Text of joint proclamation for
All Calhoun County Cultures and Cuisines
Parade of Ancestors
On Main Street, Port Lavaca Texas
3rd Saturdays of March
signed Feb 20,2012
in Commissioners Couirt Room of Calhoun County Texas by
Calhoun County Judge Michael Pfeifer and
Port Lavaca Mayor Jack Whitlow
Whereas
In different years over the centuries, something of especial
significance to one or more of Calhoun County’s ancestral cultures,
occurred on or a few days before March 21, fixed by the Ecclesiastic
calendar as the date of the Spring Equinox, from which Passover and
Easter are calculated, such as:
Death of St. Patrick (3/17/460)
Birth of John C. Calhoun (3/18/1782)
Birth of Pierre Talon (3/20/1677) in Canada, 1 of the children
who came from France with LaSalle, who before living with the
Karankawa here, the Spanish Viceroy in Mexico, other peoples in Asia
Europe & Africa, did witness on the day before his 11th birthday, the
Death of LaSalle (3/19/1687)
Approval of Texas constitution (3/18/1836)
Birth of Benito Juarez ( 3/21/1806)
Hungarian poets’ victory during German revolution (3/15/1848
Philippines meet Magellan (3/16/1521)
Czechoslovakian holocaust by Nazi (3/15/1939
Liu Bei becomes Han Emperor (3/15/221)
Sima Yan founds Jin dynasty (3/15/280). And
Whereas, Calhoun County more harmoniously encompasses heavy
manufacturing and chemical industries, agriculture of corn, cotton,
soybeans, catfish, crawfish, shrimp, cattle, and horses, commercial
oystering and shrimping, recreational hunting, fishing, sailing, kayaking,
birdwatching and sunning, more miles of shoreline, languages spoken
and ancestral cultures than any known rural coastal county with so
small a population in Texas, the USofA, and probably the world. And
Whereas the time of year when the air is cool and balmy and smells of
Texas Mountain Laurel, Spanish bayonets, and Mesquite, as they finish
blooming, and the whooping cranes and sand hill cranes are joined by
winter Texans heading back to Canada and Minnesota and Texas
families on spring break heading to and from the beach driving on I 59
and 35, is a splendid time to enjoy each other’s cultures, cuisines,
parade as our favorite, or adopted favorite, ancestor, and welcome
visitors from far and near. And
Whereas, we are more likely to remember, and our grandchildren as
well as strangers passing through, are more likely to mark their
calendars to return and tell others, if the time and place of an All
Calhoun County Cultures and Cuisines Parade of Ancestors on Main
Street in Port Lavaca, is fixed and easy to recall.
And sinceThe Trust for Historic Preservation
((www.preservationation.org) and other Non Governmental
Organizations (NGOs) such as the Texas Downtown Association
(WWW.texasdowntown.org) and the Kellogg Foundation(www.wkkf.org)
are reporting findings that prioritizing support for authentic historic
and cultural events to create “vibrancy” on the old main streets of
small towns delivers more sustainable economic growth and
repopulation to rural America than other approaches, particularly when
money is short. And
Whereas organizations and groups can sell tickets and promote
traditional and new upcoming events, recruiting more local participation
and attendance from out of town by mutually supporting each other at
an All Calhoun County Cultures and Cuisines Parade of Ancestors on
Port Lavaca Main St to be held every spring on the predictable easy to
remember (think of your favorite upcoming event -- P. L. Main St
theatre’s Velvet Rabbit, Country Opry, Cinco de Mayo, Sea Drift’s
Great Texas Water Safari and Shrimp Fest, Port O Connor’s Warrior’s
Weekend , the County Fair, linking sites along The Camino Real and
Chihauhau Trails, Steak night at the VFW, Rotary, Lions etc))
Therefore, be it hereby proclaimed by the Commissioner’s Court of
Calhoun County (the City Council of Port Lavaca) that
on the 3rd Saturday of March,, 2012 and every 3rd Saturday in March
there after,
in the City of Port Lavaca, Texas, on Main Street between Virginia
Street and Commerce Street,
the All Calhoun County Cultures and Cuisines Parade of Ancestors shall
take place.
