Job Purpose:
To design better places for walking and cycling through community led street
design projects in Bristol and the South West. This will involve designing
walking and cycling routes, urban realm improvements and temporary
infrastructure and delivering community engagement and events
Dimensions of job:
The post holder will develop a wide portfolio of street design schemes some
of which including a thorough public engagement process, supporting local
communities to ‘reclaim’ urban space, giving them greater control over their
immediate environment, and supporting them to work together to improve
quality of life for everyone living in or visiting the project areas.
The post holder will also be involved in the delivery of cycling schemes,
providing designs and graphics for other projects as required, as part of the
South West infrastructure team.
Place in the Organisation:
The post holder will report to the Regional Infrastructure Manager.

Key Responsibilities (not in ranking order):
1. To prepare designs and to provide high quality, imaginative and
technically-competent design solutions that encourage walking and cycling
2. To provide design expertise and advice to the South West team
programme, including creating and presenting appropriate sketches and
drawings
3. To contribute with innovative ideas to traditional cycle and walking
schemes
4. To develop appropriate design materials, including plans, technical
drawings and 3D visuals;
5. To design and deliver participative design processes with local people,
engaging communities as widely as possible
6. To design and deliver creative and eye-catching community engagement
activities and events, such as consultation events, street parties, etc.
7. To deliver the temporary trialling of proposed interventions, including event
management and overseeing installation
8. To foster, promote and develop successful relationships with residents and
other community stakeholders, including recruiting and training local
champions
9. To contribute to the development of project proposals and bids
10. To ensure effective local partnerships are developed and maintained in
order to support wider project objectives.
11. To participate in project meetings with partners and other stakeholders
12. To provide project management including scheduling and budget
management
13. To liaise with RMU team and support the monitoring, evaluation and
reporting of the outcomes and outputs of projects;
14. To promote projects on social media and work with the Sustrans press
and publicity team to support the generation of positive media based
upon Sustrans project work
15. To provide support for other related projects/staff if appropriate and
required as part of the South West infrastructure team
16. To support and comply with the organisation’s Policy for the management
of Health and Safety;
17. To work in accordance with the arrangements described in the
organisation’s health and safety management system including any project
or department specific requirements
18. To undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade, the post and
capabilities of the post holder as directed by the line manager.
Working Conditions:
The post will be based in Bristol with regular trips to project sites across
the South West and potentially occasional project work across England.
There will also be some travel required, including visits to other Sustrans
regional teams, with some overnights away from home. Due to the nature of
the role some work outside normal office hours will be required.

Person Specification
Criteria
Essential
Qualifications,
education and
training
Educated to degree level or a relevant qualification in
Urban Design, Landscape architecture or related field
and/or
an
alternative,
relevant
and
demonstrable
specialism (e.g. collaborative design)
Experience
Experience of working on design projects with a significant
level of community engagement or involvement.
Demonstrable experience in workshop facilitation.
Project management experience, working on multiple
projects.
Experience of working in partnership with a local authority
on project delivery.
Skills and
abilities
Ability to be proactive, to work independently and on own
initiative
Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, specifically
with relation to members of the community / general
public.
An ability to develop productive working relationships with
partner organisations.
Visual presentation skills (free-hand drawing and/or
relevant experience with computer design packages e.g.
Photoshop, Sketch Up, Illustrator, In Design)
Excellent written, verbal communication and presentation
skills.
An ability to be organised and efficient, able to function
on own initiative with limited supervision.
Strong administrative skills.
Knowledge
Knowledge of current best practice in street design.
Computer literate (knowledge of word-processing,
databases, spreadsheets packages, internet and website
usage)
An understanding of local travel issues.
A dynamic and creative approach.
