deviation from the initial data collection plan (if any) as outlined in the
methodology report.
Submission deadline to the WP6 leader: April 30th, 2010
DATA ANALYSIS REPORT
The data analysis report will describe the results/findings derived from the analysis (as described
in the methodology report) of the data collected (as described in the data collection report) and
elaborate on the ways that this information can be useful in the design of the specific
professional development program (training package). Partners should describe fully the
methods implemented in analysing the data (e.g. qualitative, discourse analysis, pre-post

comparisons, video analysis) and present the findings which are used in the design of the training
package.
 Present and explain the findings of the data analysis
 Describe the ways the results/findings will be used for the development of the
professional development program (training package)
Submission deadline to the WP6 leader: May 21st, 2010
As a guide to the length of the documents to be prepared, we anticipate that each document will
comprise of minimum 1,500 words
